Although our observable Universe is almost 14 billion years old, the basis for much of what we see today was laid in the first 400,000 years. In fact, the first tenth of the first second of the Universe was filled with some of the most violent conditions the Universe has ever seen!

Learn about the Universe’s dramatic origins in this talk by Jaclyn Avidon from the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York, as part of NYC Parks’ Dark Nights, Bright Lights series. After the lecture, telescopes will be set up for observing on the rooftop (weather permitting). Guests are welcome to bring their own binoculars and telescopes and set them up alongside the experts.

The event is free and open to the public.

Sonomi Kobayashi is a New York based artist, from Japan. She studied painting, sculpture and printmaking at the Art Students League of New York from which she received a studio certificate in painting. She now works out of her studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York and exhibits frequently in the United States, Japan, and Europe. She received the Will Barnet Grant in Printmaking in 2013, and has done residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, VT, Vytlacil Campas, Sparkill, NY, and Cat'Art Contemporary Art Centre, Sainte Colombe, France. Test your knowledge of birds in this fun, mildly competitive hour of puzzles, Bingo, card games, and more!
  • Nature on the Go!, 3 pm
An Alliance Naturalist will lead children and families to areas near the Audubon Center, where you can learn about the nature that is all around us and participate in a Citizen Science project.
  • Animal Encounter, 4 pm
Curious as to how “Snappy” the turtle got her name? Want to watch the snake gobble up a mouse? Join Alliance Naturalists in learning more about the animals in the Audubon Center’s collection and even assist in an actual feeding.

Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

Open Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, 2:30 – 4:30 pm. Through May 31, 2015.

Many New Yorkers are unaware of the 350 species of wild birds—almost a third of all bird species in North America—that live in or pass through New York City each year. Artist Alan Messer skillfully captures many, from exquisite migrating blackburnian warblers in Central Park’s ramble to a Northern Harrier scanning the vast marshes of Jamaica Bay. Conserving Our City of Nature: The Artwork of Alan Messer presented by NYC Audubon reveals over 30 of Messer’s detailed paintings, illustrations, and field sketches of New York City's avian wildlife and habitats, offering a view of NYC Audubon's conservation mission through an artistic eye.

Classes will employ similar modalities of movement like yoga, Pilates and aerobic exercise. Guest classes on Reiki, stress management, tai chi and other subjects will provide an enhanced, comprehensive experience for all participants. All classes are designed to tone and strengthen muscles, with a focus on strength and cardiovascular fitness. Light weights and exercise bands are often used.
