The signature annual event at Freshkills Park, Sneak 'Peak' is a festival unlike any other. The site is normally closed throughout the year as we continue park development and construction, but once a year we throw open the gates and hold a celebration! Join us to celebrate the potential of the future of Freshkills Park with a day of fun with activities like kayaking, biking, birding, public art, puppetry workshop, walking tours, climbing walls, an informational fair, and kite flying, all of which offer a glimpse of what the park will have to offer. Last year 3,500 people joined us for the celebration of Staten Island's newest jewel of parkland - this year promises to be bigger and better than ever!

Visit the Freshkills Park Alliance's Sneak Peak page to find out more! Parking for the festival will be available at 250 Wild Avenue, behind the Showplace Bowling Alley off of Victory Blvd. Free shuttles will run to the festival from the Staten Island Ferry, just hop off the ferry and on to a direct shuttle right to the celebration without any hassle! Alternatively, the S62 bus runs down Victory Blvd. to the park.

This event is organized by the Freshkills Park Alliance, Department of Sanitation, Staten Island Recreation, Kayak Staten Island, Staten Island Museum, Staten Island Arts.

Please join us for the 30th annual Medieval Festival on September 28th, 2014 from 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Fort Tryon Park.

This festival brings to life the customs and spirit of the Middle Ages. Fort Tryon Park is transformed into a medieval market town decorated with bright banners and processional flags. Performers, guests and festival goers dress in medieval costume. Visitors are greeted by authentic period music, dance, magic, and minstrels, as well as jugglers and jesters. The afternoon is concluded with a thrilling joust between four knights on horseback. Costumed vendors will be on hand to demonstrate and sell a wide variety of medieval crafts as well as food and drink. Experience the culture of a bygone era against the backdrop of the Cloisters museum and the Hudson River during autumn's peak. We invite all ages to join us for this unique experience.

The festival is held in the area surrounding the world famous Cloisters, a magnificent museum of medieval art located in northern Manhattan.

The event is free but Medieval crafts, clothing, etc. and food will be available for purchase.

Most areas are wheelchair accessible however, persons with mobility issues may experience difficulty maneuvering on lawn areas.

This event is co-sponsored by Washington Heights and Inwood Development Corporation.

Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

Taxonomy is a collection of George Boorujy’s dynamic large-scale paintings of North American animals with disarmingly human characteristics, as well as a series of his preliminary clay models and drawings. Inhabitants of New York City and other urban centers often think of themselves as removed from nature, but Boorujy’s hyperrealistic ink-on-paper portraits force us to rethink our relationship with animals and our own place within the environment.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

CityParks Seniors Fitness presented by Airbnb is generously supported by Zwicker Electric; NYC Council under the leadership of Melissa Mark-Viverito; Manhattan Delegation of the NYC Council; NYC Council Member Julissa Ferreras; NYC Council Member Ben Kallos; NYC Council Member Helen Rosenthal; NYC Council Member Annabel Palma; and NYC Council Member Laurie Cumbo, in cooperation with NYC Parks. City Parks Foundation’s Sports & Fitness Programs offer free expert instruction to over 15,000 New York youth and seniors at over 60 locations citywide.

Founded in August of 2008 and based in San Francisco, California, Airbnb is a trusted community marketplace for people to list, discover, and book unique accommodations around the world – online or from a mobile phone. Whether an apartment for a night, a castle for a week, or a villa for a month, Airbnb connects people to unique travel experiences at any price point, in more than 34,000 cities and 190 countries. And with world-class customer service and a growing community of users, Airbnb is the easiest way for people to monetize their extra space and showcase it to an audience of millions.

Founded in 1989, City Parks Foundation (CPF) is the only independent, nonprofit organization to offer park programs throughout the five boroughs of New York City. CPF works in over 750 parks citywide, presenting a broad range of free arts, sports, and education programs, and empowering citizens to support their parks on a local level.

Ever wonder what you’re looking at when you look up at the beautiful night sky? Often, some of the brightest objects in our night sky aren’t stars at all, but planets. Come preview the film Women in Space*, and hear Jaclyn Avidon, Chair of the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York’s Education and Educational Outreach Committees, talk about what planets are currently visible in the sky. Join us for some breathtaking views of those planets and stars from the roof. Guests are welcome to bring their own binoculars and telescopes and set them up alongside the experts.

*Women in Space is part of Community Cinema’s new series, MAKERS, a six-part PBS series profiling the impact women have had over
the past 50 years in comedy, politics, space, war, business, and Hollywood.

Film screening from 7:30-8:30 p.m. followed by a lecture from 8:30-9:00 p.m., followed by a sky viewing 9:00-10:00 p.m.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels. Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees.
