Hudson River Park teams up with The Bowery Presents to bring you a series of exciting concerts on the waterfront.
Doors open at 5:30pm, show starts at 6:30pm

In creating their third full-length album, OneRepublic traveled to Paris, Greece, London, New York, Seattle, and Vancouver to write, record, and immerse themselves in elevating and expanding their already-sweeping sound. Also working at lead singer/songwriter/ keyboardist and GRAMMY® winner Ryan Tedder’s own Patriot Studios in Denver, OneRepublic (whose 2007 smash “Apologize” ranks in the top 50 on the Billboard Hot 100’s All-Time Top Songs list) redefined their approach to rhythm and infused their high-powered rock-pop hybrid with elements of electronic music, gospel, blues, and folk. A bold and boundary-pushing follow-up to 2009’s Waking Up, the resulting Native offers up a surge of stadium-sized rock that’s fiercely beat-driven yet ethereal and intimate.

Mayer Hawthorne grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, just outside of Detroit, and vividly remembers, as a child, driving with his father and tuning the car radio in to the rich soul and jazz history the region provided. “Most of the best music ever made came out of Detroit,” claims the singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, who counts Isaac Hayes, Leroy Hutson, Mike Terry, and Barry White among his influences, but draws the most inspiration from the music of Smokey Robinson, Curtis Mayfield, and the legendary songwriting and production trio of Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland, and Eddie Holland Jr. ~ Ronnie Reese (Wax Poetics / Rollingstone.com)

We’re thrilled and delighted to welcome back local originals TMBG, a Celebrate Brooklyn-favorite for decades, to close out our 35th anniversary season. Acclaimed impresario of non-traditional theater Randy Weiner and director Alfred Preisser team up for a hip-hop themed theater remake of the classic story, “King Kong,” a totally original music/dance/comedy spectacle that radically subverts everything you thought you knew about one of the most famous love stories of all time. Set in the “Bronx is Burning” era of the late 1970s, SummerStage's “King Kong” celebrates the nascent forms of hip-hop music and graffiti art that grew out of the economically stressed South Bronx and went on to become one of the defining, most powerful and profitable artistic movements in the world.

The Gold brothers, the owners of a failing R&B label (Gold Records) are in search of a musical savior. Having heard of a mystic place, a lost world cut off from the rest of civilization by the East River to the south and the Cross Bronx Expressway to the north and enshrouded in the fog of a thousand apartment building fires set by absentee landlords, the legendary South Bronx of 1978 is also the home of the most talented artist alive. Kong is an M.C. and natural genius of rhyme and rhythm whose awesome powers transcend artificial categories and defy the crass and hackneyed formulas of the commercial music industry. In hot pursuit of Kong, the Gold brothers hire a beautiful secretary, Faye Wellington, and go off to capture this force of nature in order to profit from Kong's gifts and share his music with a world desperately in need of inspiration. They load up the Gold family Volvo and journey to deepest, darkest South Bronx to capture Kong and bring him to civilization.

SummerStage Theatre, in collaboration with Preisser and Weiner, have created a fun, outrageous, and thoroughly entertaining work that will be not only be a unique and exciting experience but also a twisted and insightful treatment of the racial stereotypes inherent in the “King Kong” story.

The Randall’s Island Park Alliance, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Made Event are pleased to present FLOW, the annual summer art exhibit along the shoreline at Randall’s Island Park in New York City. FLOW is aimed at fostering appreciation of the shoreline through artistic expression, while calling visitors to interact with and care for the Park’s island environment. Each year, FLOW features five site specific projects by participants in the Bronx Museum’s Artists in the Marketplace (AIM) program for emerging artists.

Randall’s Island Park is a unique and remarkable waterfront resource, located in the East River with views of the Queens, Bronx and Manhattan shorelines. New waterfront pathways run along the 4.5-mile shoreline, which includes almost 9 acres of restored salt marsh and freshwater wetlands. The Park also offers a track & field stadium, a golf center, a 20-court tennis center and dozens of new playing fields, as well as the Harlem River Event Site, home of Made Event’s Electric Zoo, a three-day Labor Day weekend concert event at Randall’s Island which draws local and international DJ artists and audience.

FLOW.13 – this year's third annual exhibition – will be open to the public every day from June-November, and will feature five new site-specific installations, all reflecting and encouraging interaction with the Park’s history and environment. The five installations are located along the southern shoreline of Randall's Island Park.

FLOW is made possible through support from Made Event, proud producers of The Electric Zoo Festival, NYC’s largest electronic dance music festival, held annually at Randall’s Island Park.

The FLOW exhibitions express the confluence of art, music and environment at Randall’s Island Park, in the midst of one of the world’s greatest cities.

The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York is an annual sporting and multicultural event held in August on Meadow Lake in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, New York to celebrate the fifth moon (or the fifth month) of the lunar calendar. In addition to providing audiences with traditional Chinese foods and performances, the festival hosts over 120 dragon boat teams from across North America, making it one of the largest dragon boat festivals in the United States. Depending on the competitive division, teams compete for cash prizes, trophies and other prizes.

The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York features events for the entire family including the NY Championship Race on Saturday and the US Dragon Boat Open Championship Race on Sunday, an opening parade, and youth, women's, sponsors, media, and charity races. Moreover, an impressive arts and entertainment program will showcase some of the best multicultural artists in New York, including the Shaolin Temple Warrior Monks demonstrating Kung Fu, the Drum Spirit of China, and as well as other performers who will perform traditional music and dance from China, Mexico and Peru. Booths located around the main stage area will host folk art and craft demonstrations. And, of course, a food court will serve a culturally diverse menu. Please refer to the boat festival's events schedule page for more information.

<![CDATA[Shuggie Otis / José James / Hiatus Kaiyote / DJ sets by OP! (I Love Vinyl) in association with Giant Step]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/08/11/shuggie-otis-jos-james-hiatus-kaiyote-dj-sets-by-op-i-love-vinyl-in-association-with-giantstep http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/08/11/shuggie-otis-jos-james-hiatus-kaiyote-dj-sets-by-op-i-love-vinyl-in-association-with-giantstep Date: August 11, 2013

Shuggie Otis is a musician’s musician, a reclusive genius from Los Angeles whose name has been spoken in reverential tones by his peers for more than four decades. After a long absence, Shuggie returns as a concert headliner with dates across North America in April 2013. Although an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, Shuggie is best known for writing “Strawberry Letter 23,” a #5 Pop hit for The Brothers Johnson in 1977, and for his guitar playing with Al Kooper, Frank Zappa, Etta James, and Bobby “Blue” Bland, among many others. Under Shuggie’s personal supervision, his highly-acclaimed third and final solo album, 1974′s Inspiration Information, was released on April 16, along with “Wings of Love,” his first new music since 1974.

José James is a trailblazer in the music world for his intoxicating blend of Jazz, Hip-Hop, R&B and Electronica. His new album No Beginning No End is a seamless musical experience that moves between different styles with remarkable fluidity, bound together by his transcendent voice. James is a musical omnivore who resists being pigeonholed, equally at ease on stage with Jazz legend McCoy Tyner as he is in the studio with Electronica pioneer Flying Lotus. The New York Times recently wrote that “James’s cool and confident new album sounds like the result of the black-pop continuum, jazz and soul and Hip-Hop and R&B, slow-cooked for more than 50 years.” NPR marvelled at how he “skirts categories with ease, fitting in with current R&B innovators like Frank Ocean or Miguel, yet maintaining a strong awareness of a lineage that stretches from Ray Charles to Marvin Gaye to Lou Rawls to Maxwell.”

Based in Melbourne, Australia, Hiatus Kaiyote consists of a four-piece band that fuses Neo-Soul, Hip-Hop and Electronic beats along with flavors of Latin, Jazz and Opera, all presented with a cinematic sheen. The band formed in mid-2011, and ever since, they have been racking up accolades, including Breakthrough Artist Of The Year at Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards, and album of the week on Peterson’s radio show on BBC Music 6. Led by enigmatic songwriter, vocalist and guitarist Nai Palm, Hiatus Kaiyote has created intricate compositions, rich with color and mystery, both of this world and of worlds unseen. Their debut release, Tawk Tomahawk, showcases the breadth of the band’s expertise as musicians and attention to detail in the complex arrangements. Ultimately, through the musicians’ symbiosis, they have created an innovative and rare sound, unique in every way.

Known in NYC and around the globe as a purveyor of all things soulful, OP! (I Love Vinyl) is a talented DJ and tastemaker who can hang on just about any dance floor. From Hip-Hop, House, and Classics to Future Soul, UK Funky and South African House, OP! can finesse them all, adopting musical diversity and focusing it into a beautifully cohesive vibe. OP! has been instrumental in shining a light on underground and global soul, and continues to champion its relevance on the world stage.

SummerStage Kids presented by Disney presents Harlem Family Day, a day dedicated to engaging children and their families through engaging performances! Celebrate Hip-Hop culture through gravity- defying dancers, soulful storytelling and a unique Hip-Hop themed musical theater work. With so many different offerings, there will be something for everyone!

Illstyle & Peace Productions is a multicultural dance company that creates works rooted in Hip-Hop blended with an eclectic mix of performance disciplines including tap, DJing and beatboxing. The New York Times has said “Watching these dancers [is] like watching the greatest ballet virtuosos, each fighting gravity and the appearance of effort, and demanding and getting the impossible from the human body.” With a mix of gravity defying moves and upbeat music, families will be captivated by the non-stop action moves of this talented troupe.

Multiple Parents’ Choice Award winner Robbi K’s beautiful voice has graced TV, radio, and live venues and she was a back-up singer for such superstars as Diana Ross, Jewel, and Aretha Franklin. Robbi K sings in many languages and presents interactive, danceable concerts suited for people of all ages and stages.

DJ Stormin' Norman, founder of the Sundae Sermon Festival, was originally part of a groundbreaking DJ collective that brought the famed Thunderstorm Mix on New York’s WBLS 107.5FM to life. By introducing live mixing to daytime radio, he helped set a new precedent in national radio. For over 20 years, he's played major New York clubs, exclusive downtown spots and elite private events worldwide. A Harlem resident for over 15 years, he also DJ/produces Sundae Sermon Radio on WHCR 90.3FM and the Sundae Sermon Festival a summer outdoor event that promotes environmental, educational and recreational family friendly activities in Harlem while dancing under the sun.

Sweet Billy and the Zooloos, a new Hip-Hop musical, is a classic tale of a child banished from his home because his artistic impulses and expressions are different than his community and clash against the established rules and morals. Sweet Billy and his best friend Caprice travel across the US where they meet other misfits and his new friends become family. See who they meet, what they discover and what happens when Sweet Billy and Caprice return to Zoolooland !

Stay tuned for more details on this unique fusion of graffiti art and music as SummerStage travels to famed graffiti Mecca, 5POINTZ for a day celebrating the 40th anniversary of Hip-Hop.

DJ Kool Herc is considered the “The Founder of Hip-Hop Culture.” In the early stages of Hip-Hop music, he brought his sound system to block parties in the Bronx and began playing the brief rhythmic sections of records which would become known as “breaks.” Using the two-turntable set-up of the disco DJs, Kool Herc’s style led to the use of two copies of the same record to elongate the break. This breakbeat DJing, using hard Funk, Rock, and records with Latin percussion, formed the basis of Hip-Hop music. DJ Kool Herc’s music along with his announcements to his dancers, called B-Boys and B-Girls, helped pave the way to what everyone now knows as Hip-Hop.

5POINTZ Aerosol Art Center, Inc., considered to be the world’s premiere “graffiti Mecca,” is an outdoor art exhibition space in Long Island City, New York. Aerosol artists (also known as writers) from around the world paint colorful pieces on the walls of this 200,000 square foot factory building. Initially viewed as a marriage of New York City’s five boroughs, today the 5POINTZ reputation spans five continents uniting aerosol artists / writers in Queens. Celebrating 10 years in 2012, 5POINTZ continues to grow featuring over 1000 pieces each year. The founder and gallery curator is graffiti veteran Jonathan Cohen, best known by his signature tag, “Meres One.”

Fifty years ago, the legendary Stevie Wonder released his first single “Fingertips”, which topped the Billboard Pop Singles and R&B charts and launched his career. In celebration of this seminal release, SummerStage and ImageNation present an evening dedicated to one of Wonder's historic music moments, his Soul Train performance. In this legendary episode of Soul Train, Wonder reinvents the Soul Train theme song. Taking from his inspiration, presenting partner Injoy Enterprises has guest-curated performances by a team of talented musicians and singers who will put their own personal spins on Wonder's hit songs. “Hotter Than July” A Soul Train Tribute to Stevie Wonder will feature: Mika, Gloria Ryann, Asa Lovechild, Darien, Mike Hammond, Chris Robb, and Vivian Sessoms, all backed by the funk band Jesse Fischer & Soul Cycle with DJ Spinna.

DJ Spinna is an extraordinary deejay, producer, re-mixer, and music historian possessing a remarkable mix of musical abilities. He went on to become a cornerstone of Hip-Hop's golden era providing the musical canvas for lyrical giants like Eminem, Mos Def and Talib Kweli. A producer of timeless classics and collaborator with Hip-Hop legends like Brand Nubian, Masta Ace, Guru, and The Jungle Brothers, he also built a reputation as a crucial re-mixer reworking major label hits for the likes of De La Soul, Mary J. Blige, George Michael and a hard-driving soulful remix of Michael Jackson’s “We're Almost There.” A protégé of Stevie Wonder, audiences will often find him travelling and performing with the artist.

“Hotter Than July” is a rare BBC documentary that examines Stevie Wonder's musical insight and preparation for his 1980-1981 USA tour. Infused with personal interviews, backstage antics and an appearance at the Washington Rally to celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr and more, this film gives intimate insight into one of music's most celebrated stars.

The summer classes will be an introduction to the foundational elements of Yang family Taijiquan, including the first section of the long form. In addition to this, we will be studying the eight Zhan Zhuang Qigong postures of Yiquan to complement our understanding of correct body alignment and connectedness of movement in Taijiquan.

Instructor Joh Morton has been studying Chinese Martial Arts for over seven years and has competed nationally and internationally in Kung Fu and Tai Chi. He learned Yang family Taijiquan from Master Dug Corpolongo, and has continued to study with him for over six years, receiving certification to teach the long form in 2011. In addition to Taijiquan, he has studied Yiquan, Shuai Jiao, Northern Longfist Kung Fu, Southern White Crane, and Xingyiquan. His focus is on understanding and incorporating traditional theories of Qigong and Chinese martial theory with modern principles of body mechanics and physics.

The Land Art Generator Initiative: Freshkills Park is an exhibition of the top 25 designs selected out of 250 submissions from around the globe by artists, architects, designers, engineers, landscape architects, and more. LAGI 2012 was an ideas competition to design a site-specific public artwork that, in addition to its conceptual beauty, has the ability to harness energy cleanly from nature and convert it into electricity for the utility grid. At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park will be almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in over 100 years. The transformation of what was formerly the world’s largest landfill into a productive and beautiful cultural destination will make the park a symbol of renewal and an expression of how our society can restore balance to its landscape. The top three submissions not only heighten the beauty of the surrounding park land but also provide a gateway into a greater discussion about the preservation of the environment.

Van Cortlandt House Museum invites children to come along on a weeklong discovery of history in their backyard at the “Adventures in Time” Summer History Camp.

While on their “Adventure in Time” at Van Cortlandt House, campers will discover the everyday life of an 18th century child as they play the Van Cortlandt children’s favorite games, try on period clothing, and make 18th century toys. Campers will also lend a hand with plantation chores such as churning butter, gathering wood and hauling water.

“Adventures in Time” will also explore the early years of the Revolutionary War as campers become soldiers in General George Washington’s army. All aspects of military life will be covered from “enlisting” in the army, for which they will receive a bonus, to pitching a wedge tent and setting up camp. Campers will also learn military drills, and hike up to the top of Vault Hill on reconnaissance just like their 18th century counterparts who were stationed at the Van Cortlandt’s plantation during the Revolutionary War.

Campers must bring their own brown bag lunch each day but snacks and water are provided.

"Adventures in Time" Summer History Camp is open to all children with a sense of adventure who have completed 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th grade in the Spring of 2013. We encourage early enrollment, as camp space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis. To enroll, call Van Cortlandt House Museum or e-mail for a camp application.

Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre.

Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is too focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass.

Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre’s Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.

The CityParks PuppetMobile is the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

Invasive Pigments is a series of watercolor-like paintings which explores the migration and proliferation of weeds and other “unintentional” plants in tandem with human movement. Artist Ellie Irons created colors by extracting pigments from these local, invasive plants, and uses them to construct map-like portraits to illustrate the species’ movement into local ecosystems
