And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

Rockaway!, a free public arts festival sponsored by the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) to celebrate the reopening of Fort Tilden and recognize the ongoing recovery of the Rockaway peninsula, opens June 29 and continues through September 1, 2014. Invited by the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA), an association of artists based in and around the Rockaways, and the JBRPC, MoMA PS1 has assisted and supported the conception of this festival.

One component of the festival is a group exhibition organized in collaboration with the Honolulu Biennial on the grounds of the newly restored Rockaway Beach Surf Club on Beach 87th Street in Rockaway Beach. Following Hurricane Sandy, the Surf Club was the one of the largest relief centers on the peninsula; their organization facilitated and directed over 5,000 volunteers, with major contributions from MoMA PS1. The exhibition celebrates the efforts of the Rockaway community of surfers and artists in rebuilding their neighborhood.

Programs are held outdoors in good weather; in inclement weather we will meet in Wave Hill House. Every seed holds a promise of new growth. Join us this week for stories, movement and song as you send out roots, stretch out leaves, and hear all about how seeds grow. Our books this week are Big Yellow Sunflower by Frances Barry, The Empty Pot by Demi, The Curious Garden by Peter Brown, and My Garden by Kevin Henkes. 2014 marks Hudson River Park’s RiverRocks 16th Season. RiverRocks is among New York City’s quintessential free outdoor summer concert series and features established and breaking artists performing at the beautiful Pier 84.

Wild Beasts Friends since teenagers, the group created intense electronic sounds inspired by the 80s and 90s, retooled with an eye for the 21st century. The recent album, Present Tense, was released to much acclaim.

Mutual Benefit Jordan Lee leads the amorphous project that is at once a one-man-band or a sprawling collective, depending on where he is and who is around that day - resulting in lush, watery, pop songs filled with kinetic energy.

Historian Thomas Campanella will explore the forgotten "back story” to the 1939 New York World’s Fair, which began with US Congressman Sol Bloom’s effort to create a great permanent exposition in Brooklyn’s Marine Park to celebrate the bicentennial of George Washington.

Bloom's proposal for a 1932 Washington Bicentennial Exposition would be the grandest fair ever staged, with pavilions for 46 nations, a football stadium for 200,000 spectators and a centerpiece "taller and greater than either the Woolworth Building or the Eiffel Tower.”

Despite the backing of the city and Brooklyn civic organizations, Chicago stripped ahead of New York to stage a fair of its own in 1933. Several years later Robert Moses saw a World’s Fair as a means of funding his dream of turning the Flushing ash dumps into a great park. But Sol Bloom had influence yet, making sure his beloved General was a major presence at the 1939 New York World’s Fair—towering over the Central Mall in a 65-foot statue by James E. Fraser.

Hudson Warehouse presents The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, Directed by Nicholas Martin-Smith

A farcical comedy in which the protagonists maintain fictitious personæ in order to escape burdensome social obligations. Working within the social conventions of late Victorian London, the play's major themes are the triviality with which it treats institutions as serious as marriage, and the resulting satire of Victorian ways.

The mission of Hudson Warehouse is to present the classics in exciting productions inspired by our past and relevant to our present day. We want to educate the novice and enthrall the well-versed. We embrace the traditional and innovative, the classical and the modern classic. Through the dedication, passion and intelligence of all our theater artists, we bring these works to life. When our work elicits a true emotional response from an audience member, this experience reaffirms that theatre is a "ware" that is essential to daily life.

Domingo Quiñones is a salsa singer, composer, producer and actor. Born on August 9, 1963 in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, Quiñones moved to Puerto Rico with his parents when he was four years old, later returning to New York City in 1977. He began his career there six years later with the Conjunto Nativo. He also performed with other groups, including the orchestra of Rafael de Jesús, with José Alberto “El Canario”, with Johnny Rodriguez and the Conjunto Clásico. In 1985 he replaced Roberto Lugo in the orchestra of Luis “Perico” Ortiz with whom he recorded four albums, including La vida en broma (1985), In Tradition (1986) and Perico (1987). He then sang for a time with Louie Ramirez and Roberto Roena. In 1990, he signed as a solo artist with RMM and released his first solo album: Domingo es mi nombre. After joining Tito Puente on his 100th record, Quiñones released his second solo album Pintando Lunas. That album included a duet entitled “Dos Amigos” with Tony Vega and a salsa version of the song “Crazy for You” which proved his great versatility. This was followed by six additional recordings with RMM, including one of his most important productions: “Se necesita un milagro”, selected as one of the most influential albums by the National Foundation for Popular Culture of Puerto Rico. Among his many popular songs was “Mi Negrita Me Espera”.

For details and times of the rest of the exhibit, please visit the Rockaway! website.
