Meek flower shop assistant Seymour (Rick Moranis) pines for co-worker Audrey (Ellen Greene). During a total eclipse, he discovers an unusual plant he names Audrey II, which feeds only on human flesh and blood. The growing plant attracts a great deal of business for the previously struggling store. After Seymour feeds Audrey's boyfriend, Orin (Steve Martin), to the plant after Orin's accidental death, he must come up with more bodies for the increasingly bloodthirsty plant. Rated PG-13.

This animated feature from the creators of Toy Story shows us the life behind the scenes of things that go bump in the night. The big, blue and fuzzy James P. Sullivan (Goodman) and his opinionated, one-eyed roommate Mike Wzowski (Crystal) are two professional “scare specialists” Their job is to harness the energy created when they make little kids scream. This energy is bottled and keeps their society going. When they accidentally let a young girl named Boo into their world behind the closets and under the beds, it throws their life into chaos. Boo finds out that the monsters are more scared of her than she is of them. Rated G.

Located along the esplanade leading up to the recently opened High Bridge, Oh Sit! 14 Sculptors Consider the Chair is a group exhibition of nine artists’ public artworks. In a frantic world, finding a chair can be almost impossible and settling comfortably into one can be an enormous satisfaction. Sitting in the wrong seat can cause anxiety and an even pain. Exhibiting artists Dan Bergman, Allan Cyprys, Robert Dell, Gregoire Ferland, Esther Grillo, Christina Jorge, Siena Gillann Porta, Herb Rosenberg and Chuck von Schmidt respond imaginatively to the notion of sitting or using a chair. Oh Sit! is framed as an imperative, a command—a way of asking the viewer to look and really consider the concept “chair” both objectively and subjectively.

For the three year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, Rockaway Waterfront Alliance is bringing people of all ages together to create a natural protective buffer for the Rockaway community. As we learned from the storm, the natural vegetation and dunes that exist off our shores served as a protective buffer to the homes and businesses that exist in these areas. Many of these dunes were compromised by the storm and need to be replenished to be effective.

Families and people of all ages are welcome to participate in this dune restoration project. Students can receive community service hours. No registration is required. This event is rain or shine, so please dress accordingly.

When The Bronx County Historical Society was founded in 1955, it did not have a permanent location to offer public programs, store a collection, or simply have a place to headquarter their operation. Some private residences and public libraries were used for free lectures while volunteers gave neighborhood walking tours. However, as The Society operation began to grow and its collection increased, there was a need for permanent housing. In 1965, the historic Valentine-Varian House was donated to The Society and moved from its original location to parkland across the street. Since then, The Society has expanded its operation and aquired two more buildings on Bainbridge Avenue: one for a research library, one for administrative offices in 1982, and another just two doors down which opened as The Bronx County Archives in 2001.

BCHS educator Angel Hernandez will lead a tour of the campus of The Bronx County Historical Society in the Norwood section of The Bronx.

The tour will begin in front of The Society’s research library at 3309 Bainbridge Avenue.

Awesome Asana Yoga is an hour-long exercise in body stretching and mind cleansing taught by registered yoga teacher Chelsea Best. As Chelsea says, “Awesome Asana offers a unique yogic journey, linking breath with movement in a meditative Vinyasa Flow class style designed to awaken the spirit and bring the body and mind back to a place of peace.” The class is Open Level Vinyasa, and is moderately challenging.

MJM’s Awesome Asana is part of Chelsea’s “Localize Yoga” project, which aims to make yoga affordable and accessible – to present it “as a possibility, rather than as a luxury” – to the denizens of upper Manhattan. The class is $5, and mats, should you need one, are provided.

Pumpkin Flotilla Guidelines

Get a pumpkin: Bring a pumpkin that weighs about 8 pounds after it’s carved; that’s approximately the size of a soccer ball. Mini or extra-large pumpkins cannot be accepted for the flotilla.

Get creative: All pumpkins must come with tops and be gutted and carved at home. Jack-o’-lanterns with artificial decorations, such as paint, glitter, marker, food dye, paper, plastic, light bulbs, candles, or floats cannot be accepted for the flotilla.

A light and floating device will be provided when you register your jack-o’-lantern at the event.

Drop off your pumpkin: We will have two designated drop-off areas near the Dana Discovery Center between 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Space in the flotilla is limited to 50 pumpkins, so make sure your creation meets all the requirements.

Watch the Harlem Meer get spooky! Once the activities are finished at twilight (about 6:30 p.m.), find a spot along the edge of the Harlem Meer and watch as the jack-o’-lanterns float by in New York’s largest pumpkin flotilla!

Please note: Pumpkins in our flotilla cannot be returned. Thank you for your contribution to our event.

After the service, mourners follow the coffin to nearby New York City Marble Cemetery – rarely open to the public – for the graveside service and cemetery talk. 19th century mourning attire is encouraged.

New York artist Ruth Wetzel spends hours trekking through wetlands in waders photographing magnified views of diverse plant life and ecosystems found in New York. She isolates intimate details in the swamps—plumes of sediment, verdant foliage, and colorful reflections—allowing abstract forms to shine. Swampland includes over 30 small and large format photographs of wetlands around her upstate Stone Ridge, New York home, as well as a newly created series of photographs documenting New York City’s Alley Pond Park in Queens, Prospect Park Lake, and Spuyten Duyvil Creek.

Presented upon the museum’s 30th anniversary and as part of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the NYC Landmarks Law, this exhibition explores the Alice Austen House’s significance in New York City history and tells the fascinating story of the saving of the house from threatened destruction. Starting last year on Alice Austen’s birthday, the Alice Austen House began a project documenting the grounds and waterfront from Austen’s home, Clear Comfort. Each day since then the house, grounds, and activities of the site have been documented, much like Alice Austen did over a hundred years ago. The museum will present an installation of nearly 200 snapshots capturing the daily life of this historic site and invite visitors to participate in the project.

Alice Austen Everyday is on view September 26 – December 30, 2015 and shown in conjunction with the museum’s 30th Anniversary exhibition “Becoming Clear Comfort: History of a Landmark," tracing the history of the house. Recently tagged images will also be on view, presented on an iPad in the gallery. Exhibition s on view during museum hours: Tuesday - Sunday 11:00am-5:00pm.

Be like Alice Austen: Upload images taken during the day to social media using the hashtag #aliceausteneveryday. Not on social media? Email photos with title, date, and name of photographer to info@aliceausten.org to be included in the project.

Cover Photo Contest: Submit a #aliceausteneveryday photo of the house and grounds of Clear Comfort to info@aliceausten.org by November 1, 2015. The selected winner’s photo will be used as the Alice Austen House’s Facebook Cover Photo.

The Ocean Breeze Wave Runners Youth Track Club has been established to give back to the community through the sport we all love: track & field. No prior experience is needed and all children ages 7 - 17 years old are encouraged to join!

The Ocean Breeze Wave Runners Youth Track Club will strive to develop and create a world class and progressive tradition within the Track and Field/Cross Country Athletics community. Practices will include training in cross country, sprinting events, middle distance and distance events, field events (including jumping and throwing events), and much more.

With our universal belief in athletics as a stepping stone for success, we feel that the Ocean Breeze Wave Runners can promote, develop, and empower our youth through physical training and mental discipline. Through hard work, motivation, and dedication, members will be able to achieve their goals and, ultimately, cultivate a foundation for a successful lifestyle. We believe, with these skills, the children of the Ocean Breeze Wave Runners Track Club will develop good practices and improve their character and confidence.

Our mission as a Track Club is to encourage young athletes to prepare rigorously for all challenges, develop a trust and belief in themselves and others, believes they can accomplish anything with the correct mindset and effort, and consistently train for personal and team improvement.
