Taxonomy is a collection of George Boorujy’s dynamic large-scale paintings of North American animals with disarmingly human characteristics, as well as a series of his preliminary clay models and drawings. Inhabitants of New York City and other urban centers often think of themselves as removed from nature, but Boorujy’s hyperrealistic ink-on-paper portraits force us to rethink our relationship with animals and our own place within the environment.

In what will hopefully be a preview of 2015, we've specially selected our 30 favorite food vendors to put on their best show at a Smorgasburg at SummerStage Central Park for one night only:Friday, September 19, from 5 to 9pm. Stroll into the world's loveliest city park before twilight on a late summer's eve, watch the sunset amongst the tall trees, sip a lovely beer or fine wine, sway to a classy DJ, and munch on the finest munchies in town. It's all so civilized in Central Park, right? Yes, and it's also free.

Some folks aren't aware that the Flea and Smorg have operated the food-and-beverage concession at SummerStage since 2010, where four food vendors set up for all 50+ shows every summer, and we run the bar. Asia Dog, Blue Marble Ice Cream, Lonestar Empire/Best Summer, and Pizza Moto have been holding it down uptown for a few years now, but we figured why not take a stab at throwing a proper Smorg party in such a stellar setting. If tons of you show up and it goes great, maybe we'll do it on the regular next year. Lots of ye olde stalwarts will be there—Mighty Quinn's, Ramen Burger, Cemitas, Lumpia Shack, Milk Truck—plus some new faves: Dan & John's Wings, Carnal (of the giant beef rib), East Coast Poké (Hawaiian ceviche!), El Super (seafood tostadas), and Fleisher's (the grass-fed upstate/Park Slope butcher shop with the mean burgers). Plus Butter & Scotch sweet treats, Brooklyn Soda Works' dee-lish drinks, and of course our trusty beer and wine bar.

Oh, we'll tell you who the DJ is when we know. :) Can you think of a reason not to come with all your pals? Us either.

NYC Audubon experts lead the way as we marvel at quirky but logical bird behavior and delicate feathers in exquisite patterns.

Influential birders such as Roger Tory Peterson and Allan D. Cruickshank learned their craft on Van Cortlandt Park’s ecologically diverse grounds, and these walks celebrate the tradition set by them. Participants will look for resident and migrant species and discuss a wide range of avian topics. No registration necessary. No limit. Free. When birding on your own, check the Nature Sightings log in front of the Nature Center before you head out. At the end of walks, please add your sightings to the log, so others may be aware of recent nature happenings in the park.

The Loisaida United Neighborhood Gardens is working closely with Converge for Climate to coordinate our own homegrown workshops and theirs. The NYC Climate Convergence is a weekend packed with skill-shares, teach-ins, speak-outs and protests from September 19 to 21 in conjunction with the People's Climate March.

The gardens will also host fabulous performances in music, dance, theater, spoken word, on site visual artists, and more. One of the highlights of this year's Festival is a performance by Bread and Puppet Theater of their new piece "Anti Tar Sands Manifesto Pageant."

Hiking is the ultimate way to enjoy the outdoors and reduce stress. Regardless of the intensity level, it is a great way to burn calories and stay fit.

On Nature Exploration Hikes we will discover the plants and animals that inhabit the urban forest.

Hiking programs feature intensity levels ranging from light, (a leisurely stroll on mostly paved paths), to moderate (longer, faster paced hikes on rugged terrain), to vigorous (long distance, with hills and rugged terrain). For all hiking programs we recommend wearing comfortable shoes or boots, and packing water and a light snack.

<![CDATA[Remembering Yesterday: Queens and Its World's Fairs]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/09/20/remembering-yesterday-queens-and-its-worlds-fairs http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/09/20/remembering-yesterday-queens-and-its-worlds-fairs Date: September 20, 2014

Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

Open Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, 2:30 – 4:30 pm. Through May 31, 2015.

Start time: 2:30 pm

End time: 4:30 pm
