The photography exhibition New York City of Trees by Benjamin Swett is on view in the Arsenal Gallery from March 6 through April 26 (Arbor Day and Frederick Law Olmsted’s birthday). Twenty-eight color portraits of trees around the five boroughs take the viewer up close to some of the extraordinary species that grow along the streets and in the parks, cemeteries, gardens, and backyards of the city. On view in the Arsenal Gallery from March 6 through April 26 (Arbor Day and Frederick Law Olmsted’s birthday), the images have been selected from Swett’s forthcoming book New York City of Trees, to be released by the Quantuck Lane Press on March 6.

After working at Parks for thirteen years, Swett left in 2001 to pursue a career as a freelance photographer but continued to photograph New York City’s urban forest, fascinated by the connections between trees and the city’s history. “We know that trees improve living conditions in cities by filtering and cooling the air, absorbing excess rainwater, and making neighborhoods more attractive,” writes Swett. “But little has been said about the importance of trees as keepers of a city’s past. The aim in taking these pictures—aside from taking the best photographs I could—was to try to bring back into focus an aspect of the city that most people tend to take for granted until something happens to it. The idea has been to remind New Yorkers how much of their own lives and the lives of neighbors these trees quietly contain.”

This project was partially funded through a grant from Furthermore: a program of the J.M. Kaplan Fund, with additional support from the City Parks Foundation.

Madison Square Park Conservancy’s Mad. Sq. Art announces a new installation to inaugurate the spring 2013 season: Topsy-Turvy: A Camera Obscura Installation (2013) by New York-based artists Sandra Gibson and Luis Recoder. On view from March 1 – April 5, 2013, Topsy-Turvy will reimagine one of the world’s oldest moving image devices into a life-sized 10-foot by 10-foot structure. Park visitors will be able to enter the interactive, large-scale installation, which will utilize the physical properties of light to capture images of the surrounding Flatiron District in real time. This centuries-old artistic medium will alter how visitors experience the park and engage with the various elements of New York City’s urban landscape through a new and exciting lens.

Violinist Julianne Klopotic, Pianist Joshua Pierce, and Cellist Lawrence Zoernig join forces to pay honor to one of the original social misfits of his time, Franz Schubert. Eccentric, didactic, this short lived but prolific composer contributed some of the most beloved song cycles and chamber music works of all time. Haunting melodies mixed with explosive exuberance make for a musical journey the ears and heart remember. Klopotic/Pierce/Zoernig bring to Schubert their own eclectic musical backgrounds, drawing the listener into both a dignified and internal experience of these two monumental works.

Special geo-cache programs teach you how to use a GPS while searching for hidden prizes.

Hiking and Orienteering programs feature intensity levels ranging from light (a leisurely stroll on mostly paved paths), to moderate (longer, faster paced hikes on rugged terrain), to vigorous (long distance, with hills and rugged terrain). Urban Park Rangers are role models who encourage children to let their imaginations run wild in a safe, supportive atmosphere. While most of our programs are family friendly, the programs highlighted here are specifically for young children and families. Whether enjoying a family friendly movie under the stars, freeing your imagination playing in nature, or learning about conservation through eco-crafts, a free Ranger program is the perfect addition to your family’s weekend. The ancient sport of archery is an activity just about anyone can participate in. Archery helps to improve your concentration and develop your mental discipline. Like any new skill, archery requires practice and patience to master. Urban Park Ranger-led archery programs sharpen these skills while connecting you with nature by getting you outdoors. Archery is also a great way to build upper body strength and to stay fit! Our trained Rangers will demonstrate the safe and proper way to draw a bow, shoot an arrow, and focus on the target. Discover Archery for yourself and learn to hit your mark!

Families and children, ages 8 years and older, are welcome to participate in our archery programs. Programs are first-come, first-served. Participation in a mandatory safety review led by a trained Ranger is required. All equipment is provided and personal archery equipment is not allowed.

  • Tree Care - Water! Weed! Mulch! Plant flowers!

Workshops are focused on active tree care, so come ready to get your hands dirty and care for street trees along the sidewalk. Please wear closed-toed shoes and layered clothing that can get dirty. Tree stewardship is similar to gardening work, involving bending and kneeling on the sidewalk. Children are always welcome, and must be accompanied by an adult.

This show explores the portraits Alice Austen made on the streets of Manhattan at the turn of the last century. Her curious work captured the faces of New York City’s working class, as the population exploded with an influx of new immigrants, hoping to find the American Dream.

We connect children with nature to encourage active exploration of the natural world. Children who spend time outdoors develop strong imaginations and learn to socialize better with others.

All supplies provided.
