Help water and care for the 110,000+ new street trees that have been planted across New York City! Join the MillionTreesNYC to give trees a little "Tree LC" and stewardship, and help keep New York City green by coming to a free MillionTreesNYC tree care workshop where you will learn:

  • What is MillionTreesNYC?
  • How to identify trees in New York City
  • Benefits trees bring to our city
  • Tree Care - Water! Weed! Mulch! Plant flowers!

Workshops are focused on active tree care, so come ready to get your hands dirty and care for street trees along the sidewalk. Please wear closed-toed shoes and layered clothing that can get dirty. Tree stewardship is similar to gardening work, involving bending and kneeling on the sidewalk. Children are always welcome, and must be accompanied by an adult. All participants will care for trees using small gardening tools and watering buckets. Please dress for light gardening work, wear close-toed shoes, and bring a refillable water bottle. All MillionTreesNYC events are rain or shine.

Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre.

Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is too focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass.

Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre’s Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.

The CityParks PuppetMobile is the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

Urban Park Rangers specialize in interpretation of historic turning points, both natural and manmade, in our city’s long history. The Jeffrey's Hook Lighthouse originated in Sandy Hook, New Jersey. The Coast Guard relocated it to the west side of Manhattan in 1921. The story of the lighthouse in Fort Washington Park was popularized by the children's book The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge by Hildegarde H. Swift with illustrations by Lynd Ward, published in 1942. Join the Urban Park Rangers as we open the doors and allow patrons to enjoy the views and sights on this mostly self-guided tour. During the 12th Brazilian Film Festival of NY, the centenary of Bossa Nova composer Vinicius de Moraes, will be celebrated with a concert at SummerStage in Central Park. Join Toquinho, Vinicius’ friend and partner, as he pays homage to the life and work of the great poet.

Antônio Pecci Filho, better known as Toquinho, is a Brazilian singer, guitarist and composer. Learning guitar at a young age, Toquinho's professional career took off in the 1960s at shows at the famous Paramount Theater in São Paulo. His first big hit was composed in 1970 with Jorge Ben Jor, "Que Maravilha" (What a Wonder), and that same year he was invited by Vinicius de Moraes, co-writer of the worldwide hit song "Garota de Ipanema" (The Girl from Ipanema), to participate in a series of shows in Buenos Aires, forming a solid partnership that would continue for 11 years and produce 120 songs, 25 records and over a thousand shows. After the death of Vinicius de Moraes in 1980, Toquinho went on to pursue a solo career, often performing with other talented musicians like Paulinho da Viola, João Bosco, MPB4, Paulinho Nogueira and Chico Buarque. Toquinho continues to record albums and play his music around the world. He is still very acclaimed in Brazil and Italy.”

Born in New York City in 1990, Gaspar Muniz moved to Rio de Janeiro at an early age. His parents, the multi-media artist Maria Mattos and the photographer Vik Muniz, fostered an intensely artistic home environment exposing Gaspar to friendships not only to artists but also to musicians such as Bebel Gilberto, Marisa Monte and Seu Jorge. These icons of Brazilian music have always encouraged him to become a musician due to his natural but still unexplored talent and his endless curiosity about the subject. Since 10 years old and throughout his teens, the young and outgoing Gaspar solidified his love and addiction to music and started to DJ at events and house parties. At the age of 19, Gaspar decided to move back to New York to study advertising and continue his Career as a “digital musician.” Never attached to a specific genre, DJ Gaspar Muniz uses his cultural diversity and knowledge in his sets by mixing a variety of music styles from different places and eras. Now at 23 years old, Gaspar Muniz is gradually becoming a household name in the underground music scene in New York City.

A rousing triple bill that celebrates the many sounds of Louisiana. New Orleans’ The Soul Rebels, have been called “the missing link between Public Enemy and Louis Armstrong." (Village Voice) Strong words, but well deserved by this powerhouse eight-piece ensemble, cooked up by its founders Derrick Moss and Lumar LeBlanc to play the radio hits they loved in the classic brass band tradition they grew up on.

Jon Cleary is another Crescent City dreamer made good. The UK-born pianist has been living in and soaking up the musical legacy of NoLa for decades, and his current band is a mainstay at Jazz Fest and legendary venues like Tipitina’s and the Maple Leaf Bar. “Cleary can be an absolute monster on his own,” writes David Fricke of Rolling Stone, “but Cleary’s full combo R&B is as broad, deep and roiling as the Mississippi river, the combined swinging product of local keyboard tradition, Cleary’s vocal-songwriting flair for moody Seventies soul and the spunky-meters roll of his Gentlemen.”

Rounding it out are the incredible Lost Bayou Ramblers, from Lafayette, bringing a modern edge to traditional Cajun music. Their blazing brand of foot-stomping zydeco landed them an opening spot on this spring’s Arcade Fire tour.

Hamish Linklater and Tony® nominee Lily Rabe return to the Park this summer as the wise-cracking, would-be lovers Beatrice and Benedick in the beloved romantic comedy Much Ado About Nothing. Central Park becomes sun-drenched Sicily at the turn of the last century, where the heat of summer ignites the fevered passions of lovesick ladies in corsets and pining gentlemen spying from the verandah. Three-time Tony winner Jack O’Brien directs this delightful skirmish of wit between two self-declared bachelors tricked by their mischief-making friends into falling in love against their will and in spite of their own hearts.

New York's most treasured summer tradition, Free Shakespeare in the Park, celebrates its 52nd season in Central Park's famous Delacorte Theater. Love and madness, laughter and tragedy combine for a uniquely thrilling season of exciting theater and exceptional performances under the stars. Join over 5 million people who have enjoyed The Public Theater's free performances and experience the heights of romance and the depths of duplicity in a setting unlike any other, in the heart of Manhattan.

Free tickets to the 2014 season will once again be distributed in the Park, online via the Virtual Ticketing Lottery, and in the five boroughs of New York City. For more info on getting tickets, visit the Shakespeare in the Park tickets page.

Ice-age glaciers, Native Americans, Dutch traders, British Redcoats, and the Underground Railroad have all left their mark on New York City. Their stories can be found in the names of our streets, our architecture, and our parks. Urban Park Rangers specialize in interpretation of historic turning points, both natural and man-made, in our city’s long history.

This historic walking tour will focus on the General Slocum disaster. On the morning of June 15, 1904, the steamboat General Slocum caught fire in the East River with approximately 1,300 people on board, including many children. In the course of 20 minutes an estimated 1,021 people died. It was the deadliest disaster at that time. Hear the full story about the General Slocum and learn the outcomes it had for the future of boating safety. Astoria Park also allows visitors to experience a unique view of the East River.

Wayfinding: 100 NYC Public Sculptures is a site-specific project that invites the public to embark on guided journeys through NYC to find public sculptures. Phunsombatlert researched all existing public sculptures in New York City and identified 100 sites to be incorporated in his final work. He then created small drawings of each sculpture and developed directional signs and maps that resemble standard U.S. National Park Service signage. The artwork is made up of signage for 100 public sculptures that contain distances drawn from GPS coordinates between each sculpture and the group of wooden posts outside of the Queens Museum at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.

The audience experiences their own journey to each original sculpture. However, whether visitors view the original sculptures or their drawn representational counterparts, this project calls attention to the very specific, transformative space between object and audience. The exhibition questions how the audience’s journey from the sign to original artwork can be a work of art in itself. Visitors are invited to see the online map at www.wayfindingNYC.com. Wayfinding: 100 NYC Public Sculptures is an exciting and rare instance where NYC Parks’ temporary public art program will merge with and inform the permanent sculptures in New York City’s collection.

Closely Knit: A Textile Analysis of Animals by Ruth Marshall brings attention to illegal wildlife trade and species loss in a way that unites a widened audience of scientists, art enthusiasts and the general public. Her life-size, knitted textile pelts of tigers, leopards, coral snakes and Australian marsupials exemplify how artisan goods have the potential to have higher commercial value than poached skins on the black market. Her textiles reinforce the ideology that support for conservation and culture is a more sustainable, viable and lucrative endeavor than the illegal wildlife trade.

She has conducted research at the American Museum of Natural History, Melbourne Museum and the Berlin Zoo. For Closely Knit, Marshall studied Askai, Central Park Zoo’s six-year-old male snow leopard and created a new knitted work based on his distinctive coat. The exhibition is staged in the historic Arsenal building, which housed a menagerie of gifted animals on the basement level from 1859 to 1871, and was the first home of the American Museum of Natural History from 1869 to 1877 before it moved to its current home on Manhattan’s West Side.
