Theater for the New City's award-winning Street Theater Company opened its 39th annual tour with "Teach It Right, or, Right to Teach," a rip-roaring musical which tackles the challenges and struggles facing public education in NYC.

Free performances will tour City streets, parks and playgrounds throughout the five boroughs through September 20. Book, lyrics and direction are by Crystal Field; the musical score is composed and arranged by Joseph Vernon Banks.

The production tells the story of a NYC middle school student who is about to enter high school. His school often has no heat in winter, is broiling hot in summer, has no art classes, and a charter school is about to grab half its building.

The student, Michael, deprived of an afterschool program, tries for a part-time job at McDonald's, where he is caught up in a melee when someone bucks the line. Knocked unconscious, he is rescued by an undocumented worker, but dreams an Odyssey through the beggar/transient underground, where the king of the panhandlers is organizing an underground to fight the Real Estate Cartel, headed by B.M. Peabody. The Cartel wants to purge the City of anyone living at or near the poverty line in order to obtain a contract for the 2022 Olympics. Michael is sent to spy on the cartel, but is captured and imprisoned in the Glitter Clutter Club in the sub-basement of Trump Towers.

Meanwhile, Michael's teacher, R.C. Brown, is searching for him. He has suffered, like Michael, at the middle school, enduring budget cuts, teaching to the test, and spending his own money for supplies. He, too, is kidnapped by the Cartel to keep him from finding Michael but is rescued by the daughter of the King of Panhandlers. Michael and R.C. Brown, both now entering high school as student and teacher, are reunited to face the battles of NYC schools, where disputes over privatization reflect the challenges and struggles of the world outside. They will be leaders in the fight to teach it right and for the right to teach.

In The Muppets Take Manhattan, Jim Henson's Muppets are Manhattanites yearning to get a production on Broadway. Luckily, Kermit the Frog has created a successful variety show, which he staged at fictional Danhurst College. His desperation for backers to get it on Broadway (and to win the heart of Miss Piggy), leads him to take a waitering job to support himself. At the restaurant, he meets the friendly Jennie (Juliana Donald), whose parent owns the business and who becomes a source of jealousy for Miss Piggy. Will the Muppets get the production on Broadway? Find out, while enjoying fun musical numbers in locations around NYC! Rated G.

Located along the esplanade leading up to the recently opened High Bridge, Oh Sit! 14 Sculptors Consider the Chair is a group exhibition of nine artists’ public artworks. In a frantic world, finding a chair can be almost impossible and settling comfortably into one can be an enormous satisfaction. Sitting in the wrong seat can cause anxiety and an even pain. Exhibiting artists Dan Bergman, Allan Cyprys, Robert Dell, Gregoire Ferland, Esther Grillo, Christina Jorge, Siena Gillann Porta, Herb Rosenberg and Chuck von Schmidt respond imaginatively to the notion of sitting or using a chair. Oh Sit! is framed as an imperative, a command—a way of asking the viewer to look and really consider the concept “chair” both objectively and subjectively.

A chef from Great Performances demonstrates some intriguing recipes for this versatile root vegetable. Learn to Ride—Adults is a free class for adults and mature teens who are ready to ride. Doesn’t matter if you’re 18 or 80, we’ll get you rolling in no time. With our safe, easy, effective method, Learn to Ride students learn how to balance, pedal, start, stop, and steer a bike, as well as adjust a helmet for proper fit. Most people learn to ride in one session, but even if they don’t, they’ll leave equipped with an easy, low-stress way to teach themselves—or, they can join us for another free class!

Our Learn to Ride classes start you moving on a bike without pedals or training wheels so you can learn to balance the bike. Once you can get your bike to glide (continue to roll with your feet off the ground) and can control the bike with the handlebars and brakes, the pedals are added and you can use your feet to pedal the bike and keep it rolling.

Awesome Asana Yoga is an hour-long exercise in body stretching and mind cleansing taught by registered yoga teacher Chelsea Best. As Chelsea says, “Awesome Asana offers a unique yogic journey, linking breath with movement in a meditative Vinyasa Flow class style designed to awaken the spirit and bring the body and mind back to a place of peace.” The class is Open Level Vinyasa, and is moderately challenging.

MJM’s Awesome Asana is part of Chelsea’s “Localize Yoga” project, which aims to make yoga affordable and accessible – to present it “as a possibility, rather than as a luxury” – to the denizens of upper Manhattan. The class is $5, and mats, should you need one, are provided.

In this contemporary version of Annie, the orphan (Quvenzhané Wallis) has a hard-knock life with her calculating foster mother, Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz). However, all that changes when hard-nosed billionaire and mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) takes her in. Stacks believes that he's Annie's guardian angel. But, Annie's confidence and sunny outlook could save Will instead. Rated PG.
