Located along the esplanade leading up to the recently opened High Bridge, Oh Sit! 14 Sculptors Consider the Chair is a group exhibition of nine artists’ public artworks. In a frantic world, finding a chair can be almost impossible and settling comfortably into one can be an enormous satisfaction. Sitting in the wrong seat can cause anxiety and an even pain. Exhibiting artists Dan Bergman, Allan Cyprys, Robert Dell, Gregoire Ferland, Esther Grillo, Christina Jorge, Siena Gillann Porta, Herb Rosenberg and Chuck von Schmidt respond imaginatively to the notion of sitting or using a chair. Oh Sit! is framed as an imperative, a command—a way of asking the viewer to look and really consider the concept “chair” both objectively and subjectively.

On September 21, 1965, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held its inaugural meeting following the passing of the Landmarks Law in April. At that meeting, the 1832 Merchant’s House was designated the first landmark in the borough of Manhattan. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the meeting, the Merchant’s House and Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation will give walking tours of 19th century landmark treasures of the NoHo Historic District.

On this one-hour walking tour, promenaders will see 11 buildings designated as individual New York City landmarks. In 1832, when the Merchant’s House was built, elegant Greek Revival row houses of red brick and white marble flanked the tree-lines streets of this fashionable residential enclave, known as the Bond Street area. At mid-century, cast iron made its first appearance and commercial buildings and factories came to dominate the area. By century’s end, Louis Sullivan’s 12-story steel-framed office building was scraping the sky on Bleecker Street.

Alice Austen House's 30th anniversary exhibition brings to light the history of the museum’s National and New York City Landmark building, tracing its path from one-room Dutch farmhouse in the 1690s, to Victorian Gothic cottage and home to early American photographer Alice Austen (1866-1952), to protected landmark, to public museum. Presented upon the museum’s 30th anniversary and as part of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the NYC Landmarks Law, this exhibition explores the Alice Austen House’s significance in New York City history and tells the fascinating story of the saving of the house from threatened destruction. The act of exploring, recording and recounting is central to the artistic practice of many artists. The fall exhibition, Field Notes, brings together three artists—Matthew Friday, David McQueen and Michelle Stuart—whose projects in Glyndor Gallery and on the grounds will encourage visitors to discover connections of their own. The Sunroom Project Space hosts two site-specific installations, both by this year’s Van Lier Visual Artist Fellows: Julian Chams has created tactile, photo-based assemblages of memories, feelings and experiences, seeking to soften our information-laden world; Beatrice Glow’s installation converts the Sun Porch into a retelling of trans-Pacific histories, using sights and scents that reference the spice trade.

The two things the people of this posh town treasure most are their children and their cheeses; unfortunately, those are also the things that the Boxtrools - a race of unsightly, sewer-dwelling creatures - covet most.

The tour will explore the key role of the Brooklyn waterfront in the American Revolution and the Civil War.

Over the centuries New York’s waterways have cast the city in crucial military roles. During the American Revolution the British coveted the city as a base of operations for their troops and ships. And during the Civil War, the city’s industrial capacity made it the launch point for the ironclad Monitor. Historian, Barnet Schecter, will tell the dramatic story of the Brooklyn waterfront’s key role in these two great conflicts.

Awesome Asana Yoga is an hour-long exercise in body stretching and mind cleansing taught by registered yoga teacher Chelsea Best. As Chelsea says, “Awesome Asana offers a unique yogic journey, linking breath with movement in a meditative Vinyasa Flow class style designed to awaken the spirit and bring the body and mind back to a place of peace.” The class is Open Level Vinyasa, and is moderately challenging.

MJM’s Awesome Asana is part of Chelsea’s “Localize Yoga” project, which aims to make yoga affordable and accessible – to present it “as a possibility, rather than as a luxury” – to the denizens of upper Manhattan. The class is $5, and mats, should you need one, are provided.
