Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

The Winter's Tale by William Shakespeare, Directed by Nicholas Martin-Smith

Written late in William Shakespeare’s career, The Winter’s Tale (1609-1611) is a story of jealousy, loss, and redemption. Leontes, the King of Sicily, believes his pregnant wife is carrying his best friend’s love child. Leontes’s jealousy turns to tyranny as the king proceeds to destroy his entire family and a lifelong friendship. Sixteen long years pass, and we witness one of the most astonishing endings in English literature. (summary via Shmoop dot com)

Moses Sumney is a new LA-based singer & songwriter. Growing up, he was so shy that he would write songs avidly but hide them inside his mattress. At 20, he moved out of his parents' house to study creative writing at UCLA and finally gathered the courage to start performing music. After purchasing a beat-up guitar from a friend, he taught himself to play and accompany himself. He grew quickly as an artist at UCLA, soon performing weekly alongside the university's most esteemed musicians. Now graduated, he creates soul-infused folk tunes using guitar and layered arrangements built on loop pedals. Recently, SPIN Magazine described him as a "soul-folk warrior," Okayplayer called him "a name you should be hearing plenty of," and Pigeons & Planes called his voice a "breathing instrument that suggests a depth of feeling lyrics can only partially express."All of this, and he hasn't even officially released any music yet.

Sean Nicholas Savage is a Canadian Singer and Ballad Composer. In 2013 he released the record Other Life, his most emotionally thematic work and first in a year since he prolifically delivered three full length cassette albums; Flamingo, Won Ton Jaz and Trippple Midnight Karma in 2011. Savage touches always on a theory or profound observation and comes to at least a suggested point in his pop, drama compositions. Perhaps the pinnacle attraction of his work are these observations, learned wisdoms, the ongoing adventures shaping Savage himself, the Artist, the Performer, the Narrator. A pop ‘character’, but with severe realness comparable to Punk/Pop greats, such as Sinead O’Connor, Boy George or fellow Canadian poetics Majical Cloudz and Mac DeMarco. However, with the way music is consumed today, comparisons of contemporaries fail to do any contemporary justice. A broad range of genres and movements; Jazz, Punk, Country and Bossa that must all leave a stain on an artist that is himself an art admirer. Once a staple spectacle performance in Montreal’s all night illegal party scene, Savage has since taken to consistent touring and producing wherever he may be, in the past two years. In the spring of 2014 he is set to release Bermuda Waterfall, the much anticipated masterpiece follow up to his opus; Other Life.

The New York Neo-Futurists are an ensemble of dynamic writer/director/performers who are best known for their critically acclaimed, energetic signature show of original short plays, Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind. Once called "The Snapchat of Theater", with its ever-changing "menu" of plays, TML is a race against the clock to perform 30 plays in 60 minutes in an order determined by the audience! All our plays are presented from a perspective of absolute honesty, do not ask the audience to "suspend their disbelief", and often include audience interactions. A non-illusory collage of the comic and tragic, the political and personal, the visceral and experimental, Too Much Light endeavors to tell dynamic stories while embracing chance, change, and chaos. Developed out of a format that has been a success in Chicago since 1988, the Neo-Futurists put down roots in NYC in the mid 90’s and have been growing strong ever since. After a grand re-birth in the city in 2004, NYNF has created over 3300 new plays for Too Much Light, as well as many longer form works, and continues to present award-winning, topical and vital work every weekend at the Kraine Theater and around the New York independent theater community. Sometimes true life really is stranger than fiction...

SummerStage Kids presented by Disney presents Harlem Family Day, a day dedicated to engaging young audiences and their families through thrilling performances! Families will also have the opportunity to participate in interactive music & dance workshops + face painting and more!

Shine and The Moonbeams is family music's first Soul band. They bring a fresh soulful perspective to the world that belongs to families all across the planet. Take two outstanding NYC musicians with eclectic musical tastes and influences, combine their unique perspectives, add a backing band, and witness the result: a soulful, groove-heavy R&B musical extravaganza in a Rock and Roll package, capturing the sweetness, uncertainty, and simplicity of youth.

MOONA LUNA is the kindie group that the New York Daily News says is providing “the missing soundtrack for bilingual/bicultural kids.” After making a splash on the family music scene with their accordion-driven, Latin-inspired debut album, Piñata Party (2011), Moona Luna delivered something fresh in its sophomore album, Vamos, Let's Go! (2013). Songwriter and bandleader, Sandra Velasquez, found inspiration in American pop hits of the 50’s and 60’s, and staying true to her bilingual mission, crafted Spanish and English lyrics for each song. Having bilingual lyrics is just the icing on the cake because the tunes are so finger - snapping good and cater to extremely wide audiences.

Ten year old Kojo Odu Roney loved the drums even as a baby. His father is jazz saxophonist Antoine Roney; his mother Nia Love, an established choreographer and dancer; and his uncle trumpeter Wallace Roney; Kojo sat down to his first drum set at the age of two and has never looked back. At such a young age Kojo understood how to play the drum set in jazz setting. By 4 years old, he was able to play with jazz ensembles confidently. Practicing daily helped Kojo match his understanding of rhythm and applying it to the drum set. By the age of 8 years old, he went on his first tour in Europe, which is the start of his professional music encounters. His travels included France, Italy, Switzerland and Greece. He also visited other countries including Serbia, Germany, Austria and Poland. Kojo shares the stage and performs with many professional musicians including Buster Williams, Darrell Green, Billy Spaceman Paterson, Rashaan Carter, Brandee Younger, Saadi Zain, Emanuel Ruffler and of course his father, mother and uncle. Some great highlights of Kojo's many experiences is having the chance to sit in with The Incredible Lenny White, The Great Al Foster and legendary Jazz drummer, Roy Haynes, while great jazz drummers Louis Hayes and Grady Tate were in the audience and also having the chance to becoming friends with The Great Jimmy Cobb. Kojo currently performs with his dad and uncle.

On one August evening in the 1970's New York gave birth to a sound that would change the face of Latin music forever. At the renown Cheetah Nightclub, there was an ensemble of artists got together for what became a magical evening of music. The show was billed as "Our Latin Thing". In the decades ahead those all-star musicians would become the ambassadors and juggernauts of Latin Music around the world. They became the musical reflection of the times, needs, and struggles of New York's Latino community. Their music was "Salsa Gorda," influenced by American Jazz, Soul, and Rock and Roll. Their music became part of Americana. Currently billed as "Our Latin Thing", the group performs as an assortment of this music's top hits. This Musical/Theatrical like revue, will take the audience on a musical poetic journey. Re-Live the music, re-live the times, re-live the magic....This is "Our Latin Thing."

This Academy Award-winning documentary is the untold true story of the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century. Triumphant and heartbreaking in equal measure, the film is both a tribute to the unsung voices who brought shape and style to popular music and a reflection on the conflicts, sacrifices and rewards of a career spent harmonizing with others. Twenty Feet from Stardom juxtaposes interviews with industry legends (Bruce Springsteen, Bette Midler, and others) and the relative unknowns who support them like Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, and Judith Hill as they illuminate the art of melding their own distinct voices with lead vocals and reveal their desires for careers as solo artists. Directed by Morgan Neville.

Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is to focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass. Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre's Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.
