Rockaway!, a free public arts festival sponsored by the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) to celebrate the reopening of Fort Tilden and recognize the ongoing recovery of the Rockaway peninsula, opens June 29 and continues through September 1, 2014. Invited by the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA), an association of artists based in and around the Rockaways, and the JBRPC, MoMA PS1 has assisted and supported the conception of this festival.

One component of the festival is a group exhibition organized in collaboration with the Honolulu Biennial on the grounds of the newly restored Rockaway Beach Surf Club on Beach 87th Street in Rockaway Beach. Following Hurricane Sandy, the Surf Club was the one of the largest relief centers on the peninsula; their organization facilitated and directed over 5,000 volunteers, with major contributions from MoMA PS1. The exhibition celebrates the efforts of the Rockaway community of surfers and artists in rebuilding their neighborhood.

For details and times of the rest of the exhibit, please visit the Rockaway! website.

Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form that has evolved over centuries into an exciting combination of martial arts, dance, music, and acrobatics. Some of capoeira’s benefits include strength, flexibility, stamina, overall fitness and confidence. Benefits of capoeira for kids include promoting social interaction and sense of belonging, building confidence, discipline and self esteem, promoting a healthy lifestyle so children become active, and healthy, and develop cultural awareness and tolerance. Wear comfortable clothing.

Capoeira was developed in Brazil, but its history extends to Africa and tribes from Angola. Slaves living on Brazilian Plantations who weren’t allowed to openly practice traditional forms of self-defense developed an ingenious method of disguising their training by combining it with dance-like movements, singing, and the rhythms of primitive instruments.

SummerStage Kids presented by Disney presents a special evening of Circus! Enjoy world class performers on stage as well as strolling performers are part of Circus to Go! by the Big Apple Circus, bringing family entertainment outside the tent.

Founded and under the direction or Samuel Roy and Nicolas Boivin Gravel, THROW2CATCH (T2C) produces contemporary circus performances and is based in Montreal, Canada. THROW2CATCH offers shows aimed at large public audiences, and provides creation and art direction for developing made to measure and original concepts for corporate and public events. T2C distinguishes itself through innovation and creativity of the performances, utilizing the circus arts with a unique and surprising originality. Samuel and Nicolas met in the 1990’s at the École de cirque de Verdun. Their artistic collaboration urged them to create a juggling act called THROW2CATCH. After attending the École Nationale de Cirque de Montréal, the duo presented their act around the world with major companies such as Cirque du Soleil, Cirque Éloize, Les 7 Doigts de la Main, Cavalia and the Arsenal Theater Company. The company have now 2 shows on the road. RESET presented in the venues all around the world and T3C.

Loki Circus Theater was founded by Susan Voyticky and Michelle Arvin to create innovative movement theater productions using a mixture of circus, physical theater and dance. Performances created with circus push audiences beyond the confines and limits of reality, in celebration of the infinite potential of the human being. The daring inherent in the expression of a circus artist is a call to our own individual audacity, an affirmation of rewards given to those who rise to the challenge of being human. Loki Circus Theater productions achieve this synthesis--combining the effect of circus with the affect of theatre.

As part of its Outdoor Cinema 2014 season, Socrates Sculpture Park will be screening Microcosmos, a French film directed by Claude Nuridsany and Marie Pérennou. Microcosmos features some of the most gorgeous macro-photography of insects ever put on screen. Shooting with custom cameras and lenses that took three years to develop, the filmmakers turn a French meadow into an otherwordly adventure as its denizens—a seemingly infinite variety of bugs—crawl, fly, creep, and leap. This is an amazing voyage into a surprising and often humorous miniature universe, a surreal, wordless visual treat for children and adults alike. More here.

Pre-screening performances and food begin at 7pm; screening begins at sundown.

Outdoor Cinema is an annual international film festival that takes place every Wednesday evening in July and August. Focusing on a different country or culture each screening, this program invites visitors to picnic on the grass, see musical and dance performances, enjoy the waterfront breeze, and watch exceptional international films on an outdoor screen.

For details and times of the rest of the exhibit, please visit the Rockaway! website.

Each week, Wave Hill educators share some of their favorite nature stories. These stories––classics and more––will come to life through interactive readings, sing-alongs and puppets. Programs are held outdoors in good weather; in inclement weather we will meet in Wave Hill House. Sometimes we all feel like a grumpy goat or a sneaky fox. This week, laugh along as we read humorous tales of some very grumpy, hungry, or silly animals, then join in as we sing some of our favorite nonsense songs.

Our books this week are The Little Mouse, The Big Ripe Strawberry, and The Big Hungry Bear by Don and Audrey Wood; Grumpy Goat by Brett Helquist; and Do Like a Duck Does by Judy Hindley. Ideal for children ages 3 to 6 with their adult companions. Free with admission to the grounds.

The Winter's Tale by William Shakespeare, Directed by Nicholas Martin-Smith

Written late in William Shakespeare’s career, The Winter’s Tale (1609-1611) is a story of jealousy, loss, and redemption. Leontes, the King of Sicily, believes his pregnant wife is carrying his best friend’s love child. Leontes’s jealousy turns to tyranny as the king proceeds to destroy his entire family and a lifelong friendship. Sixteen long years pass, and we witness one of the most astonishing endings in English literature. (summary via Shmoop dot com)

SummerStage Kids presented by Disney presents a special evening of Circus! Enjoy world class performers on stage as well as strolling performers are part of Circus to Go! by the Big Apple Circus, bringing family entertainment outside the tent.

The Acrobatic Conundrum was founded in 2012 by Terry Crane and Joselynn Engstrom, with the mission to create performance experiences that delight and engage audiences. Conundrum shows feature moments of absurd and intimate humanity. The artists of the Acrobatic Conundrum tell their stories as individuals as well as take physical risks live onstage. As a company, they are dedicated to a vision of human courage, connection, and collaboration. The troupe has produced three shows to date: Volumes I & II, and The Way Out. The company has performed in various venues around the Pacific Northwest and headlined the Chicago Contemporary Circus Festival, the first festival of its kind.

Chelsea O'Brian is a performer, teacher and artistic director of ChelseaO Productions. She has worked in the mediums of circus, dance, aerial dance, film and theatre. Her works have been supported by the Canada Council, the Ontario Arts Council, Conseil des Arts et lettres de Quebec, Adesam, and the City of Vancouver public art program. She has performed with companies such as Cirque Plume in France, Cavalia, Sens Productions, Rea’son d’etre productions, and Zaccho Dance Theatre. She is known in the circus industry for having invented the Aerial Kite, a unique circus apparatus. Her Aerial Kites can now be found internationally. Chelsea is currently based in San Francisco. Cirqu’elle premiered in the summer of 2013 at Zaccho studio in San Francisco. Since then it has toured to Santa Barbara and Richmond CA, and Chelsea is thrilled to bring the show to SummerStage!

"Perfect Catch" is the dynamic juggling team of Michael Karas and Jen Slaw. In 2011, Michael and Jen decided to create a theatrical juggling show that would appeal to the theater goers of New York City. An adorable 50-seat theater, The Canal Park Playhouse, agreed to produce their whimsical idea and the result was a huge success that ran for two seasons. "Perfect Catch: A Throw-mantic Comedy" was named a Critic's Pick by Backstage Magazine and received a rave review from the NYTimes as well, citing Jen and Michael as "expert jugglers". Jen and Michael continue to tour their show, promoting theatrical juggling as well as "huggling", the combination of hugging while juggling. In fact, they set a world record in 2013 on live television for the longest huggling session without a drop - 33 minutes and 43 seconds. They’re excited to present their show at SummerStage – enjoy and come say hi after the show!

This Dendrology 'walk and talk' is part of a new summer program, a thematic series of nature walks, talks, and art workshops, designed to encompass the various natural elements of Conference House Park.

Conference House Park is home to many diverse and unique plant and tree communities within its 265 acres. The communities range from tall maturing forest stands, young groves, open fields, pocket forested wetlands and wet woods. The Park contains a rare maritime Northern Hackberry forest (due to the high calcium levels, from the high number of discarded oyster shells in the soil).

This educational 'walk and talk' is designed to increase the appreciation and understanding of the numerous tree and plant species found within the various forest types contained the park.

Multiple events (including drawing workshops and dune walk) are running through August; please see the events calendar for the other dates.
