The Grammy-winning, TED-Talking, fiercely politically, and devotedly multi-cultural L.A. party band Ozomatli, known for its “effortless mashup of musical styles,” (NPR Music) set its sights on the littlest revelers a few years ago with the album OzoKids. They’re here for our annual homage to the trailblazing children’s book author and illustrator Ezra Jack Keats, a Brooklyn native who was the first to populate his distinctly urban stories with young people of color.

<![CDATA[SummerStage Presents: Roberto Roena y su Apollo Sound / La Mecanica Popular / Little Louie Vega (Elements of Life/Masters at Work)]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/06/14/summerstage-roberto-roena-y-su-apollo-sound-la-mecanica-popular-little-louie-vega-elements-of-lifemasters-at-work http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2014/06/14/summerstage-roberto-roena-y-su-apollo-sound-la-mecanica-popular-little-louie-vega-elements-of-lifemasters-at-work Date: June 14, 2014

Roberto Roena is a salsa music percussionist, orchestra leader, and dancer. Roena was one of the original members of El Gran Combo, and he later became the leader of his own band, "Roberto Roena y Su Apollo Sound," arguably one of the best Latin salsa bands in Puerto Rico. Roena has also been a long-time member of the Fania All Stars, the showcase group for the Fania Records label, which has enjoyed worldwide success since the 1970s. Complementing the musicality of his salsa group was always the showmanship inherent in Roberto Roena. Dying his hair in new colors, playing percussion in his underwear “flying” around the stage of New York City's Madison Square Garden were some of the tricks that he used to stand out among the other groups in vogue. Roberto always considered variety as the key to success, leading him to include in his musical repertoire everything from go-go to the romantic, the same in English as in Spanish. Given Roena has been performing for nearly 55 years with his orchestra, he's obviously doing something very right.

A meeting of musicians from Perú, the United States and Colombia – only possible in New York – gave birth to La Mecánica Popular in 2011. Led by native Peruvian Efraín Rozas, the band has a unique sound, steeped in the salsa dura of the 1970′s, but moves along in a trippy way with experimental synths and Peruvian chicha style guitars, without ever loosing clave. Their self-titled debut was produced by Xuxi Lazzaro (producer of Rita Indiana, and Grammy winner Juan Luis Guerra), and has been praised by critics around the world. They have been called "one of the top 3 live Latin acts in the U.S.," by Latin-Pop star Juanes. La Mecánica Popular is one of the most exciting bands in the new wave of future-rooted Latin American music, combining effortlessly avant-garde and psychedelic sounds with a tight and syncopated Salsa flavor.

A godfather of global dance music, “Little” Louie Vega has painted an award-winning career from a palette mixed with everything from salsa and afro-beat, to jazz, hip-hop and soul. What distinguishes the Grammy winner and 4-time nominee as one of the best living house music deejays is his ability to evolve alongside the times, distill the current musical landscape through his unique taste and put his own timeless spin on it. Breaking down musical barriers and bringing people together through a love of music has always been Vega’s aim; after more than 20 years in the game his contributions continue to positively influence the global house and world music. Listen closely as the best has yet to come from Louie Vega!

Hamish Linklater and Tony® nominee Lily Rabe return to the Park this summer as the wise-cracking, would-be lovers Beatrice and Benedick in the beloved romantic comedy Much Ado About Nothing. Central Park becomes sun-drenched Sicily at the turn of the last century, where the heat of summer ignites the fevered passions of lovesick ladies in corsets and pining gentlemen spying from the verandah. Three-time Tony winner Jack O’Brien directs this delightful skirmish of wit between two self-declared bachelors tricked by their mischief-making friends into falling in love against their will and in spite of their own hearts.

New York's most treasured summer tradition, Free Shakespeare in the Park, celebrates its 52nd season in Central Park's famous Delacorte Theater. Love and madness, laughter and tragedy combine for a uniquely thrilling season of exciting theater and exceptional performances under the stars. Join over 5 million people who have enjoyed The Public Theater's free performances and experience the heights of romance and the depths of duplicity in a setting unlike any other, in the heart of Manhattan.

Free tickets to the 2014 season will once again be distributed in the Park, online via the Virtual Ticketing Lottery, and in the five boroughs of New York City. For more info on getting tickets, visit the Shakespeare in the Park tickets page.

NOTE: MOVED FROM FRIDAY TO SUNDAY DUE TO RAIN

Buffet Froid is a French film with English subtitles, directed by Bertrand Blier in 1979, with Gerard Depardieu, Jean Carmet, Michel Serrault, and Bernard Blier. Beginning with a random and absurd stabbing in a deserted subway station, the story moves from one murder to the next, bringing together quirky characters in an empty building. We meet the young, unemployed Alphonse Tram, his wife’s queasy murderer, and a police inspector with an impulse to kill every time he hears a Brahms quintet…

Films on the Green is a free outdoor French film festival produced annually in New York City Parks by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, the City of New York Parks & Recreation and FACE.

Closely Knit: A Textile Analysis of Animals by Ruth Marshall brings attention to illegal wildlife trade and species loss in a way that unites a widened audience of scientists, art enthusiasts and the general public. Her life-size, knitted textile pelts of tigers, leopards, coral snakes and Australian marsupials exemplify how artisan goods have the potential to have higher commercial value than poached skins on the black market. Her textiles reinforce the ideology that support for conservation and culture is a more sustainable, viable and lucrative endeavor than the illegal wildlife trade.

She has conducted research at the American Museum of Natural History, Melbourne Museum and the Berlin Zoo. For Closely Knit, Marshall studied Askai, Central Park Zoo’s six-year-old male snow leopard and created a new knitted work based on his distinctive coat. The exhibition is staged in the historic Arsenal building, which housed a menagerie of gifted animals on the basement level from 1859 to 1871, and was the first home of the American Museum of Natural History from 1869 to 1877 before it moved to its current home on Manhattan’s West Side.

Dr. Polisar’s program unifies hands-on science and diplomacy with a broad array of partners to maintain a safe home for jaguars. His program spans sixty degrees of latitude, stretching from the southwest United States to northern Paraguay, covering both threatened edges of jaguar range and globally significant populations. Over 5,000 jaguars across more than 154,000 square miles are protected.

Since its inception in 1895 as the New York Zoological Society, WCS and the City of New York have played an enormous role in wildlife conservation in the American West and globally. Dr. Polisar will describe how his team continues that tradition, delivering critical conservation efforts and measures for the greatest cat of the Americas, the jaguar.

Dr. John Polisar is the Coordinator of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s (WCS) Jaguar Conservation Program (JCP). After his initial field experience in Montana, Idaho and British Columbia, he was drawn south to the biological diversity and ecological complexities of the tropics. Obtaining graduate degrees from the University of Florida, he then delivered research and conservation projects spanning eleven countries across the Latin America and the Caribbean region.

This event is free, but seating is limited. To RSVP, please email artandantiquities@parks.nyc.gov.

And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.
