The Bronx Latin AMerican Art Biennial presents the exhibition Open For Discussion. Art by Eduardo Terranova, Marylin Caminero, Pablo Caviede, Yarisa Colon, Josue Guarionex, Elizabeth Moreno, Delilah Montoya, Justo Carreras, Alejandro Epifanio, Jose Ortiz, Yehimar Abyssys, Carolina Bermudez, Melissa Calderon, Wanda Cotorreal, Martita Ibanez, Jonas Hidalgo.

The exhibition suggests that art discussion is inherently an expression of populism and protest; therefore it is important not to deny the mass attraction to it, but to recognize its communicative power.

Taxonomy is a collection of George Boorujy’s dynamic large-scale paintings of North American animals with disarmingly human characteristics, as well as a series of his preliminary clay models and drawings. Inhabitants of New York City and other urban centers often think of themselves as removed from nature, but Boorujy’s hyperrealistic ink-on-paper portraits force us to rethink our relationship with animals and our own place within the environment.

Rainwater harvesting is the practice of catching and holding rain for later use.

Since 2002, community gardens have been leading the charge to conserve water and redirect storm water runoff by collecting rainwater. This workshop will be an opportunity to learn more about these efforts and how you can build a simple 2-barrel system using materials that are readily available and at little to no cost.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels. Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

MAKERS is a six-part PBS series profiling the impact women have had over the past 50 years in six industries—comedy, politics, space, war, business, and Hollywood. MAKERS aims to be the largest and most dynamic collection of women’s stories ever assembled.

Women in Comedy tracks the rise of women in the world of comedy, from the “dangerous” comedy of 70s sitcoms like Maude to the groundbreaking women of the 1980s American comedy club boom and building to today’s multifaceted landscape. Contemporary comics talk about where women started in this competitive, male-dominated profession and where they are determined to go.

The film screening is followed by a stand-up comedy routine by Mindy Matijasevic, a Bronx native, mom, Adult-Ed teacher, ex!-wife, poet, actress, and comic. Mindy will talk about her early experience of stepping into the stand-up comedy waters, and what she believes are still barriers to it being woman-friendly.

NYC Audubon experts lead the way as we marvel at quirky but logical bird behavior and delicate feathers in exquisite patterns.

Influential birders such as Roger Tory Peterson and Allan D. Cruickshank learned their craft on Van Cortlandt Park’s ecologically diverse grounds, and these walks celebrate the tradition set by them. Participants will look for resident and migrant species and discuss a wide range of avian topics. No registration necessary. No limit. Free. When birding on your own, check the Nature Sightings log in front of the Nature Center before you head out. At the end of walks, please add your sightings to the log, so others may be aware of recent nature happenings in the park.

Bring binoculars if you have them and wear sturdy shoes!
