Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

Hiking is the ultimate way to enjoy the outdoors and reduce stress. Regardless of the intensity level, it is a great way to burn calories and stay fit.

On Nature exploration hikes we will discover the plants and animals that inhabit the urban forest. Hiking programs feature intensity levels ranging from light (leisurely stroll on mostly paved paths), to moderate (longer, faster paced hikes on rugged terrain), to vigorous (long distance, with hills and rugged terrain).

For all hiking programs we recommend wearing comfortable shoes or boots, and packing water and a light snack.

Seven historic sites in Queens invite you to celebrate the holiday season and learn about these NYC Landmark houses and their unique histories. The Kingsland Homestead, Voelker Orth House, Lewis H. Latimer House Museum, Friends Meeting House, Flushing Town Hall, the Bowne House, and the Louis Armstrong House Museum will each offer special activities, delicious refreshments, and a glimpse at what life was once like during the holidays at this fun-filled annual event. See the descriptions below to find out what's happening at each of the historic sites this year!

How it works:

You may begin at any of the participating sites; most of the sites are within a short walking distance of each other, however transportation will be provided if needed. Visit as few or as many as you'd like!

Please note: One van will only be running between Louis Armstrong House and Flushing Town Hall, the other will run continuously to the other sites.

Kingsland Homestead: Built c. 1785, Kingsland was occupied by five generations of the same family until the 1930s. In 1968, the house was moved from its original Flushing site to its current location. Home of the Queens Historical Society, we offer school programs, tours, & lectures to the public documenting the history of Queens. Join us for musical performances throughout the day, refreshments and a special holiday gift shop sale of local history books.

Voelker Orth Museum, Bird Sancturary & Victorian Garden: This house dates back to 1891. Purchased by an immigrant who published German-language newspapers, it was home to three generations of one Queens family. A special holiday make & take craft will be available for guests to join in on the fun!

Lewis H. Latimer House Museum: The house was constructed from 1887 to1889. Home of African-American inventor Lewis H. Latimer, he lived in this house from 1903 until his death in 1928. The son of fugitive slaves, he played a vital role in the development of the telephone and the Incandescent light bulb. Join us for house tours, holiday refreshments and a glass painting demonstration by one of our educators (free with Holiday House Tour admission).

The Friends Meeting House: This is the first house of worship in the village of Flushing and NYC's oldest structure in continuous use for religious purposes. It was built in 1694. The house will be open for tours all day - be sure to walk around the property and view the historic cemetery.

Flushing Town Hall: Built in 1862, it served as the cultural and political focal point of the village of Flushing. The building features a rich history that includes visits by dignitaries such as PT Barnum and Tom Thumb, operas, murder trials and even a jail cell. Frederick Douglass once spoke to the community from the portico. Now a performing and visual arts space, it is home to the Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts. Visitors can get some holiday shopping done at our Holiday Market with local fine-craft artisans selling thier wares!

The Bowne House: Built in 1661 by John Bowne, it is known for its connection to the principle of freedom of conscience in America. Bowne House, a city, state, and national landmark, was lived in by nine generations of the family. Though the museum has been closed since 1999 and is currently undergoing a $3 million restoration and preservation project, its parlor will be decorated for the holidays and open to visitors! Also, pending completion of the current restoration work, visitors may be treated to a preview of the newly redone kitchen and more of the grounds will be open!

The Louis Armstrong House Museum: Built in 1910, it is a National Historic Landmark and NYC Landmark. Louis Armstrong and his wife Lucille purchased the house in 1943 and it became their permanent home. In keeping with Louis and Lucille's tradition, the house will be brightly decorated for the holidays. This season holiday house tours will feature rare audio clips from Louis's personal recordings. You will hear Louis’s magical voice reading “Twas the Night Before Christmas, A Visit from St. Nicholas,” along with other seasonal recordings.

The future of mankind lies in exploring Mars and other worlds, as well as tourism beyond the earth's gravitational field. How can people prepare for such a flight? How will astronauts prepare for a flight to Mars? Why will all our descendants in the future have to make such a journey?

Wagner College astronomy professor and NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador Harold Kozak, will explore the ways in which humans will not only travel in outer space, but also eventually terraform Mars, as well as other worlds. In addition, he will explain why it will be imperative for our descendants to find other habitable planets in the future. This presentation is geared to ages 7 and up. Free program.

High Line Art presents Pier 54, an exhibition conceived as a tribute to and a reaction against Pier 18, a legendary project organized by artist and curator Willoughby Sharp in 1971. For its original iteration, Sharp invited 27 artists to create an event or an action to take place on the abandoned Pier 18 in the Financial District of New York City. Artists responded in a variety of ways: some carried out performances, others created sculptures and installations or sent simple instructions for do-it-yourself works to be executed by someone else. All the events were photographed by artists Harry Shunk and János Kender, and subsequently exhibited in photographic form at the Museum of Modern Art in the summer of 1971. Among the participants – who, in keeping with a largely gender-biased art world at the time, happened to be all male – were Vito Acconci, John Baldessari, Jan Dibbets, Dan Graham, Gordon Matta-Clark, Mario Merz, Allen Ruppersberg, Richard Serra, William Wegman, and many others.

Both a re-enactment and an exercise in historical revisionism, Pier 54 took place during the summer of 2014 on Hudson River Park’s Pier 54 – a disused pier located at 11th Avenue and West 13th Street. The pier is visible from the High Line and preserves many historical memories and architectural vestiges of Manhattan’s West Side, a neighborhood that has been swiftly transformed in the past decades. High Line Art invited 27 contemporary artists – this time all women – to realize projects that respond to the location and engage with the changing landscape of the waterfront.

This workshop will help you to hone the fundamentals of group structure and basics of by-laws and how to write them so that you have a resource to guide how you work together effectively. While all registered GreenThumb gardens must follow the GreenThumb rules, the by-laws serve as a reference for situations in which there is confusion about how the organization runs or works such as decision-making, membership, etc. All gardens are strongly encouraged to submit by-laws in order to complete their registration and this workshop will serve as an excellent guide for groups in need of assistance getting their by-laws completed.
