Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre.

Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is too focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass.

Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre’s Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.

The CityParks PuppetMobile is the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

A book talk with the author, Susan Herrington, and subject, Cornelia Hahn Oberlander

Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, has been instrumental in the development of the late, twentieth-century landscape design ethic, one that is truly modern – and audaciously abstract.

Both the author, Susan Herrington, and Ms. Oberlander will be in New York for a short presentation and reading to be followed by questions and answers, and a book signing. The book will be available for sale at the event.

Born in 1921, Oberlander fled Nazi Germany at the age of eighteen, going on to become one of the few women to graduate from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. For six decades she has practiced socially responsible and ecologically sensitive planning for public landscapes, including Robson Square and its adjoining Provincial Law Courts—one of Vancouver’s most famous spaces.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels. Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

Closely Knit: A Textile Analysis of Animals by Ruth Marshall brings attention to illegal wildlife trade and species loss in a way that unites a widened audience of scientists, art enthusiasts and the general public. Her life-size, knitted textile pelts of tigers, leopards, coral snakes and Australian marsupials exemplify how artisan goods have the potential to have higher commercial value than poached skins on the black market. Her textiles reinforce the ideology that support for conservation and culture is a more sustainable, viable and lucrative endeavor than the illegal wildlife trade.

She has conducted research at the American Museum of Natural History, Melbourne Museum and the Berlin Zoo. For Closely Knit, Marshall studied Askai, Central Park Zoo’s six-year-old male snow leopard and created a new knitted work based on his distinctive coat. The exhibition is staged in the historic Arsenal building, which housed a menagerie of gifted animals on the basement level from 1859 to 1871, and was the first home of the American Museum of Natural History from 1869 to 1877 before it moved to its current home on Manhattan’s West Side.
