NYC Parks and Bike New York are proud to present Learn to Ride classes. In these free classes, we’ll teach children the fundamentals of bicycling, preparing them for years of safe and confident riding.

This class teaches a safe, easy, effective way to learn to ride. Using this “balance first” method, parents help get their children rolling while the child does most of the work. Participants learn the basics of balancing, starting, stopping, and steering a bike. Most people learn to ride their bike while taking the class, but even if they don’t, they will leave with an easy, hands-free, crash-free, and low-stress way to learn to ride.

Participants must bring their own bike and helmet. To register, please visit the Bike New York webpage.

The Merchant’s House Museum’s original Greek Revival decorative plasterwork is considered by many to be the most important extant in a pre-Civil War residential interior in the United States. Its survival is now jeopardized by two major construction projects on East Fourth Street. Plaster restoration expert David Flaharty, who initially repaired portions of the Museum’s plaster in a major 1970s stabilization, will lead a unique “behind the ropes” tour and fascinating exploration of this outstanding 19th century craftsmanship. Flaharty will also discuss and demonstrate DIY decorative plaster techniques to create your own Merchant’s House.

David Flaharty, sculptor and ornamental plasterer, has worked on the restoration and new construction of ornamental plasterwork in the American Wing of the Metropolitan Museum, the Diplomatic Reception Rooms at the U.S. Department of State, and The White House. He has been involved in the preservation and restoration of the Merchant’s House for almost 40 years.

Much is known, or, at least, said about Eliza Jumel, 60-year mistress of Morris-Jumel Mansion. But what of Stephen, Eliza's first husband and founder of the Jumel family fortune? In her illustrated lecture "Stephen Jumel: The Making of a Merchant," historian Margaret Oppenheimer fills in the gaps, revealing details of Stephen's life previously unknown and giving us a portrait of not only a singular man, but also an entire class: the 18th- and 19th-century merchant. The lecture is free with museum admission, though advanced registration is recommended. Call (212) 923-8008 or email marketing@morrisjumel.org to reserve.

Limited Partnership: A film by Thomas Miller & Kirk Marcolina

Decades before The Defense of Marriage Act and Proposition 8, one gay couple, a Filipino American and an Australian, fell in love. Over the course of 40 years, they took on the U.S. government to fight for marriage and immigration equality.

After the screening, Gary Rozman, NYC Parks, will lead a discussion. Gary has worked in several capacities at Parks for nearly 15 years, including Urban Park Ranger, and Director of Operations for the Arsenal, the agency headquarters building in Central Park. He currently helps run the Parks Academy in Flushing Meadows. Gary also serves as president of the Whitman Society, the LGBT employees’ association named after the great, gay poet, naturalist, and New Yorker. Off duty, he is a registered wedding officiant and performed some of the first same-sex marriage ceremonies in New York City. He lives with his husband of two years and their basset hound, Rufus, in Queens.

This season, Community Cinema celebrates 10 years of uniting people through independent film. Community Cinema presents free screenings and discussions around the Emmy Award-winning PBS documentary series Independent Lens. By igniting conversations around issues that affect us all, Community Cinema creates real and lasting change - both at home and around the world.

In the main gallery, Chris Doyle: Landscape Fictions brings to life the Hudson River. An artist whose sense of craft verges on the obsessive, Doyle presents three animations from a decades-long practice animating the natural world that exists on the urban fringes. This exhibition accompanies The Lightening, a site-specific project installed in the Aquatic Garden that combines mirrored surfaces with backlit animations into an artwork that changes as the day turns into night. At the same time, in the Sunroom Project Space, Kiran Chandra explores the “swarm” as a social form through a sculptural and sonic interpretation of Eugene Marais’ The Soul of the White Ant. Our Catalyst program will be launching Catalyst’s new round with a celebration for the East Harlem community. Catalyst builds excitement around parks and waterfronts, connects parks to community priorities, and sustains local leadership for strong park communities. The program will bring intensive support over the next four years to East Harlem, as well as Kaiser Park in Brooklyn, and Faber Park in Staten Island. To kick it all off, we will be hosting a community festival at Thomas Jefferson Park.

Join us as the Catalyst Festival brings live music, arts and crafts, face-painting, and many activities offered by Partnerships for Parks, City Parks Foundation, GreenThumb, New York Restoration Project, and Randalls Island Sports Foundation. There will also be the City Parks Foundation Puppet Show "Brier Rabbit" that will start at 2:30 p.m.

Let’s bring the community together for a great cause and celebrate these exciting changes coming to these areas.

Throughout five weekends in April and May PIP committee members, New York Junior League volunteers, and external volunteers will spend a day in the park (8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.) gardening, landscaping, painting, and completing other tasks to help spruce up this highly used space. We will provide you with breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt. Please reach out to playground@nyjl.org with any questions or if you are interested in making a donation to this cause.

Please RSVP if you are interested in participating in one or more park days. Registration closes when capacity is reached or the Wednesday prior to that weekend's park days.

About the New York Junior League Playground Improvement Project

For more than 20 years, the Playground Improvement Project (PIP) has been a New York Junior League signature community project. Our volunteers create safe, beautiful, well-organized and educational play spaces for children and other members of the New York City community. PIP focuses on sites and parks that need major renovation and have the greatest impact on the surrounding community. Weekend clean up days include landscaping and repairing the parks. We work with over 700 volunteers a season to help improve the park and make a positive impact on the community.

Bicycle Basics is a free three hour bike class for adults and mature teens who have recently learned how to ride a bike or who want to improve their core cycling skills. You’ll learn how to adjust your helmet for a safe, comfortable fit, choose an appropriately sized bike, adjust the seat, perform a simple mechanical inspection to ensure the bike is road-ready, start & stop with confidence, shift gears, scan & signal, and navigate around common road hazards. Kids must bring a bike & a helmet; adults can borrow ours.

Witness firsthand how the Conservancy's work has made the Park a sanctuary for these birds. Binoculars can be borrowed from the Dana Discovery Center.

Marvel at the beautiful protective shell of the turtle. Use fabric and leather scraps to design and decorate a stuffed, wearable turtle-shell backpack of your own. Then wearing our shells, we’ll gather outside, and, moving at a turtle’s pace, we’ll waltz in an oh-so-slow parade. Free with admission to the grounds.
