Mariella Bisson’s large-scale, mixed media paintings of picturesque waterfalls in upstate New York are coupled with her preparatory drawings and watercolors in Sunlight, Water and Gravity. Her paintings, created with hundreds of pieces of layered paper, teeter on the edge of abstraction and representation. The overlapping paper replicates the texture of rushing water and rock strata. Motion, gravity, and the endlessness of geological time are as much the subject of Bisson’s paintings as the actual waterfalls.

Learn how to capture rainwater to benefit your school garden. Conserve water, prevent pollution and stop erosion with rainwater collection.

This workshop will highlight the ways that water can be captured in a school garden to lessen a school garden’s dependence on the municipal water system, prevent pollution from NYC's combined sewer system and prevent flooding and erosion at locations experiencing those problems. Workshop attendees will learn how to assess their site for rainwater capture and determine how much rainfall they can collect using a worksheet. Components and construction of rainwater harvesting systems will be shown using the example of the system at the workshop location. Relative costs of materials and design options of various systems will be highlighted. Attendees will receive copies of GrowNYC's Green Infrastructure manual and a rainwater calculation worksheet.

Lenny Librizzi co-founded the Water Resources Group in New York City in 2001 dedicated to water conservation in community and school gardens. He has built or trained others to build over 100 Rainwater Collection systems in New York City community and school gardens. He led GrowNYC’s effort to create a Green Infrastructure Toolkit in 2013. Since 2010, his musings on community gardening can be found at: http://commmunitygardening.blogspot.com/.

Registered schools will receive 150 gallon rain water barrel.

Take in The Lightening: a Project for Wave Hill’s Aquatic Garden, an immersive, plein-air installation by acclaimed artist by Chris Doyle, with music by composer Jeremy Turner, recorded by the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. Stop by Glyndor Gallery to see Chris Doyle: Landscape Fictions. Visit The Shop, The Café and the Marco Polo Stufano Conservatory, and enjoy informal piano performances in Wave Hill House.

Drifting in Daylight is a dreamy springtime pathway of art that winds through the world’s most iconic park. The multi-part art installation includes performative, participatory, and perceptual work by artists Spencer Finch, Alicia Framis, Nina Katchadourian, Ragnar Kjartansson, Marc Bamuthi Joseph, David Levine, Karyn Olivier, and Lauri Stallings + glo. These works include a soft-serve ice cream truck serving free cones containing ice cream the color of a Central Park sunset, a boat filled with musicians floating on the Harlem Meer, and actors quietly performing moments from iconic movie scenes shot in the park.

As the centerpiece of Central Park Conservancy’s 35th anniversary celebration, this free public exhibition aims to draw visitors into the park’s beautiful north end, much of which has been expertly restored by the Conservancy. The six-weekend show will tempt visitors to transcend their busy lives, losing themselves along a playful trail of sensory experiences.

Wheelchair softball was born over 25 years ago in the Midwest by a few individuals with spinal cord injuries and lower extremity impairments, who still wanted to enjoy America's greatest pastime. These individuals needed to develop a way of playing that would allow easy maneuverability in a wheelchair and keep the fast pace of softball. Thus, a new game was born and played on hard surfaces, such as a parking lots, with a 16-inch softball, which allows wheelchair players to keep one hand one the wheelchair while catching a softball without a glove.

The history of birding and Van Cortlandt Park are inseparable. Influential birders such as Roger Tory Peterson and Allan D. Cruickshank got their starts on Van Cortlandt’s ecologically diverse grounds. These walks, led by NYC Audobon experts, celebrate the tradition set forth by these great ornithologists. Participants will look for various species of residents and migrants and discuss a wide range of avian topics. For more information, please call (212) 691-7483.
