The photography exhibition New York City of Trees by Benjamin Swett is on view in the Arsenal Gallery from March 6 through April 26 (Arbor Day and Frederick Law Olmsted’s birthday). Twenty-eight color portraits of trees around the five boroughs take the viewer up close to some of the extraordinary species that grow along the streets and in the parks, cemeteries, gardens, and backyards of the city. On view in the Arsenal Gallery from March 6 through April 26 (Arbor Day and Frederick Law Olmsted’s birthday), the images have been selected from Swett’s forthcoming book New York City of Trees, to be released by the Quantuck Lane Press on March 6.

After working at Parks for thirteen years, Swett left in 2001 to pursue a career as a freelance photographer but continued to photograph New York City’s urban forest, fascinated by the connections between trees and the city’s history. “We know that trees improve living conditions in cities by filtering and cooling the air, absorbing excess rainwater, and making neighborhoods more attractive,” writes Swett. “But little has been said about the importance of trees as keepers of a city’s past. The aim in taking these pictures—aside from taking the best photographs I could—was to try to bring back into focus an aspect of the city that most people tend to take for granted until something happens to it. The idea has been to remind New Yorkers how much of their own lives and the lives of neighbors these trees quietly contain.”

This project was partially funded through a grant from Furthermore: a program of the J.M. Kaplan Fund, with additional support from the City Parks Foundation.

Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre.

Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is too focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass.

Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre’s Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.

Understanding the social and economic causes of the riots as well as the effects of the riots on subsequent New York history helps us appreciate that even in the North, support for the Union cause was not unanimous but a bitterly contested issue. The riots illustrate that the nation’s conflicts over race and labor were not on sectional grounds alone. This lecture will also discuss the draft riots that took place in Jamaica, NY on July 14, 1863.

Join us for a presentation by the author and NYC tree expert Edward Barnard, Stopping by Old Friends: My Favorite Trees in Central Park.

Frederick Law Olmsted took the long view. He once described a landscape architect as an artist who “with far-reaching conception of beauty and designing power, sketches the outlines, writes the colors, and directs the shadows, of a picture so great that Nature shall be employed upon it for generations, before the work he has arranged for her shall realize his intentions!” In his illustrated presentation, Edward Barnard, author of New York City Trees, A Field Guide to the Metropolitan Area, takes us on a walk through Olmsted’s greatest “picture” over 150 years after he and Vaux sketched the outlines, using trees, water, and rock outcroppings to define a remarkable series of discrete landscapes. Most of the trees Olmsted’s gardeners planted are gone, but a few still stand. During his presentation Barnard will highlight these survivors and also visit several dozen more recent arrivals—all trees that he considers among the greatest sylvan treasures of Central Park, trees that after many generation have realized Olmsted’s “far reaching conception.”

This event is part of a series of spring lecture series events hosted by MillionTreesNYC in partnership with photographer Benjamin Swett. Benjamin Swett’s new book, New York City of Trees, is being published in spring 2013. This event is partially funded through a grant from Furthermore: a program of the J.M. Kaplan Fund.

Two-member teams must run together at all times and compete in mystery events, which are located throughout the approximately 10K (and no longer than 13K) course. Mystery events are cleverly designed and encourage teamwork as well as mental and physical acumen. Location and race details to follow. Events are not revealed until race day when you’re on the course.
