NYC Parks and Bike New York are proud to present Learn to Ride classes. In these free classes, we’ll teach children the fundamentals of bicycling, preparing them for years of safe and confident riding.

This class teaches a safe, easy, effective way to learn to ride. Using this “balance first” method, parents help get their children rolling while the child does most of the work. Participants learn the basics of balancing, starting, stopping, and steering a bike. Most people learn to ride their bike while taking the class, but even if they don’t, they will leave with an easy, hands-free, crash-free, and low-stress way to learn to ride.

Participants must bring their own bike and helmet. To register, please visit the Bike New York webpage.

Join us for an adventure in “green” bookmaking! Spend the afternoon exploring Freshkills Park and joining in a workshop with artist and instructor Susan Mills in conjunction with the ongoing project UnCommon Pages. You’ll learn about bookmaking, habitat restoration, and recycling in its purest form.

The Freshkills Park site is in a continual phase change from landfill to park, a conceptual and physical reclamation. In July 2014, Susan and workshop participants harvested the invasive plant species Phragmites (also known as the common reed) on site at the park, then Susan undertook the labor-intensive process of transforming this raw material into paper sheets. Over a series of workshops like this one, these sheets are being bound as the cover stock for 2,000 passport-sized Field Notebooks.

Join a curatorial fellow for an exhibition tour designed to draw visitors into a lively discussion about the relationship between art and nature.

In the main gallery, Chris Doyle: Landscape Fictions brings to life the Hudson River. An artist whose sense of craft verges on the obsessive, Doyle presents three animations from a decades-long practice animating the natural world that exists on the urban fringes. This exhibition accompanies The Lightening, a site-specific project installed in the Aquatic Garden that combines mirrored surfaces with backlit animations into an artwork that changes as the day turns into night. At the same time, in the Sunroom Project Space, Kiran Chandra explores the “swarm” as a social form through a sculptural and sonic interpretation of Eugene Marais’ The Soul of the White Ant.

Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

Browse for the perfect gift for Mom and meet special in-store vendors Clothe My Soul and Priya Himatsingka. Brooklyn-based artist Jean Lugrin Ferlesch created Clothe My Soul as a way to use embroidery to tell her personal stories. Each piece begins with a hand-drawn sketch. Once scanned into a computer and digitized, it is created and assembled in her studio using rayon thread and dupioni silk, linen or leather. Born in Calcutta, Priya Himatsingka grew up in a family of textile designers, though her materials of choice have been jewelry and metals. Each piece of her jewelry, handmade using mainly silver and high-karat gold, is stylishly simple. She also offers a collection featuring rosecut diamonds—smoky-colored stones custom-cut for her studio.

Catch-and-release fishing is a great way to get outdoors and discover nature just a few blocks from home. Our experienced Rangers teach the ethics of fishing and the ecology of our waterways on every fishing program.

Seining programs, which use nets to catch fish and crustaceans close to shore, are great for kids of all ages.

All equipment is provided, and most are first-come, first-served. Participation in a mandatory safety review led by a trained Ranger is required.

Awesome Asana Yoga is an hour-long exercise in body stretching and mind cleansing taught by registered yoga teacher Chelsea Best. As Chelsea says, “Awesome Asana offers a unique yogic journey, linking breath with movement in a meditative Vinyasa Flow class style designed to awaken the spirit and bring the body and mind back to a place of peace.” The class is Open Level Vinyasa, and is moderately challenging.

MJM’s Awesome Asana is part of Chelsea’s “Localize Yoga” project, which aims to make yoga affordable and accessible – to present it “as a possibility, rather than as a luxury” – to the denizens of upper Manhattan. The class is $5, and mats, should you need one, are provided.
