NYC Parks and Bike New York are proud to present Learn to Ride classes. In these free classes, we’ll teach children the fundamentals of bicycling, preparing them for years of safe and confident riding.

This class teaches a safe, easy, effective way to learn to ride. Using this “balance first” method, parents help get their children rolling while the child does most of the work. Participants learn the basics of balancing, starting, stopping, and steering a bike. Most people learn to ride their bike while taking the class, but even if they don’t, they will leave with an easy, hands-free, crash-free, and low-stress way to learn to ride.

Participants must bring their own bike and helmet. To register, please visit the Bike New York webpage.

Join this interactive ceramic and mosaic workshop inspired by the natural beauty of the Greenbelt. Under the direction of Janice Patrignani, visitors will be invited to create with clay, and the resulting low relief sculptures will then be fired, glazed and assembled along with mosaic glass into a dynamic community-made mural installation. As the project travels from place to place, new community made sculptures will be created & previously made pieces, once fired & glazed, will be added. Participants will also have the opportunity to add mosaic glass elements to the work in progress, as well as to pinch & coil the clay into shapes such as plants, flowers or insects. The mural in its entirety will be displayed at the SI Children’s Museum in November of 2015. This project is make possible in part by a DCA Art Fund Grant from Staten Island Arts with public funding from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. Registration encouraged.

Join a curatorial fellow for an exhibition tour designed to draw visitors into a lively discussion about the relationship between art and nature. In the main gallery, Chris Doyle: Landscape Fictions brings to life the Hudson River. An artist whose sense of craft verges on the obsessive, Doyle presents three animations from a decades-long practice animating the natural world that exists on the urban fringes. This exhibition accompanies The Lightening, a site-specific project installed in the Aquatic Garden that combines mirrored surfaces with backlit animations into an artwork that changes as the day turns into night. At the same time, in the Sunroom Project Space, Kiran Chandra explores the “swarm” as a social form through a sculptural and sonic interpretation of Eugene Marais’ The Soul of the White Ant. MJM’s Awesome Asana is part of Chelsea’s “Localize Yoga” project, which aims to make yoga affordable and accessible – to present it “as a possibility, rather than as a luxury” – to the denizens of upper Manhattan. The class is $5, and mats, should you need one, are provided.
