Owls are creatures who swallow their prey whole. Parts of the prey, such as bones, feathers and fur are bound up during digestion into a tight pellet, which the owl regurgitates. Drop-in for this exploratory workshop, and discover the origins of the owl’s diet. Ages six and older welcome with an adult. Hoot and Howl Weekend event.

Have you ever seen or heard an owl in New York City? Believe it or not, owls survive and reproduce in many of our urban greenspaces. Wildlife biologist Chris Nagy, Director of Research and Land Management at the Mianus River Gorge, studied small populations of eastern screech owls in New York City parks for over 10 years. Using pint-sized backpack transmitters, as well as more traditional scientific methods, Dr. Nagy examined the survival and migration patterns of local owls. Hear more about his methods and findings regarding screech, barred and great-horned owls in and around NYC.

The year 1619 marked the beginning of the slave trade in the Thirteen Colonies, but the first African American elected to office in the United States of America has been documented as early as 1768.

Despite slavery, prejudice and Jim Crow laws, America has seen numerous influential African American leaders who shaped the social, legal, and justice systems. Artists in this exhibition offer broad interpretations on the theme of African Americans in public service. In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” The installation consists of previously and newly acquired works, all from the original Gracie Mansion period, which have been curated to create a more historically accurate picture of life in New York City during the time of Gracie Mansion’s construction.

America: The Legacy of African American Public Service celebrates noted government officials, as well as activists and members of the public who dedicated their lives to the greater good of the people.

America: The Legacy of African American Public Service celebrates noted government officials, as well as activists and members of the public who dedicated their lives to the greater good of the people.

This exhibition is presented by NYC Parks Ebony Society.
