Starting last year on Alice Austen’s birthday, the Alice Austen House began a project documenting the grounds and waterfront from Austen’s home, Clear Comfort. Each day since then the house, grounds, and activities of the site have been documented, much like Alice Austen did over a hundred years ago. The museum will present an installation of nearly 200 snapshots capturing the daily life of this historic site and invite visitors to participate in the project.

Alice Austen Everyday is on view September 26 – December 30, 2015 and shown in conjunction with the museum’s 30th Anniversary exhibition “Becoming Clear Comfort: History of a Landmark," tracing the history of the house. Alice Austen House's 30th anniversary exhibition brings to light the history of the museum’s National and New York City Landmark building, tracing its path from one-room Dutch farmhouse in the 1690s, to Victorian Gothic cottage and home to early American photographer Alice Austen (1866-1952), to protected landmark, to public museum. Presented upon the museum’s 30th anniversary and as part of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the NYC Landmarks Law, this exhibition explores the Alice Austen House’s significance in New York City history and tells the fascinating story of the saving of the house from threatened destruction. MJM’s Awesome Asana is part of Chelsea’s “Localize Yoga” project, which aims to make yoga affordable and accessible – to present it “as a possibility, rather than as a luxury” – to the denizens of upper Manhattan. The class is $5, and mats, should you need one, are provided.

The Wonder Under features photos of found objects collected from the surrounding landscape with a focus on the newly completed Main Street section of the park. The various two-dimensional curiosity cabinets reference museum vitrines but without employing the logical order commonly associated with such forms of display.

Jensen built an extensive collection of objects from the shoreline and construction sites. The object images reveal how the past and present are intertwined in this landscape. Historical artifacts like 19th century porcelain, pottery fragments, and flint and obsidian spear points, mix with contemporary castoffs of plastic, metal and glass. Many of the objects are familiar, while some are strange and unidentifiable.

Jensen has exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Queens Museum, and the National Gallery of Art.

Light refreshments will be served.

Each day since then the house, grounds, and activities of the site have been documented, much like Alice Austen did over a hundred years ago. The museum will present an installation of nearly 200 snapshots capturing the daily life of this historic site and invite visitors to participate in the project.

Presented upon the museum’s 30th anniversary and as part of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the NYC Landmarks Law, this exhibition explores the Alice Austen House’s significance in New York City history and tells the fascinating story of the saving of the house from threatened destruction.
