Join NYC Parks for a special concert featuring Taikoza. Taikoza has created a new sound using the thunderous rhythms of the ancestral Taiko drums and the magical sounds of the bamboo flutes. Roughly translated, Taiko means big drums, and that’s exactly what Taikoza brings—big drums, powerful rhythms, and electrifying, room-thumping energy. This exciting group draws from Japan’s rich tradition of music and performance to create a highly visual performance.

About Taikoza
Taikoza was formed in New York City by members of Ondekoza (the group that started the renaissance of Taiko in Japan in the 60s and introduced Taiko to the world). The members of Taikoza have performed on stages and parks around the world.

This spring, the Playground Improvement Project (PIP) of the New York Junior League invites you to join them in rolling up your sleeves to help revitalize Marcus Garvey Park.

Throughout five weekends in April and May, PIP committee members, New York Junior League volunteers, and external volunteers will spend a day in the park gardening, landscaping, painting, and completing other tasks to help spruce up this well-loved park. We will provide you with breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt. Please reach out to playground@nyjl.org with any questions or if you are interested in making a donation to this cause.

Please RSVP if you are interested in participating in one or more park days. Registration closes when capacity is reached or the Wednesday prior to that weekend's park days. Volunteers must be at least 13 years old. Volunteers ages 13 - 18 will require a parental consent form.

About the New York Junior League Playground Improvement Project
For 25 years, the Playground Improvement Project (PIP) has been a New York Junior League signature community project. Our volunteers create safe, beautiful, well-organized and educational play spaces for children and other members of the New York City community. PIP focuses on sites and parks that need major renovation and have the greatest impact on the surrounding community. Weekend cleanup days include landscaping and repairing the parks. We work with over 700 volunteers each season to help improve the park and make a positive impact on the community.

Discover Freshkills Park and explore 700 acres of the otherwise closed site with free tours and recreation.

At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park is almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park to be developed in New York City in over 100 years. It also has a significant history as the site of the former Fresh Kills Landfill, which was the largest landfill in the world before closing in 2001. Since then, the landfill has been covered with layers of soil and infrastructure, and the site has become a place for wildlife, recreation, science, education, and art. As the park is built in phases, free tours and events provide early access for learning and exploration opportunities.

On Discovery Day, eight miles of trails and paths will offer views of the park’s hills, creeks, and wildlife. A 5K course will be mapped out for runners and walkers. There will also be free bike rentals, tours, music, activities for kids, shuttle buses into the park, and a shuttle to the top of a hill that offers panoramic views of New York City. Kayaking tours will also be available with pre-registration required. Pre-registration for kayaking tours will become available on May 1.

A free shuttle will make trips to and from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal in St. George (Ramp E, Taxi Stand) during the event. Parking will also be just outside Freshkills Park in the lots near 350 Wild Avenue. From there, visitors can take a shuttle bus or walk or bike one mile to the main hub.

Did you know that the north end of Central Park has a rich history that includes the British having been stationed here during the American Revolution, and American troops stationed there during the War of 1812? Recent archaeological and historical investigations in the area have revealed even more information about how the "Fort Landscape" was used in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, before this area was part of Central Park. This season, join our guides and learn the history of this part of the Park, get insight into the studies in the area, and appreciate the recent restorations undertaken by the Conservancy.

Highlights of this tour include McGowan's Pass, Fort Clinton, Nutter's Battery, and the Harlem Meer.

The tour route involves many hills and stairs, and some uneven terrain. The tour starts at Charles A. Dana Discovery Center (inside the park at 110th Street between Fifth and Lenox Avenues), and ends near the park perimeter at 106th Street and Fifth Avenue.

For weather cancellation and other ticket policies, please review the Central Park Conservancy's policies carefully.

Rock hard and thrive on International Day of Families at Mamapalooza! This event features music, family-focused business, wellness activities, art, and activism to inspire all to find their voice and convey peace and equality.

Music Lineup

Vered and the Babes are a downtown Doo-Wop band meets an upbeat Peter, Paul, and Mary. Their playful vocal harmonies and creative instrumentation including lively horns and even pots and pans keep parents and kids jumping and singing along throughout the show. They sing about everything that being a parent and a baby brings—the elated highs of loving each other and the much needed time outs—for the parents! Vered's albums, Good Morning My Love and Hello My Baby are Gold Award Winners from both the Parents' Choice Foundation and from National Parenting Publications. Parents often say that Vered’s music is like a soundtrack to life with their little ones because it brings them together in the loving and playful moments and feels like an understanding friend in the challenging ones.

Jeanette Berry and the Soul Nerds is a revolving group of musicians centered around lead vocalist Jeanette Berry and her original songs. Whether R&B, Soul, Jazz, Reggae, the Blues, Funk or Neo-Soul, this group tells stories through music that bridge over genres to the heart of all things—love.

Miranda Writes is a crusader for positivity. Heavily influenced by classic hip-hop and current legends alike, Writes relentlessly fires her message "Light Prevails Dark" over nostalgic but catchy beats. Hip-hop fans spanning generations have acclaimed Writes a breath of fresh air for her timeless style and meaningful lyrics.

j and the 9s are a hard hitting, costumed flute rock experience from Brooklyn that breed together rock-and-roll riffs, the raw sound of punk, and an entertaining interactive stage show.

Cecilia Villar Eljuri’s music is a mirror on this generation’s global fusion reflecting her Spanish and Lebanese heritage, the rhythms of her homeland, Ecuador, and the punk and rock and roll from the melting pot of her youth in NYC. Eljuri filters life’s daily cacophony into beautiful music with vital meaning. She floats, indeed soars to heights unreached by any other Latina electric guitarist.

Gymboree will be at the event all day with a play area for the tiny people in your lives!

The experienced boatbuilders of the Village Community Boathouse will lead volunteers in constructing a 14-foot-long Whitehall rowboat in Brooklyn Bridge Park's Community Room at 99 Plymouth. Named after the Lower Manhattan street that now ends at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, Whitehalls were the water taxis of their day, speedily ferrying passengers across the East River and to and from ships at anchor in the harbor. The shape and dimensions of this boat are drawn from a Whitehall built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1890.

Regular boatbuilding sessions will take place on Mondays and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to noon until May 22. Spectators are more than welcome and volunteers are encouraged to join. No experience is necessary.

The third installation of Chat Travieso's Boogie Down Booth, a colorful new public installation bringing Bronx music, solar–powered lights, seating, and community art, launches at this public event on May 17. Travieso's two previous Boogie Down Boothes appeared in 2014 under the 2/5 train at Southern Boulevard and Freeman Street and in 2015 in Seabury Park.

Each booth has been adapted for different sites. Boogie Down Booth: Melrose will include table space for students at Boricua College, people who work nearby, and the general public to enjoy, as a compliment to the existing benches in O’Neill Triangle. Located across the street from the future permanent site of the Bronx Music Heritage Center, the installation will be a way to inform people about this development. The installation will be open until May 2017.

Join Wave Hill’s Curatorial Fellow for a tour of current exhibitions.

In the main gallery, (Not So) Still Life presents novel ways that contemporary artists are transforming the still life genre to engage with current culture. As a subject, the still life has remained popular since the early Renaissance, featuring compositions of natural and inanimate objects often presented with allegorical connotations. Today, artists are creating new variations by working in photography and sculpture to conflate interior space with landscape, or by using video and animation to convey still life in motion. Artists include Adam Brent, Elizabeth Bryant, Nicole Cohen, Ori Gersht, Jessica Jackson Hutchins, Sue Johnson, Laura Letinsky, Beth Lipman, Erin O’Keefe,Donna Sharrett, Nicolas Touron, Michael Vahrenwald, Rodrigo Valenzuela and Alex Verhaest.
