Wheelchair softball was born over 25 years ago in the Midwest by a few individuals with spinal cord injuries and lower extremity impairments, who still wanted to enjoy America's greatest pastime. These individuals needed to develop a way of playing that would allow easy maneuverability in a wheelchair and keep the fast pace of softball. Thus, a new game was born and played on hard surfaces, such as a parking lots, with a 16-inch softball, which allows wheelchair players to keep one hand one the wheelchair while catching a softball without a glove.

The play is set during the latter days of the Roman Empire and tells the fictional story of Titus, a general in the Roman army, who is engaged in a cycle of revenge with Tamora, Queen of the Goths. It is Shakespeare's bloodiest and most violent work and traditionally was one of his least respected plays. Although it was extremely popular in its day, by the later seventeenth century it had fallen out of favour. In the Victorian era, it was disapproved of primarily because of what was considered to be a distasteful use of graphic violence, but from around the middle of the twentieth century its reputation began to improve.

Once a free and open society, Vienna is bitterly divided between high morals and the greed of commerce. Disguised as a monk, the duke wanders the land, prying into the daily lives of his subjects. When his deputy sentences Claudio to death, the virtue and purity of his sister, Isabella, is the price she must pay to save her brother’s life. Measure for Measure is directed by artistic director Stephen Burdman.

Enter Third World, a group of friends who found their own place in this rich ecosystem, “seamlessly fusing reggae with soul and pop” (Billboard). They caught Marley’s eye, were asked to tour in support of the Wailers, and the rest is history. Forty-plus years and ten Grammy nominations later, they are as cool, steady and easy as ever.

Located along the esplanade leading up to the recently opened High Bridge, Oh Sit! 14 Sculptors Consider the Chair is a group exhibition of nine artists’ public artworks. In a frantic world, finding a chair can be almost impossible and settling comfortably into one can be an enormous satisfaction. Sitting in the wrong seat can cause anxiety and an even pain. Exhibiting artists Dan Bergman, Allan Cyprys, Robert Dell, Gregoire Ferland, Esther Grillo, Christina Jorge, Siena Gillann Porta, Herb Rosenberg and Chuck von Schmidt respond imaginatively to the notion of sitting or using a chair. Oh Sit! is framed as an imperative, a command—a way of asking the viewer to look and really consider the concept “chair” both objectively and subjectively.

What are nature’s rhythms? What do they sound like when they are not in sync? Can we find healing through listening and balancing rhythm? Make a simple drum to experience the force of sound, or a wind chime to test out breezes, and get in tune as we join Bronx based musical troupe ¡Retumba! in a group dance and drum circle! Free, and admission to the grounds is free until noon.

Join us this summer at the Wyckoff farmhouse for a natural dyeing workshop. This workshop is part of a series of six workshops for adults (and teens) in what we’re calling “creative homesteading”. Get your hands dirty in the garden, experiment with natural dyes, learn about herbal medicine, preserve your harvest, and more at the oldest house in New York!

Did you know your garden is already growing a wealth of materials that you can use to beautify other things? Come learn how to take the otherwise inedible plants in your garden and dye various fibers. We will use plant materials grown specifically for dyeing as well as less commonly used dye plants. This workshop will be an exploration of the potential and uses of natural materials.

Advance (free) registration is required. For more information and to register, please visit wyckoffmuseum.org/workshops.

Now in its third season, Socrates and Norte Maar present a residency and performance program, bringing New York-based choreographers and their dancers to a unique waterfront environment. Three weeklong residencies will each culminate in a free public dance performance on an outdoor stage in the park. Throughout their creative process, participating choreographers will be in full view of the public so that visitors will witness cutting-edge dance and movement in the making, and experience fully-produced performances every Saturday.

As part of the Young Choreographers program, Dance at Socrates will also be pairing aspiring teen choreographers (ages 13-18) with experienced Norte Maar choreographers in residence.
