Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

This Valentine’s Day, celebrate your love of Central Park at Central Park Conservancy's fourth annual Ice Festival. Witness ice-carving artists from Okamoto Studio use electric chain saws, chisels, and picks to transform more than 3,000 pounds of ice into a glistening replica of the Park’s most romantic statue - Romeo and Juliet by Milton Hebald (1966).

As night falls, revel among colorful lights as the Mall becomes a 1980s-themed silent disco with live DJs, all as part of Central Park Conservancy’s 35th Anniversary celebration.

Events

3:00 pm – 5:00 pm: Live ice carving by Okamoto Studio

3:00 pm: InstaMeet, a creative photo challenge; visit Central Park's official Instagram account, @centralparknyc, for details

5:00 pm – 7:00 pm: Silent Disco with three DJ's simultaneously spinning 80's, Top 40, and your favorite NYC artists into headphones powered by: Quiet Events

  • Central Park Conservancy Trivia
  • 80's-themed photo booth fun

  • Bites, treats, and other food truck fare for purchase by Milk Truck, Waffles and Dinges, and Uncle Gussy's
  • Dazzling lights in a romantic Central Park setting

What is a Silent Disco?

It's a dance party with headphones; you choose the music. Starting at 5:00 pm, two live DJs take the stage at the same time, playing 80's, Top 40, and your favorite NYC artists. You choose the channel with your favorite music genre and dance the night away. The glowing, color-coded headsets show which music other partygoers are listening to, so you can dance along with your friends.

What to Wear

Baby, it's cold outside! Dress warmly; the event is entirely outdoors. Otherwise, dress to celebrate Central Park Conservancy’s 35th Anniversary - styles from the 1980's and today are welcome!

RSVP and More Info

Open to all ages. Free; RSVP via Eventbrite is strongly recommended but not required. Onsite registration is also available. No bag/coat check available. The annual Emerging Artist Fellowship (EAF) Exhibition is a cornerstone of Socrates Sculpture Park’s visual arts programming and is widely acclaimed for the ambition, breadth, and innovation of the works on view. Featuring fifteen artists, EAF14 is a survey of the compelling and diverse state of sculpture today.

Each EAF14 artist has engaged with the larger narrative of public space in a dynamic and daring way, building upon Socrates Sculpture Park’s goal to present socially aware, inspiring art in the public realm. EAF14 artists were selected through a highly competitive process that attracted a broad field of nearly 300 candidates, reviewed by the park’s curatorial advisors Anne Barlow (Executive Director, Art in General) and Joe Sheftel (Joe Sheftel Gallery, New York). Selected EAF14 artists were awarded a 2014 Emerging Artist Fellowship, including 24/7 access to the park’s outdoor studio and facilities, as well as the financial, technical, and curatorial support to realize his or her most ambitious work possible.

NYC Parks’ Ebony Society invites you to celebrate Black History Month with the Arsenal Gallery exhibition The Migration.

In the midst of tremendous upheaval—two world wars and the Great Depression—a vast movement of people, some 6 million African American descendants of the Antebellum South, fled the racial segregation and discrimination of Jim Crow laws for northern and western U.S. cities. The “Great Migration,” as it is commonly termed, caused a seismic societal demographic shift and left an indelible mark on the urbanization of America. Twenty-two artists share their interpretations of this historical epoch and its impact.

NYC Parks is pleased to present the exhibition: “Native Ensemble: Artists Chronicle Staten Island’s Natural Spaces”, featuring local Staten Island artists that will run from February 13 – March 29, 2015, with an opening reception on Thursday, February 12th from 7-9 p.m. in the Lenape Gallery at the Conference House Park Visitor Center. The exhibition is curated by Sarah Yuster.

The eight artists featured in the show: David DiLillo, Ann Marie McDonnell, Michael McWeeney, Gail Middleton, Bill Murphy, Kristi Pfister, Melissa West and Sarah Yuster will present inspired 2-D and 3-D works created in a variety of art mediums that explore Staten Island’s natural elements and open spaces in conventional and unconventional techniques. Allusions to the human narrative in these works give way in an effort to shape the poetic and elusive concept of time and nature.

Lenape Gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. For additional information please contact Frank Gessner at (718) 227-1463.

This ongoing series is hosted by Wave Hill’s Friends of Horticulture Committee and is devoted to landscape design and the meaning of our interactions with plants and the natural world. Ulrich Lorimer offers his vision for how to marry horticulture with field botany— the experience of plants in the context of their communities in the wild—as an approach that yields intimate clues for using native plants in a garden setting. At the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, where Lorimer has been Curator of the Native Flora Garden for nine years, the results have been rich and rewarding. Prior to joining the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Lorimer spent three years as a Wave Hill Gardener. The last lecture in this series takes place March 18.
