Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

The annual Emerging Artist Fellowship (EAF) Exhibition is a cornerstone of Socrates Sculpture Park’s visual arts programming and is widely acclaimed for the ambition, breadth, and innovation of the works on view. Featuring fifteen artists, EAF14 is a survey of the compelling and diverse state of sculpture today.

Each EAF14 artist has engaged with the larger narrative of public space in a dynamic and daring way, building upon Socrates Sculpture Park’s goal to present socially aware, inspiring art in the public realm. EAF14 artists were selected through a highly competitive process that attracted a broad field of nearly 300 candidates, reviewed by the park’s curatorial advisors Anne Barlow (Executive Director, Art in General) and Joe Sheftel (Joe Sheftel Gallery, New York). Selected EAF14 artists were awarded a 2014 Emerging Artist Fellowship, including 24/7 access to the park’s outdoor studio and facilities, as well as the financial, technical, and curatorial support to realize his or her most ambitious work possible.

The New York State Pavilion is a legacy of the 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair. It is located in the southwest corner of Flushing Meadow Corona Park, where the Long Island Expressway crosses over the Grand Central Parkway. From these freeways alone, the pavilion is seen by hundreds of thousands of motorists per day and is a symbol of the Empire State, the “Eiffel Tower of Queens.”

From the observation towers that offer spectacular views of Queens and beyond; to the expansive Tent of Tomorrow, which showcased the world’s largest map (of New York State); to the stunning Queens Theatre in the Park, New York State Pavilion is an insightful look at this iconic landmark, with many spectacular historic color photographs, published here for the first time.

Christian Kellberg is privileged to have been part of a volunteer effort to paint the New York State Pavilion mezzanine over the last three years. He has photographed many neighborhoods and their landmarks and is the photographer of much of the content in this book.

Artist Alan Messer skillfully captures many, from exquisite migrating blackburnian warblers in Central Park’s ramble to a Northern Harrier scanning the vast marshes of Jamaica Bay. Conserving Our City of Nature: The Artwork of Alan Messer presented by NYC Audubon reveals over 30 of Messer’s detailed paintings, illustrations, and field sketches of New York City's avian wildlife and habitats, offering a view of NYC Audubon's conservation mission through an artistic eye.

NYC Parks is pleased to present the exhibition: “Native Ensemble: Artists Chronicle Staten Island’s Natural Spaces”, featuring local Staten Island artists that will run from February 13 – March 29, 2015, with an opening reception on Thursday, February 12th from 7-9 p.m. in the Lenape Gallery at the Conference House Park Visitor Center.

The 19th century European and American passion for historic, romantic and picturesque architecture combined in a profusion of revival styles including the Greek, Gothic, Renaissance, Italian, French, and English among others. A rapidly expanding population with increasing wealth during this period made New York City a uniquely fertile site for architects, craftsmen and home goods manufacturers to develop their art and display their sophistication in the emerging “Empire City.” The resultant urban landscape became a fantastic mix of styles, colors, patterns and decoration – and ultimately the stuff of our beloved historic districts and individual landmarks of today.

Architect and lecturer Curtis Estes returns for the final installment in his three-part series exploring the development of that most essential of all urban building types – the townhouse.

Many New Yorkers are unaware of the 350 species of wild birds—almost a third of all bird species in North America—that live in or pass through New York City each year.

Please note: this event has been cancelled.

The Arts, Culture & Fun series presents The Lives of Hamilton Fish.

- Art Exhibit March 2 - 31, 2015

- Film Screening March 28, 2015

On January 16, 1936 the deaths of two famous men were printed on the front page of the Peekskill Evening Star. The two men shared the name Hamilton Fish. One was a notorious killer Hamilton "Albert" Fish and the other, Hamilton Fish II, a beloved statesman. This coincidence was discovered by artist Rachel Mason who was inspired to create an opera and feature film called The Lives of Hamilton Fish.

Scenes in the film were shot at historic sites in New York State and amazingly, The Hamilton Fish Recreation Center was completed in 1936, the same year that the two men died. To coincide with the film's New York City debut which will happen in March 2015, The Hamilton Fish Recreation Center will present a special exhibition of Mason's storyboard sketches, props, paintings and research.

In addition to the exhibition, the center will host a screening on Saturday, March 28 at 3:00 p.m.

The exhibition is curated by Sarah Yuster.

The eight artists featured in the show: David DiLillo, Ann Marie McDonnell, Michael McWeeney, Gail Middleton, Bill Murphy, Kristi Pfister, Melissa West and Sarah Yuster will present inspired 2-D and 3-D works created in a variety of art mediums that explore Staten Island’s natural elements and open spaces in conventional and unconventional techniques. Allusions to the human narrative in these works give way in an effort to shape the poetic and elusive concept of time and nature.

Lenape Gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. For additional information please contact Frank Gessner at (718) 227-1463.

Many New Yorkers are unaware of the 350 species of wild birds—almost a third of all bird species in North America—that live in or pass through New York City each year.
