The year 1619 marked the beginning of the slave trade in the Thirteen Colonies, but the first African American elected to office in the United States of America has been documented as early as 1768.

Despite slavery, prejudice and Jim Crow laws, America has seen numerous influential African American leaders who shaped the social, legal, and justice systems. Artists in this exhibition offer broad interpretations on the theme of African Americans in public service. America: The Legacy of African American Public Service celebrates noted government officials, as well as activists and members of the public who dedicated their lives to the greater good of the people.

This exhibition is presented by NYC Parks Ebony Society.

Each winter, Wave Hill opens Glyndor Gallery as workspace for New York-area artists, giving them the unique opportunity to explore the winter landscape as a source of inspiration. Artists share aspects of their practice and engagement with Wave Hill through hands-on workshops. Workshops begin in Glyndor Gallery with an introduction to the artist’s work, then continue in the Ecology Building or Wave Hill House for the creative activity.

Sarah Zapata plans to continue sewing arpilleras (wall hangings traditionally made by women) to address savage abuses of human rights in Peru and Chile during times of guerilla occupation. Using fibers and native grasses, participants fabricate wearable or decorative baskets while exploring traditional, as well as modern, South American cultures. Follow her research trail primarily from the archives in Barbados to the Bronx and be inspired to investigate your own family story. Bronx County Historical Society (BCHS) Educator Angel Hernandez will also share tips on genealogical resources available at Bronx Co. Historical Society, particularly those important for researching the stories of African American families in the Bronx.

About Andrea Butler Ramsey
Ms. Andrea Butler Ramsey has spent most of her lifetime as a Bronx resident. She attributes stories told to her by her maternal grandmother, from the island of Barbados, as her inspiration and what peaked her interest in family history and genealogy. She is a member of the National Chapter of the Afro-American Historical Genealogical Society (AAHGS) and the local Jean-Sampson - Scott Greater New York Chapter. She served as the chairperson of the AAHGS-NY Caribbean Committee and is a member of the Writers Group.

During the Winter Workspace, Ezra Wube will make a stop-motion, animation short based on studies of Wave Hill’s plants, insects and animals, looking at how they respond to their surroundings. Today, absorb the wintry Wave Hill landscape. Then use your observations, as well as found objects and paint, to create a short, stop-motion, animation film.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” The installation consists of previously and newly acquired works, all from the original Gracie Mansion period, which have been curated to create a more historically accurate picture of life in New York City during the time of Gracie Mansion’s construction.

Open Run is a new community-based initiative that launched in St. Mary's Park in the Bronx on National Running Day, June 3, 2015. Through this initiative, New York Road Runners is empowering local volunteers to bring free weekly runs to local neighborhood parks all over NYC.

All runs are directed by volunteers and are free to all participants. The finish line is open until the last person is done. The courses vary based on park, but they are between 2.5-3 miles. Participants are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes before the start of the run and to leave their valuables at home – bag check is not provided. No need to do anything before the run, just show up. Open to all ages, experience levels, walkers, strollers, dogs: All are welcome!

This program is in coordination with NYC Parks' Community Parks Initiative.
