Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

Park Portraits by Alan Gastelum and Sonia Louise Davis is an exhibition of photographs featuring community members and park stewards. Since 2012, Alan Gastelum has been photographing East River Park, and this exhibition is the culmination of his multi-year commitment to the park. His portraits of East River Park stewards, including the artist Diana Carulli (who paintedthe labyrinth in the Dance Oval), Dan Tainow of the Lower East Side Ecology Center, Carlina Rivera from GOLES, Shaheeda Smith from Grand Street Settlement, are a beautiful testament to their love for and commitment to East River Park.

Sonia Louise Davis is one of five commissioned artists in 2014 who, in collaboration with the project partners, advisory committee, volunteers and most importantly, local feedback and support, is transforming Pier 42 into a vibrant and accessible waterfront park for the community.

Davis' The People’s Poster Project refines the notion of a time capsule. Instead of burying something in the ground to be excavated thousands of years in the future, the project aims to activate a more reflective space that highlights individual stories of Lower East Side residents within public dialogue about the future of Pier 42. The project consists of workshops and conversations about what matters most to Lower East Side community members.

Taxonomy is a collection of George Boorujy’s dynamic large-scale paintings of North American animals with disarmingly human characteristics, as well as a series of his preliminary clay models and drawings. Inhabitants of New York City and other urban centers often think of themselves as removed from nature, but Boorujy’s hyperrealistic ink-on-paper portraits force us to rethink our relationship with animals and our own place within the environment.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels. Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

The Bronx Latin AMerican Art Biennial presents the exhibition Open For Discussion. Art by Eduardo Terranova, Marylin Caminero, Pablo Caviede, Yarisa Colon, Josue Guarionex, Elizabeth Moreno, Delilah Montoya, Justo Carreras, Alejandro Epifanio, Jose Ortiz, Yehimar Abyssys, Carolina Bermudez, Melissa Calderon, Wanda Cotorreal, Martita Ibanez, Jonas Hidalgo.

The exhibition suggests that art discussion is inherently an expression of populism and protest; therefore it is important not to deny the mass attraction to it, but to recognize its communicative power.

In the 1990s a number of visual artists (including Kara Walker, Glenn Ligon, and Ellen Driscoll) created art that used literary slave narratives as templates for their work. Slave narratives of the 19th century told the story of enslavement and escape from the perspective of those who had been enslaved themselves. Often the contemporary artists place themselves or viewers in the position of the ex-slave narrator. This lecture brings together contemporary "visual slave narratives" and classic slave narratives from the 19th century to examine the way black artists and writers respond to institutional constraints placed on their cultural production. Slave narratives, called a "black message in a white envelope" by one critic, were constrained by the goals and directives of white editors. However, ex-slave narrators found creative ways to circumvent this narrative containment. This lecture examines the "fugitive" meanings within slave narratives -- that which remain uncontained or challenge editorial constraints.

Open Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, 2:30 – 4:30 pm. Through May 31, 2015.
