Taxonomy is a collection of George Boorujy’s dynamic large-scale paintings of North American animals with disarmingly human characteristics, as well as a series of his preliminary clay models and drawings. Inhabitants of New York City and other urban centers often think of themselves as removed from nature, but Boorujy’s hyperrealistic ink-on-paper portraits force us to rethink our relationship with animals and our own place within the environment.

Earthworms, millipedes, sowbugs, and other decomposers play a vital role in healthy forest ecosystems. We will take a short walk on the trail near the nature center in search of invertebrates and use magnifying glasses, bug boxes, and our observational skills to examine them more closely. For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

You may experience yourself drifting in and out of sleep during the gentle and quiet sessions. You will gain a deeper sense of well-being and relaxation, with a better understanding of your body and how it feels. If you suffer migraines or back or neck pain, the instructor will advice you on the specific technique to alleviate the area of concern.

Mats and materials are provided. Come in loose and comfortable pants and clothing. Most people remove their shoes.

Staten Island Arts and the Conference House Association, in conjunction with NYC/Staten Island Parks, are pleased to announce the launch of 'September Shorts' an inaugural film series featuring the work of local up and coming filmmakers. The new film series will run three Friday evenings (9/5, 9/19 and 9/26) during the month of September. The screenings will begin at 7 p.m. and take place in the lower kitchen gathering room of the historic Conference House located within Conference House Park on Staten Island's south shore.

'September Shorts' concludes on Friday September 26th with 'Sci-Fi/Thiller Night' featuring new films by Scott & Chris Comics and Lucille Hansen. Scott Meaney and Christopher Laudando met in Tottenville High School during the early 1990s. The duo spent their lunch period in the library discussing the exciting music and film revolution that was taking place at the time. These sessions would be filled with laughs, debates, and a lot of shushing from annoyed librarians.

Lucille Hansen is a Staten Island native filmmaker. She is a writer, actor, director. She has produced music videos, shorts, web content and more but Awake is the first film that she produced, wrote & directed without the outside help of a production company. Upcoming projects include a new short film, Day Trip, a tragic love story.

Doors 6:30PM / Show 7:30PM

James Mercer and Brian Burton a/k/a Danger Mouse have completed work on the first album by their new and ongoing band Broken Bells. Broken Bells features Mercer on vocals, guitars and bass while Burton plays organ, drums, piano, synths and bass. The pair play all the instruments on the album with the exception of a full string section arranged by Daniele Luppi. Broken Bells was recorded by Todd Monfalcone and Kennie Takahashi at Mondo Studio in Los Angeles and produced by Burton. Each a long-tim... (more)e fan of the other's work, Burton and Mercer first met face-to-face backstage at the 2004 Roskilde Festival in Copenhagen. The pair immediately hit it off and kept in touch over the prevailing half decade and in May 2008 seized the opportunity to finally collaborate on original music together. Once in the studio, the musical floodgates opened, an intuitive ease and seemingly ego-less telepathy producing an astonishing flow of new material over the course of a year. From more than 20 pieces of new music written and recorded, Broken Bells was assembled from 10 songs that coalesced together the most seamlessly.

NYC Audubon experts lead the way as we marvel at quirky but logical bird behavior and delicate feathers in exquisite patterns.

Influential birders such as Roger Tory Peterson and Allan D. Cruickshank learned their craft on Van Cortlandt Park’s ecologically diverse grounds, and these walks celebrate the tradition set by them. Participants will look for resident and migrant species and discuss a wide range of avian topics. No registration necessary. No limit. Free. When birding on your own, check the Nature Sightings log in front of the Nature Center before you head out. At the end of walks, please add your sightings to the log, so others may be aware of recent nature happenings in the park.

Bring binoculars if you have them and wear sturdy shoes!
