Located along the esplanade leading up to the recently opened High Bridge, Oh Sit! 14 Sculptors Consider the Chair is a group exhibition of nine artists’ public artworks. In a frantic world, finding a chair can be almost impossible and settling comfortably into one can be an enormous satisfaction. Sitting in the wrong seat can cause anxiety and an even pain. Exhibiting artists Dan Bergman, Allan Cyprys, Robert Dell, Gregoire Ferland, Esther Grillo, Christina Jorge, Siena Gillann Porta, Herb Rosenberg and Chuck von Schmidt respond imaginatively to the notion of sitting or using a chair. Oh Sit! is framed as an imperative, a command—a way of asking the viewer to look and really consider the concept “chair” both objectively and subjectively.

Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form that has evolved over centuries into an exciting combination of martial arts, dance, music, and acrobatics. Some of capoeira’s benefits include strength, flexibility, stamina, overall fitness and confidence. Benefits of capoeira for kids include promoting social interaction and sense of belonging, building confidence, discipline and self esteem, promoting a healthy lifestyle so children become active, and healthy, and develop cultural awareness and tolerance. Wear comfortable clothing.

Capoeira was developed in Brazil, but its history extends to Africa and tribes from Angola. Slaves living on Brazilian Plantations who weren’t allowed to openly practice traditional forms of self-defense developed an ingenious method of disguising their training by combining it with dance-like movements, singing, and the rhythms of primitive instruments.

Outdoor Cinema Film Festival Presents: Live-In Maid

Pre-screening performances at 7 PM, film begins at sundown

Norma Aleandro, the grande dame of Argentine cinema (think Meryl Streep crossed with Penelope Cruz) plays a still-elegant haute-bourgeois divorcée, living in a fashionable Buenos Aires apartment, surrounded by a lifetime of consumer goods, but with little cash. Her maid of 30 years massages her feet and freshens her drinks — but makes moves to abandon this sinking ship when the going gets tough. This is a wonderful comedy of class consciousness and codependency that easily and subtly crosses cultural boundaries.

2005, 83 minutes. Directed by Jorge Gaggero.

About the Festival

Film Forum and Socrates Sculpture Park are pleased to announce the 2015 programming for the park’s Outdoor Cinema film festival: eight weeks of international movies shown under the stars, Wednesday evenings, July 1 – August 19. Robert Stromberg's Maleficent stars Angelina Jolie as the title character, who, as a teenager, is a powerful and respected winged fairy helping to rule a magical land full of strange creatures. Her homeland borders a country that is populated by humans and run by the cruel King Henry (Kenneth Cranham). One day, Henry's son Stefan (Jackson Bews) traipses into the fairy's land and meets Maleficent, causing the two crazy teens to fall into forbidden love. Years later, Henry seeks to take over the magical land next to his kingdom, but is thwarted in battle by Maleficent. He demands revenge, and eventually his now-grown son Stefan (played as an adult by Sharlto Copley) succeeds by betraying the fairy and clipping her wings. In response, an infuriated Maleficent swears revenge on Stefan; she gets her chance when the prince becomes king and has his first child, a daughter named Aurora (Elle Fanning) -- as Sleeping Beauty fans will remember, Maleficent curses her to fall into a death-like sleep after pricking her finger on a spinning wheel on her 16th birthday. Stefan demands that all of the spinning wheels be collected, and orders his daughter to be secretly raised in the woods by three good-hearted but dim-witted fairies, who will return her to him the day after her 16th birthday. However, Maleficent refuses to stay away from Aurora and ends up developing maternal feelings for the girl, eventually inspiring her to try to undo the curse she placed upon the princess. - Paraphrase description from Swank website.

Pack a picnic, bring a friend and settle in for a night of premier movies on the pier.

The film will begin when it is dark enough to see the image on the screen which is dependent on the sunset, generally around 8:30 p.m. Seating will open at 6:30, and is available on a first-come first-served basis. You can reserve chairs for their friends once onsite. We put out chairs (about 250 of them) and they normally fill by 7:30 and ground seating is available in front and behind the chair section. Front ground seating is for blankets/butts on ground (the pier is hard made of pavers) and picnics are welcome if trash is disposed of properly. Dogs are welcome on leash and off chairs. People may bring their own chairs and place them behind our chairs on the dark pavers. There is no seating or standing in the Southern aisle of the pier.

Summer on the Hudson programming is free to the public. Seating is limited, unreserved, and available on a first-come, first-served basis beginning 1-2 hours before the event. If there is heavy rain at the time of the event, the event will be cancelled. Up to the minute cancelation information will be posted on our twitter the Summer On the Hudson's Twitter account, @summeronhudson , and if the event is canceled this event listing will be updated to reflect that (about 2 hours before the event/1 hour before wellness classes). No rain dates are scheduled. If attendance reaches maximum capacity management reserves the right to close participation.

In a kind of prequel of Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent tells the story of the title character, played by Angelina Jolie, who engages in a life-changing battle. As ruler of her land, she fights the king who rules the neighboring land, and meets and falls in love with his son, Stefan. When Stefan grows up, he turns on Maleficent, causing her to vengefully kidnap his first child, Sleeping Beauty. Rated PG.

Marika Hughes & Bottom Heavy grab tradition by its head, reshaping the landscape of genre and sound.

Marika fronts the band with such ease and so naturally, it makes one wonder why cellos haven’t always fronted bands. Her stylings are reminiscent of her classical upbringing yet defying expectation as she moves us with her supple vocals through jazz, funk, rock, and back again, surprising us along the way.

Rooted in groove—with Kyle Sanna on guitar, Fred Cash on bass, Charlie Burnham on violin, and Tony Mason on drums—Bottom Heavy instantly establishes itself as a strong new sound; flowing freely between funky instrumentals, dreamy lullaby, free improv, and killer songs. As you are charmed by her cello, her voice, and her band, you will be charmed by Marika herself: fiercely authentic, her audience an old friend invited along for the fabulous ride.

This series includes music, storytelling, and theater for young audiences up to age 7. Wear sunscreen! Stroller parking in designated area is mandatory.

Arm of the Sea was founded in 1982 by Marlena Marallo and Patrick Wadden as an experimental hybrid performance group combining art, ecology, and social action. They continue to experiment with this ephemeral art form as a symbolic visual language that can illuminate the links between human communities and the life-support processes of the planet. The company tours to cultural centers, festivals, community venues, and schools throughout the Northeast and beyond.
