East New York community gardeners welcome you to see their rich world. You'll find a united nations of food production for every taste and style. We'll visit East New York community gardens and learn the history of how these once vacant lots were transformed into vibrant community gardens. Along the way we'll see greenhouses from the inside out, watch bees take flight from their beehives, and understand the construction of chicken coops and composting systems. The tour is in memory of historian and social activist Morgan Powell. We will also be planting a fruit tree in Morgan’s honor.

The tour will be led by Eric-Michael Rodriquez and is a collaboration between GreenThumb, Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation, East New York Farms, GrowNYC, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and the New York Restoration Project.

About Morgan Powell
Morgan Powell was a community researcher and former assistant archivist with the Bronx African American History Project of the African and African American History Department of Fordham University. Powell was a long-time volunteer on numerous environmental projects throughout NYC and former Park Manager to Stuyvesant Cove Park. He was an avid community gardener. In 2014, Morgan partnered with GreenThumb, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Just Food, GrowNYC, East NY Farms, CHLDC, NYRP and other greening institutions to lead a walking tour of community gardens in East NY, Brooklyn.

In addition to the historic open houses, Conference House Park is home to a variety of natural habitats, flora, and fauna. Many are unique only to this area of NYC, including some red clay colored bluffs and northern hackberry forests. Natural Areas Conservancy will offer a guided tour of the park's natural landscape. The 260-acre park landscape has both shaped the man-made built environment and conversely has been shaped by human influences from the Native American Lenape people through the colonial era up to present day through natural area protection, management, and restoration. The tour will begin at the park's visitor center.

Please be prepared with walking shoes and water, if needed. Register here for this free event.

The Natural Areas Conservancy exists to restore and conserve the green and blue spaces of New York City in order to enhance the lives of all New Yorkers.

Starting last year on Alice Austen’s birthday, the Alice Austen House began a project documenting the grounds and waterfront from Austen’s home, Clear Comfort. Each day since then the house, grounds, and activities of the site have been documented, much like Alice Austen did over a hundred years ago. The museum will present an installation of nearly 200 snapshots capturing the daily life of this historic site and invite visitors to participate in the project.

Alice Austen Everyday is on view September 26 – December 30, 2015 and shown in conjunction with the museum’s 30th Anniversary exhibition “Becoming Clear Comfort: History of a Landmark," tracing the history of the house. Recently tagged images will also be on view, presented on an iPad in the gallery. Exhibition s on view during museum hours: Tuesday - Sunday 11:00am-5:00pm.

Be like Alice Austen: Upload images taken during the day to social media using the hashtag #aliceausteneveryday. Not on social media? Email photos with title, date, and name of photographer to info@aliceausten.org to be included in the project.

Cover Photo Contest: Submit a #aliceausteneveryday photo of the house and grounds of Clear Comfort to info@aliceausten.org by November 1, 2015. The selected winner’s photo will be used as the Alice Austen House’s Facebook Cover Photo.

The act of exploring, recording and recounting is central to the artistic practice of many artists. The fall exhibition, Field Notes, brings together three artists—Matthew Friday, David McQueen and Michelle Stuart—whose projects in Glyndor Gallery and on the grounds will encourage visitors to discover connections of their own. The Sunroom Project Space hosts two site-specific installations, both by this year’s Van Lier Visual Artist Fellows: Julian Chams has created tactile, photo-based assemblages of memories, feelings and experiences, seeking to soften our information-laden world; Beatrice Glow’s installation converts the Sun Porch into a retelling of trans-Pacific histories, using sights and scents that reference the spice trade.

Located along the esplanade leading up to the recently opened High Bridge, Oh Sit! 14 Sculptors Consider the Chair is a group exhibition of nine artists’ public artworks. In a frantic world, finding a chair can be almost impossible and settling comfortably into one can be an enormous satisfaction. Sitting in the wrong seat can cause anxiety and an even pain. Exhibiting artists Dan Bergman, Allan Cyprys, Robert Dell, Gregoire Ferland, Esther Grillo, Christina Jorge, Siena Gillann Porta, Herb Rosenberg and Chuck von Schmidt respond imaginatively to the notion of sitting or using a chair. Oh Sit! is framed as an imperative, a command—a way of asking the viewer to look and really consider the concept “chair” both objectively and subjectively.

Join us for a journey back in time to the elite ‘Bond Street area’, home to Astors, Vanderbilts, Delanos — and the Tredwells, who lived in the Merchant’s House. You’ll walk the footsteps of these wealthy mercantile families whose elegant Federal mansions once lined the tranquil cobblestone streets. Our tour passes by iconic landmarks such as the imposing Colonnade Row, the Public Theater, and The Cooper Union, where Lincoln gave his ‘right makes might’ speech. On the bustling Astor Place, imagine the drama of events that led to the Opera House riot of 1849, among the bloodiest in American history. And visit the site of the scandalous 1857 Bond Street murder of Harvey Burdell, one of the City’s still unsolved crimes.

In this workshop we will discuss challenges and advantages of composting through the fall and winter months. We will cover what is needed, including food waste, coffee grounds, fall leaves, water and air - to build a hot compost pile, and discuss how to keep it active through the cold season. Attendees will receive information, handouts and instructions on composting and learn how to cook enough finished compost for spring plantings. Together we will turn and sift the piles in our newly-built, concrete-block compost bin and examine what is interacting, living, and decomposing in the bins and the composition of finished compost. In addition to discussing ways to keep the outdoor compost pile going through the cold, ice, and snow, we will also learn about incorporating indoor methods such as worm or vermi-composting and Bokashi food fermentation in the garden composting system.

Attendees of all physical abilities and hands-off observers are welcome. Please dress appropriately for the weather and work if you intend to get your hands dirty.

Bring your compostables!
