Urban Theatre Movement's Handball, written by Seth Zvi Rosenfeld and directed by Brenda Banda delivers an explosive take on gentrification in New York City. The play tracks a park filled with characters as unique and diverse as the city itself. Tempers flare as new transplants work to make their mark while old residents struggle to maintain their way of life. Over the course of two hot, summer days we watch a once lively, buoyant park become extremely tense as each character struggles to find their way and survive while witnessing their neighborhood falling apart. Stories become intertwined, power is shifted and change reveals itself to be inevitable. Handball tells the story of modern-day urban America and the people struggling to find their way in it.

Spectrum Dance Theater was founded by Seattle dancers in 1982 to make dance more accessible to diverse communities. Under Donald Byrd’s visionary artistic leadership since 2002, Spectrum has transformed into a company of regional and national significance, igniting audiences through Byrd’s ambitious artistic agenda, whose appetite to explore the arts knows no boundaries. The dancers of Spectrum Dance Theater are a small, select group of unique dance artists from around the globe, individually chosen and trained in Mr. Byrd’s singular approach to dance/theater - physically demanding and emotionally charged. The company has produced thrilling and challenging works in contemporary dance to critical acclaim. Donald Byrd achieved international visibility for the creation of his Harlem Nutcracker and for his Tony-nominated choreography for the Broadway smash, The Color Purple. No less ambitious in the 21st century, Byrd leads the company through programming themes that give audiences insight into his far-ranging artistic ambition.\

Sidra Bell Dance New York, is a boutique company of prolific movement artists based in New York City that presents innovative, kinetic, and provocative dance theater works. It has continually presented progressive, highly designed, cinematic, glamorous, and elaborate full-scale productions to sold-out audiences. Bell is a sought after voice in contemporary dance with a strong female vision creating works that ignite the imagination and explore the psyche. The repertoire is unusual, haunting, emotionally transporting, articulate, sensual, and highly physical. The work has become known for an atmospheric, unconventional, and spectacular quality that pushes past traditional boundaries. The company synthesizes the worlds of design, media, fashion, and spectatorship. THINK.FEEL.PLAY.EXPERIENCE.

Treat your child to a day camp like they've only imagined at Van Cortlandt House Museum.

Immersed in the everyday life of a child in 18th century and dressed in period style clothing, campers learn about the Van Cortlandt Family and the history that happened here all while having fun.

Children will also travel in time back to the early years of the Revolutionary War and experience the life of a soldier in General George Washington’s army. They will lend a hand with pitching tents and setting up camp. “Enlistment” in the army, military drill, and reconnaissance, are also part of the action.

Camp is lead by Van Cortlandt House Museum’s professional staff, talented living history volunteers, and college students studying material culture and art education. Daily activities for Adventures in Time Summer History Camp are designed in keeping with New York State 4th grade curriculum standards and are appropriate for children ages 6 - 12.

Adventures in Time Summer History Camp is open to all children with a sense of adventure who have completed 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th grade (or the equivalent) in the Spring of 2014. We encourage early enrollment, as camp space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre. Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is to focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass. Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre's Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.

Rockaway!, a free public arts festival sponsored by the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) to celebrate the reopening of Fort Tilden and recognize the ongoing recovery of the Rockaway peninsula, opens June 29 and continues through September 1, 2014. Invited by the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA), an association of artists based in and around the Rockaways, and the JBRPC, MoMA PS1 has assisted and supported the conception of this festival.

One component of the festival is a group exhibition organized in collaboration with the Honolulu Biennial on the grounds of the newly restored Rockaway Beach Surf Club on Beach 87th Street in Rockaway Beach. Following Hurricane Sandy, the Surf Club was the one of the largest relief centers on the peninsula; their organization facilitated and directed over 5,000 volunteers, with major contributions from MoMA PS1. The exhibition celebrates the efforts of the Rockaway community of surfers and artists in rebuilding their neighborhood.

For details and times of the rest of the exhibit, please visit the Rockaway! website.

Each week, Wave Hill educators share some of their favorite nature stories. These stories––classics and more––will come to life through interactive readings, sing-alongs and puppets.

Programs are held outdoors in good weather; in inclement weather we will meet in Wave Hill House. In the summer, the flower gardens come to life with flittering and fluttering butterflies and moths.

This week, join us as we read stories and do a movement piece about the life cycles of these colorful creatures. Our books this week are Butterfly Butterfly by Petr Horáek, Waiting for Wings by Lois Ehlert and The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.

The Winter's Tale by William Shakespeare, Directed by Nicholas Martin-Smith

Written late in William Shakespeare’s career, The Winter’s Tale (1609-1611) is a story of jealousy, loss, and redemption. Leontes, the King of Sicily, believes his pregnant wife is carrying his best friend’s love child. Leontes’s jealousy turns to tyranny as the king proceeds to destroy his entire family and a lifelong friendship. Sixteen long years pass, and we witness one of the most astonishing endings in English literature. (summary via Shmoop dot com)

Van Cortlandt House Museum is owned by the City of New York Parks & Recreation, operated by The National Society of Colonial Dames in the State of New York, and a member of The Historic House Trust of New York City.
