Did you know that the north end of Central Park has a rich history that includes the British having been stationed here during the American Revolution, and American troops stationed there during the War of 1812? Recent archaeological and historical investigations in the area have revealed even more information about how the "Fort Landscape" was used in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, before this area was part of Central Park. This season, join our guides and learn the history of this part of the Park, get insight into the studies in the area, and appreciate the recent restorations undertaken by the Conservancy.

Highlights of this tour include McGowan's Pass, Fort Clinton, Nutter's Battery, and the Harlem Meer.

The tour route involves many hills and stairs, and some uneven terrain. The tour starts at Charles A. Dana Discovery Center (inside the park at 110th Street between Fifth and Lenox Avenues), and ends near the park perimeter at 106th Street and Fifth Avenue.

For weather cancellation and other ticket policies, please review the Central Park Conservancy's policies carefully.

FLUX Public Art Projects, a FLUX Art Fair initiative, features over 40 public art installations for its second annual show. The fair will take place from May 3 through May 31, in several locations throughout Harlem’s parks and boulevards. The only contemporary art fair mounted in the neighborhood, FLUX embodies Harlem’s creative spirit and cultural significance by bringing together original works from large sculptural works to sound pieces, performance art and thought-provoking installations in rocks, fences and light-poles by over 40 innovative artists.

In Marcus Garvey Park, the Classical Theatre of Harlem will perform fight scenes from their summer 2016 production of Macbeth. Jose Rodriguez will perform Pennies From Heaven, an improvised live performance and symbolic offering of a penny mosaic. Aya Rodriguez-Izumi will also perform Temple, a one-on-one intervention based on divination practices from various cultures. The public is also invited to join artist Nancy Rakoczy in weaving the Liberian Flag. Visitors are encouraged to bring clean used plastic bags and tablecloths for this project.

Join Wave Hill’s Curatorial Fellow for a tour of current exhibitions.

In the main gallery, (Not So) Still Life presents novel ways that contemporary artists are transforming the still-life genre to engage with current culture. As a subject, the still life has remained popular since the early Renaissance, featuring compositions of natural and inanimate objects often presented with allegorical connotations. Today, artists are creating new variations by working in photography and sculpture to conflate interior space with landscape, or by using video and animation to convey still life in motion. Artists include Adam Brent, Elizabeth Bryant, Nicole Cohen, Ori Gersht, Jessica Jackson Hutchins, Sue Johnson, Laura Letinsky, Beth Lipman, Erin O’Keefe,Donna Sharrett, Nicolas Touron, Michael Vahrenwald, Rodrigo Valenzuela and Alex Verhaest. In the Sunroom Project Space, Tai Hwa Goh explores the controlled natural environment of greenhouses, contemplating the intersection of the organic and the human-made realms.

Bring a chair or blanket and join us! The movie begins at dusk.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

Both a classic movie for kids and a remarkable portrait of childhood, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is a sci-fi adventure that captures that strange moment in youth when the world is a place of mysterious possibilities (some wonderful, some awful), and the universe seems somehow separate from the one inhabited by grown-ups. Henry Thomas plays Elliott, a young boy living with his single mother (Dee Wallace), his older brother Michael (Robert MacNaughton), and his younger sister Gertie (Drew Barrymore). Elliott often seems lonely and out of sorts, lost in his own world. One day, while looking for something in the back yard, he senses something mysterious in the woods watching him. And he's right: an alien spacecraft on a scientific mission mistakenly left behind an aging botanist who isn't sure how to get home. Eventually Elliott puts his fears aside and makes contact with the "little squashy guy," perhaps the least threatening alien invader ever to hit a movie screen. As Elliott tries to keep the alien under wraps and help him figure out a way to get home, he discovers that the creature can communicate with him telepathically. Soon they begin to learn from each other, and Elliott becomes braver and less threatened by life. E.T. rigs up a communication device from junk he finds around the house, but no one knows if he'll be rescued before a group of government scientists gets hold of him.

The experienced boatbuilders of the Village Community Boathouse will lead volunteers in constructing a 14-foot-long Whitehall rowboat in Brooklyn Bridge Park's Community Room at 99 Plymouth. Named after the Lower Manhattan street that now ends at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, Whitehalls were the water taxis of their day, speedily ferrying passengers across the East River and to and from ships at anchor in the harbor. The shape and dimensions of this boat are drawn from a Whitehall built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1890.

Regular boatbuilding sessions will take place on Mondays and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to noon until May 22. Spectators are more than welcome and volunteers are encouraged to join. No experience is necessary.

Join Wave Hill’s Curatorial Fellow for a tour of current exhibitions.

In the main gallery, (Not So) Still Life presents novel ways that contemporary artists are transforming the still life genre to engage with current culture.

This tour is free with admission to the grounds.
