Mariella Bisson’s large-scale, mixed media paintings of picturesque waterfalls in upstate New York are coupled with her preparatory drawings and watercolors in Sunlight, Water and Gravity. Her paintings, created with hundreds of pieces of layered paper, teeter on the edge of abstraction and representation. The overlapping paper replicates the texture of rushing water and rock strata. Motion, gravity, and the endlessness of geological time are as much the subject of Bisson’s paintings as the actual waterfalls.

Wheelchair softball was born over 25 years ago in the Midwest by a few individuals with spinal cord injuries and lower extremity impairments, who still wanted to enjoy America's greatest pastime. These individuals needed to develop a way of playing that would allow easy maneuverability in a wheelchair and keep the fast pace of softball. Thus, a new game was born and played on hard surfaces, such as a parking lots, with a 16-inch softball, which allows wheelchair players to keep one hand one the wheelchair while catching a softball without a glove.

Elaborate, colorful, quizzical, Yinka Shonibare's renowned, textile-based art has been the focus of more than 50 solo museum and gallery exhibitions worldwide. The latest, Yinka Shonibare MBE: Colonial Arrangements, will take place, from May 1st to August 31st, 2015, at Morris-Jumel Mansion. It's a fitting match, with the Mansion's lovingly preserved 18th- and 19th-century interiors set to serve as a baroque backdrop for Shonibare's ornately stylized, Dutch wax-adorned sculpture, including an entirely new, never-before-seen work, commissioned by the Mansion.

The exhibit kicks off May 1st with a two-tiered opening. At 6 p.m., we commence a catered VIP Preview Hour, to be attended by the artist and offering first-look access to Shonibare's awe-striking art. At 7 p.m., we open the Mansion to the general public. The general opening is free; tickets to the VIP Preview are $50. Reservations are required for both. To RSVP call (212) 923-8008 or visit yinkavip@brownpapertickets.com. Throughout five weekends in April and May PIP committee members, New York Junior League volunteers, and external volunteers will spend a day in the park (8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.) gardening, landscaping, painting, and completing other tasks to help spruce up this highly used space. We will provide you with breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt. Please reach out to playground@nyjl.org with any questions or if you are interested in making a donation to this cause.

Please RSVP if you are interested in participating in one or more park days. Registration closes when capacity is reached or the Wednesday prior to that weekend's park days.

About the New York Junior League Playground Improvement Project

For more than 20 years, the Playground Improvement Project (PIP) has been a New York Junior League signature community project. Our volunteers create safe, beautiful, well-organized and educational play spaces for children and other members of the New York City community. PIP focuses on sites and parks that need major renovation and have the greatest impact on the surrounding community. Weekend clean up days include landscaping and repairing the parks. We work with over 700 volunteers a season to help improve the park and make a positive impact on the community.

NYC Parks and Bike New York are proud to present Learn to Ride classes. In these free classes, we’ll teach children the fundamentals of bicycling, preparing them for years of safe and confident riding.

This class teaches a safe, easy, effective way to learn to ride. Using this “balance first” method, parents help get their children rolling while the child does most of the work. Participants learn the basics of balancing, starting, stopping, and steering a bike. Most people learn to ride their bike while taking the class, but even if they don’t, they will leave with an easy, hands-free, crash-free, and low-stress way to learn to ride.

Participants must bring their own bike and helmet. To register, please visit the Bike New York webpage.

Kick off the May migration season with Central Park Conservancy's annual On A Wing Festival. Look for migrating warblers and other songbirds in the Ramble. Meet live bats, butterflies, and birds of prey at the Belvedere Castle. Contribute to the park's biodiversity by releasing live painted lady butterflies into the Shakespeare Garden!

Borrow a Discovery Kit and participate in a scavenger hunt in the Ramble, exploring firsthand how the Conservancy's work has made the Park a sanctuary for birds and other winged beings. This festival features interactive presentations by Central Park Zoo Wildlife Theater, Organization for Bat Conservation, NYC Audubon Society, Urban Park Rangers, and more.

This event takes place rain or shine, except in extreme weather conditions (heavy rain, sustained winds of 30mph or heat index above 95 degrees). For more information, please call (212) 776-1069.
