Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

Taxonomy is a collection of George Boorujy’s dynamic large-scale paintings of North American animals with disarmingly human characteristics, as well as a series of his preliminary clay models and drawings. Inhabitants of New York City and other urban centers often think of themselves as removed from nature, but Boorujy’s hyperrealistic ink-on-paper portraits force us to rethink our relationship with animals and our own place within the environment.

Doors 5PM / Show 6PM

Since forming in 2009, LA-based indie band Grouplove has quickly become one of music’s most exhilarating young acts. By the time they released their 2011 debut full length, Never Trust A Happy Song (Canvasback Music/Atlantic), Grouplove was already a standout at music festivals around the world, including Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Reading & Leeds Festivals, and Glastonbury. Produced by the band’s own Ryan Rabin, Never Trust A Happy Song featured their debut single “Colours.” Hailed by SPIN as “one of the most infectious songs you’re bound to hear,” the song climbed to the top 15 at Alternative radio and continues to be a fan favorite. Their follow-up single “Tongue Tied” garnered even greater success, going to #1 and earning platinum certification, with sales exceeding one million. Grouplove’s raucous live show brought surging crowds to their Coachella and Bonnaroo performances and back-to-back sold out headlining tours. By the end of 2012, “Tongue Tied” was Alternative radio’s second most played song (following only Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know”). The band has brought their undeniable energy to national television with appearances on shows including “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” “The Late Show with David Letterman,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “Conan,” and “Today.” Read More.

Central Park's northern landscapes, less altered by the design and construction of the park, offer one of the few remaining windows into the pre-urban landscape of New York City. The area known as the Fort Landscape includes rocky overlooks that were the sites of fortifications built during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Join us in marking the 200th anniversary of the construction of the War of 1812 fortifications (built in August 1814) with a presentation on the Fort Landscape that integrates recent archaeological discoveries and new findings about its history.

Presenters include: Richard W. Hunter, Ph.D., President and Principal Archaeologist at Hunter Associates; Steven H. Jaffe, Curator and War of 1812 expert at the Museum of the City of New York; and Sara Cedar Miller, Official Historian and Photographer for Central Park Conservancy.

Reception on the Museum Terrace to follow. This program is a partnership between Central Park Conservancy and the Museum of the City of New York. Tickets $25 (MCNY and CPC Members $15). Tickets

In honor of the 200th anniversary of the construction of the War of 1812 fortifications, Central Park Conservancy is focusing attention on a critical but largely unknown part of Central Park: The Fort Landscape. For more programs on the pre-Park history of this area, click here.

Come to Fort Tryon Park and try something new. Join us on Saturdays, Tuesday, and Thursday mornings for one hour of walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels. Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.
