Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form that has evolved over centuries into an exciting combination of martial arts, dance, music, and acrobatics. Some of capoeira’s benefits include strength, flexibility, stamina, overall fitness and confidence. Benefits of capoeira for kids include promoting social interaction and sense of belonging, building confidence, discipline and self esteem, promoting a healthy lifestyle so children become active, and healthy, and develop cultural awareness and tolerance. Wear comfortable clothing.

Capoeira was developed in Brazil, but its history extends to Africa and tribes from Angola. Slaves living on Brazilian Plantations who weren’t allowed to openly practice traditional forms of self-defense developed an ingenious method of disguising their training by combining it with dance-like movements, singing, and the rhythms of primitive instruments.

The legendary Chuck Chillout began his illustrious career on 98.7 Kiss-FM in 1982. Chuck Chillout was one of the first D.J.s to become world renown include Run-DMC, LL Cool J, Salt-N-Pepa and Slick Rick. “Hip-hop was fun and energetic during this time. Hip-hop was just growing so there was a lot of creativity and great liver performances,” says Chuck about the hip-hop community in 1982. Chuck has been blazing new trails ever since, including becoming one of the first D.J.’s to play hip-hop music in Japan. Chuck’s affiliation with old and new school Hip-Hop and R&B has helped him land the title of one of today’s most sought after DJ’s. Most recently his participation in the Essence Music Festival & Cruise has escalated his career to new heights.

D.J. Hollywood’s career began in 1971. A native of Harlem, New York, he was one of the first dj’s to ever blend music with rhyme to help create what is now a billion dollar industry. His versatility is unsurpassed and he is known to be the foremost rhyme master on the microphone and treacherous on the wheels of steel, a phrase he coined, among others in the hip hop vernacular. He turned the world on its ear to the new art form that is now called Hip Hop when he was hired at Club 371 in the Bronx. D.J. Hollywood is a legend throughout the entertainment industry as well as locally as the ‘go to’ man whenever you want your party rocked and your affair to be memorable. D.J. Hollywood has brought joy to millions over the years and he isn’t through yet. He is truly in his words, “the best that ever did it who got away with it.”

David Chief Rocker Busy Bee Parker is the first solo MC and played himself in “Wild Style” a 1982 documentary about the Hip Hop scene. In 1981, Busy Bee and Kool Moe Dee made history with the first Battle in Hip Hop. “Old School” artists are seeing new life with the growth of the Hip-Hop industry and now the Chief Rocker is on tour luring new fans to the culture. Busy Bee’s fellow legends include KRS-One, Red Alert, Funkmaster Flex, De La Soul, DJ Kool Herc, and Mellemel to name a few. Bee spends his time in the studio recording or on tour all over the world.

From Deejaying in the Skate Key on Allerton Avenue in the Bronx for more than a decade, to selling mix tapes locally and now mix CDs worldwide, to playing at the legendary Fever night club and making special appearances on Hot 97 with Funk Master Flex and touring with the late Big L, DJ La Luv got his first big break by being the official tour Deejay for Terror Squad and the late great Big Pun. Even though he is sought out for his old school mixes, he is definitely capable of providing you with the newest and hottest music in all genres. He's been mixing music for over 20 years and is highly favored for company events, baby showers, birthday parties, community events and for a lot of couples, the most important day in their life, weddings. DJ La Luv will always be well known as the Bronx Finest because he not only motivates and masters parties, he gives it back annually to the children in his community by having a Back to School Jam. DJ La Luv is CEO of the 4TH Quarter Boyz Inc.

Mickey Bentson aka Mick Benzo owns and runs rap-oriented Pay Up Management. He was one of the founding members of the Zulu Nation, arguably the most important catalyst for hip hop. He has previously managed Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Everland and Big Punisher, and he now manages Ice-T and Fat Joe.

For the first time in a long time, Hip Hop can genuinely say that a new generation of MC’s have arrived. Sure, there are those who helped birth the culture and music and people who can say they grew up with it. But now, you are witnessing perhaps the first generation that can say they were raised on Hip Hop almost exclusively. If you don’t agree, you’re probably not listening to enough ScHoolboy Q. Although the artist born Quincy Matthew Hanley has only been rapping since 2007, his bluntly charismatic presence on wax should’ve already put him on your radar as one of rap’s emerging voices. After his new project Habits & Contradictions (#HnC) makes its way into your rotation though, he’s sure to be a fixture.

Hamish Linklater and Tony® nominee Lily Rabe return to the Park this summer as the wise-cracking, would-be lovers Beatrice and Benedick in the beloved romantic comedy Much Ado About Nothing. Central Park becomes sun-drenched Sicily at the turn of the last century, where the heat of summer ignites the fevered passions of lovesick ladies in corsets and pining gentlemen spying from the verandah. Three-time Tony winner Jack O’Brien directs this delightful skirmish of wit between two self-declared bachelors tricked by their mischief-making friends into falling in love against their will and in spite of their own hearts.

New York's most treasured summer tradition, Free Shakespeare in the Park, celebrates its 52nd season in Central Park's famous Delacorte Theater. Love and madness, laughter and tragedy combine for a uniquely thrilling season of exciting theater and exceptional performances under the stars. Join over 5 million people who have enjoyed The Public Theater's free performances and experience the heights of romance and the depths of duplicity in a setting unlike any other, in the heart of Manhattan.

Free tickets to the 2014 season will once again be distributed in the Park, online via the Virtual Ticketing Lottery, and in the five boroughs of New York City. For more info on getting tickets, visit the Shakespeare in the Park tickets page.

Please note: on the 28th there will be a sign language interpreter at the performance.

And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

One of the most beloved hip hop crews in rap music, D.I.T.C. (an acronym for "Diggin' in the Crates") consists of veteran rappers, DJs, and producers dedicated to the true essence of rap music: original lyrics and strong beat-savvy productions. With their dedication to hip-hop purity, members Showbiz & A.G. (Andre the Giant), Diamond D, Lord Finesse, Fat Joe, O.C., Buckwild, and the late Big L have at least one classic album under their belts. Although they never reached the success of their multiplatinum peers, individually they became successful by maintaining their integrity and earning major respect within the rap community. Lord Finesse (born Robert Hall) is a legendary MC-turned producer who has produced tracks for Notorious B.I.G. and Dr. Dre. He shopped his demo to various record labels and eventually dropped the first of several records, his 1990 classic Funky Technician. One of the oldest members in the D.I.T.C. crew, Diamond got his first whiff of hip hop DJing for Jazzy Jay of the Zulu Nation in 1979. In the mid-'80s, he was turntable scratching at late-night park parties, often competing with area top DJs. In 1992, this DJ, then a producer, showcased New York City's underground talent and his rap skills on his classic debut Stunts, Blunts & Hip-Hop. Showbiz & A.G. were the first to adopt the do-it-yourself attitude by releasing their 1992 debut EP, Can I Get a Soul Clap, practically out of the trunk of their cars. Showbiz, a name he stolen from an old Richard Pryor record, pioneered taking an instrumental and looping voices over it. His partner A.G. was known as the Bronx's "punchline" rapper. In 1999, A.G. restarted his rap career with his solo CD Dirty Version. Meanwhile, another Bronx native named Buckwild, started producing tracks around 1994. He later delivered melodic beats for rap heavyweights like Fat Joe, Notorious B.I.G., Big L, Mic Geronimo, and Big Pun. But it was his first at-bat, producing tracks for O.C.'s Word Life in 1994, that established him as a vital producer in the underground rap scene. O.C., one of hip hop's most energetic lyricists, was an up-and-coming MC before Word Life. After the album's release, he made numerous guest appearances on other D.I.T.C. members' records while maintaining a low profile. The final member of D.I.T.C. was Big L, a lyrically ferocious MC with raps deadlier than a snakebite and mannerisms cooler than the uptown pimp he claimed to be on records. Calling himself the flamboyant (meaning "rich") MC, he dropped his classic 1994 record Lifestylez ov da Poor and Dangerous on Columbia. He was gearing up for a comeback, with a second CD due for release on Rawkus, when he was slain on February 15, 1999. The crew came together later that year for a memorial concert and recorded a self-titled group record in 2000. Today, their music still stands as a living legacy in hip hop, and will continue to do so for years to come.

Vinyasa, which translates from Sanskrit to “flow” or “move in a special way,” merges movement with the breath. Flowing through sequences of synchronized breathing warms the body, allowing the practitioner to move deeper into postures and, over time, deeper into their personal practice. The class serves students at any level of experience from the yoga novice to the regular practitioner.

Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre.

Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is too focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass.

Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre’s Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.

The CityParks PuppetMobile is the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.
