September is National Yoga Month! On Tuesday, September 30, Chelsea Recreation Center is celebrating its amazing yoga classes. Come to class dressed in red, white or blue. Exercise is that much more fun with a theme!

In Ashtanga Yoga, start to deepen your experience of yoga according to the Ashtanga tradition of yoga master, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. This class will give you a great workout and a step by step introduction to the traditional primary series (Yoga Chikitsa) established by jois in Mysore, India and practiced all over the world today. With consistent effort, this challenging and rewarding practice lightens the body and the mind, cleanses the organs, cultivates health, strength, steadiness, flexibility, ease, and peace. It also provides students with the certainty and confidence to be able to practice yoga anywhere on your own.

Ever wonder what you’re looking at when you look up at the beautiful night sky? Often, some of the brightest objects in our night sky aren’t stars at all, but planets. Come preview the film Women in Space*, and hear Jaclyn Avidon, Chair of the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York’s Education and Educational Outreach Committees, talk about what planets are currently visible in the sky. Join us for some breathtaking views of those planets and stars from the roof. Guests are welcome to bring their own binoculars and telescopes and set them up alongside the experts.

*Women in Space is part of Community Cinema’s new series, MAKERS, a six-part PBS series profiling the impact women have had over
the past 50 years in comedy, politics, space, war, business, and Hollywood.

Film screening from 7:30-8:30 p.m. followed by a lecture from 8:30-9:00 p.m., followed by a sky viewing 9:00-10:00 p.m.

Taxonomy is a collection of George Boorujy’s dynamic large-scale paintings of North American animals with disarmingly human characteristics, as well as a series of his preliminary clay models and drawings. Inhabitants of New York City and other urban centers often think of themselves as removed from nature, but Boorujy’s hyperrealistic ink-on-paper portraits force us to rethink our relationship with animals and our own place within the environment.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

Join artist DB Lampman to celebrate the installation of her exhibition The Dance, on view in Tappen Park, Staten Island.

The Dance consists of five figures floating 15 feet above the ground. The figures, formed with steel and wrapped in nylon, hold hands and dance whimsically within a rectangular steel structure. At night the figures light up and cast a glow around the neighboring trees. The Dance is inspired by Henri Matisse’s painting by the same name. Similar interlocked figures can be found throughout art history, including Mayan art, African tribal sculptures, and ancient Mesopotamia, among others, to symbolize family, community, and spiritual or universal connectivity. Lampman uses this symbol for the coming together of the Staten Island community.

NYC Audubon experts lead the way as we marvel at quirky but logical bird behavior and delicate feathers in exquisite patterns.

Influential birders such as Roger Tory Peterson and Allan D. Cruickshank learned their craft on Van Cortlandt Park’s ecologically diverse grounds, and these walks celebrate the tradition set by them. Participants will look for resident and migrant species and discuss a wide range of avian topics. No registration necessary. No limit. Free. When birding on your own, check the Nature Sightings log in front of the Nature Center before you head out. At the end of walks, please add your sightings to the log, so others may be aware of recent nature happenings in the park.

Bring binoculars if you have them and wear sturdy shoes!

The Bronx Latin AMerican Art Biennial presents the exhibition Open For Discussion. Art by Eduardo Terranova, Marylin Caminero, Pablo Caviede, Yarisa Colon, Josue Guarionex, Elizabeth Moreno, Delilah Montoya, Justo Carreras, Alejandro Epifanio, Jose Ortiz, Yehimar Abyssys, Carolina Bermudez, Melissa Calderon, Wanda Cotorreal, Martita Ibanez, Jonas Hidalgo.

The exhibition suggests that art discussion is inherently an expression of populism and protest; therefore it is important not to deny the mass attraction to it, but to recognize its communicative power.

Seven years ago, the city launched the MillionTreesNYC initiative with an ambitious goal: to plant and care for one million new trees across the city. The benefits to be gained were clear: improved air and water quality; reduced pollution from storm water runoff, flooding and erosion; and reduced energy costs, to name a few.

Join us during our fall volunteer planting events in natural areas of parks and help create healthy new forests!

All tools, gloves, and plant material will be provided. Please wear long pants and sturdy closed-toe shoes appropriate to working in a forested area.
