This week, get ready to hiss, rattle and make a splash as we read stories about our scaly friends, the reptiles. Our fun movement pieces and counting rhymes will bring everyone out of their shells.

Stories this week: Baby Rattlesnake by Viborita de Cascabel, Turtle Splash by Cathryn Falwell and Mossy by Jan Brett. Programs are held outdoors in good weather; in Wave Hill House in inclement weather. Ideal for children ages three to six with an adult. Free with admission to the grounds.

Jessica Carvo

New York City based songwriter and singer Jessica Carvo has performed in several major venues, with highlights including Jimmy Kimmel’s Live Outdoor Stage in Los Angeles, World Cafe Live in Philadelphia, The Venetian Showroom in Las Vegas, the New York Mets’ Citi Field, the Philadelphia 76ers’ Wells Fargo Center and the Philadelphia Phillies’ Citizens Bank Park. Jessica performs throughout the New York metropolitan area on a routine basis both as a solo act and with the band, “Pictures of the Sun.” Jessica will be bringing the soothing sounds of Jazz, Folk, Country, and Pop to this local community garden.

Akie Bermiss Trio

Brooklyn-bred singer, keyboardist, and composer Akie Bermiss possesses a soulful voice that packs an emotional wallop. A staple of Brooklyn’s neo-soul scene, he performs with numerous local outfits, including Aabaraki, the Screaming Headless Torsos, hip-hop violinist Miri Ben-Ari, and rapper Soul Khan, and has opened for George Clinton. Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form that has evolved over centuries into an exciting combination of martial arts, dance, music, and acrobatics. Some of capoeira’s benefits include strength, flexibility, stamina, overall fitness and confidence. Benefits of capoeira for kids include promoting social interaction and sense of belonging, building confidence, discipline and self esteem, promoting a healthy lifestyle so children become active, and healthy, and develop cultural awareness and tolerance. Wear comfortable clothing.

Capoeira was developed in Brazil, but its history extends to Africa and tribes from Angola. Slaves living on Brazilian Plantations who weren’t allowed to openly practice traditional forms of self-defense developed an ingenious method of disguising their training by combining it with dance-like movements, singing, and the rhythms of primitive instruments.

Once a free and open society, Vienna is bitterly divided between high morals and the greed of commerce. Disguised as a monk, the duke wanders the land, prying into the daily lives of his subjects. When his deputy sentences Claudio to death, the virtue and purity of his sister, Isabella, is the price she must pay to save her brother’s life. Measure for Measure is directed by artistic director Stephen Burdman.

Dissensions can take many forms: a soon-to-be-divorced couple bickering; a brood of misfit animals squabbling; an all-female band debating the very definition of their feminism. With unfailing shrewdness, the following shorts depict various clashes and the intense relationships that trigger them. Sharing a penchant for naturalism and distaste for gender binaries, these clever films are further proof of Swedish cinema’s incredible vitality.

Short Films

  • "I Turn to You", 2015, 15 minutes, directed by Victor Lindgren.
  • "Bath House", 2014, 15 minutes, directed by Niki Lindroth von Bahr.
  • "Pussy Have the Power", 2014, 14 minutes, directed by Lovisa Sirén.

Additional shorts to be added. Please note: Due to graphic language, this evening is not recommended for children.

Programmed by Rooftop Films. There will be pre-screening performances at 7 p.m.; films begins at sundown.

Pack a picnic, bring a friend and settle in for a night of premier movies on the pier. In this film, a pair of young lovers flee their New England town, which causes a local search party to fan out to find them.

The film will begin when it is dark enough to see the image on the screen which is dependent on the sunset, generally around 8:30pm. Seating will open at 6:30, and is first come first serve and people can reserve chairs for their friends once onsite. We put out chairs (about 250 of them) and they normally fill by 7:30 and ground seating is available in front and behind the chair section. Front ground seating is for blankets/butts on ground (the pier is hard made of pavers) & picnics are welcome if trash is disposed of properly. Dogs are welcome on leash and off chairs. People may bring their own chairs and place them behind our chairs on the dark pavers, if they choose to bring them. There is no seating or standing in the Southern aisle of the pier. @summeronhudson for weather updates

Located along the esplanade leading up to the recently opened High Bridge, Oh Sit! 14 Sculptors Consider the Chair is a group exhibition of nine artists’ public artworks. In a frantic world, finding a chair can be almost impossible and settling comfortably into one can be an enormous satisfaction. Sitting in the wrong seat can cause anxiety and an even pain. Exhibiting artists Dan Bergman, Allan Cyprys, Robert Dell, Gregoire Ferland, Esther Grillo, Christina Jorge, Siena Gillann Porta, Herb Rosenberg and Chuck von Schmidt respond imaginatively to the notion of sitting or using a chair. Oh Sit! is framed as an imperative, a command—a way of asking the viewer to look and really consider the concept “chair” both objectively and subjectively.

The relaxation technique, somewhat like yoga, makes you feel as though you are floating on water.

You may experience yourself drifting in and out of sleep during the gentle and quiet sessions. You will gain a deeper sense of well-being and relaxation, with a better understanding of your body and how it feels. If you suffer migraines or back or neck pain, the instructor will advice you on the specific technique to alleviate the area of concern.

Mats and materials are provided. Come in loose and comfortable pants and clothing. Most people remove their shoes.

Get ready to have an amazing experience. This is a very popular class.

As one of the last black string bands in the U.S.—currently based in the concrete hills of NYC—the Hillbillies keep an important legacy alive with a rootsy, homegrown style that many forget was a key element in the genesis of all the music we cherish as uniquely American—jazz, blues, bluegrass, rockabilly, rock and roll and country. Bringing a fresh urgency to the genre for a 21st Century world in need of some deep musical education, the ensemble led by Henrique Prince (fiddle, vocals) and Norris Bennett (banjo, mountain dulcimer, guitar, vocals)-- featuring Gloria Thomas Gassaway on vocals and bones, William “Salty Bill” Salter on acoustic bass with A.R. and Newman Taylor Baker on washboard and percussion--creates an untamed and joyful vibe that echoes across the generations and transcends all racial and cultural boundaries.
