Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form that has evolved over centuries into an exciting combination of martial arts, dance, music, and acrobatics. Capoeira was developed in Brazil, but its history extends to Africa and tribes from Angola. Slaves living on Brazilian Plantations who weren’t allowed to openly practice traditional forms of self-defense developed an ingenious method of disguising their training by combining it with dance-like movements, singing, and the rhythms of primitive instruments. Some of capoeira’s benefits include strength, flexibility, stamina, overall fitness and confidence. Benefits of capoeira for kids include promoting social interaction and sense of belonging, building confidence, discipline and self esteem, promoting a healthy lifestyle so children become active, and healthy, and develop cultural awareness and tolerance. Wear comfortable clothing.

Jimmy Eat World got their start in 1994 and has gained a reputation for being a band of great perseverance and hard work. Since the 1999 release of their breakthrough debut album Clarity, they’ve sold millions of records, have had numerous top ten singles at Modern Rock Radio, appeared on Saturday Night Live and have toured with Foo Fighters, Green Day and Weezer. Jimmy Eat World’s eighth and latest studio album, Damage, is set to be released in June.

Knoxville, Tennessee trio Royal Bangs peddle in the sort of noise pop that’s insidiously catchy enough to get you whistling in inappropriate situations while also being rough around the edges enough to attract the interest of The Black Keys’ Patrick Carney, who released their 2008 debut We Breed Champions on his label. Since their nascent days as a high school rock trio, the band has released three full length records (including 2011’s Flux Outside), rehearsed in a converted methadone clinic, made their national television debut and knocked about the festival circuit. Royal Bangs are now working on album number four and looking forward to, once again, testing their mettle (and perhaps some new material) on the road.

Born in Philadelphia, Bilal is a schooled musician and dynamic live performer whose artistry draws from Jazz, Soul, and Hip-Hop. Bilal has long been intrigued by the possibilities of fusing together art and music. His 2001 debut album, First Born Second, sold over 300,000 copies and announced that Bilal was an artist to watch. His 2013 release, A Love Surreal, reached #1 on the ITunes R&B charts and received rave reviews from USA Today, People, SPIN and Paste Magazine. The New York Times called A Love Surreal: “a cycle of slow-burning songs about love — from infatuation and romance through estrangement, loneliness and renewal, from seduction and longing to philosophical serenity. With lush, glimmering keyboards and electronics, lean indie-rock guitars or Robert Glasper’s limpid Jazz piano the songs tease and insinuate.”

Vivian Green received her first professional songwriting credit when Boyz II Men recorded her song, "Dear God" on their platinum-selling album Evolution. Her first album, A Love Story established Green as one of R&B's most celebrated new artists, spawning the urban dance hits "Emotional Rollercoaster" and "Fanatic." She broke new musical ground on her sophomore effort Vivian, which produced the singles "Gotta Go, Gotta Leave" and "I Like It But I Don't Need It." She has won rave reviews in such outlets as People, Rolling Stone and The New York Times. 2010's Beautiful, recorded after an almost five-year hiatus, boasted some of Vivian’s most personally charged, emotionally nuanced work to date.

A decade evolved from their debut at 2003′s New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Dumpstaphunk offers fans an unforgettable live experience steeped in the Big Easy tradition of a good time. The quintet features Ivan Neville on vocals, B3 and Clav, the double bass attack and soulful voices of Tony Hall and Nick Daniels III, Ian Neville on guitar, and the monster addition of Nikki Glaspie on drums and vocals.

From annual performances at New Orleans’ Jazz Fest — “The colossal low end and filthy grooves they threw down from the Gentilly Stage must have set a Jazz Fest record for baddest bass jams ever.” (Bass Player Magazine, 2012) — to music rooms and festivals across the nation (Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, All Good, High Sierra, Summer Camp, Hangout, Jam Cruise and Outside Lands), Dumpstaphunk continues to spread an unmistakably New Orleans groove with hard-hitting performances that dare listeners not to move.

Dumpstaphunk’s summer 2013 release, Dirty Word, re-imagines their genre, holding true to the opinionated, vintage funk of Sly & the Family Stone and Parliament Funkadelic, but with a modern edge that forays into gospel, blues, second-line, R&B and straight-up rock n’ roll. True to New Orleans tradition, Dumpsta’s friends and family Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, Rebirth Brass Band, Skerik, the Grooveline Horns, Art Neville, Ani DiFranco and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers kick the Dirty Word sessions up a notch.

In Sugar, Miguel, a Dominican baseball pitcher from the small town of San Pedro De Macorís, single-mindedly focuses on training at a pro baseball academy – as so many in his country do –awaiting his chance to graduate to the minor leagues in the U.S., and to help pull his family out of poverty. At 19, he gets his break – a call-up to spring training for a team in Iowa – but what happens when his game falters? And were all the sacrifices worth it? A beautifully filmed, exquisitely acted drama from Brooklyn filmmakers Boden & Fleck that takes a bracing new look at a fractured American dream.
Outdoor Cinema is an annual international festival of open-air cinema, music, dance, and food. It includes eight weeks of films at Socrates Sculpture Park, taking place on Wednesday evenings through August 21. The festival kicks off on July 3rd with a new American film to welcome Independence Day weekend: Our Nixon, a feature-length documentary directed by Penny Lane, first debuted in March at SXSW and to be released in theaters in July 2013. Outdoor Cinema 2013 features eight international titles from Chad, the Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Mexico, Romania, South Korea, Turkey, and the United States.
In addition to the films, which are presented in their original language (with English subtitles), each evening will feature regional cuisine from neighborhood restaurants and performances by local musicians and dancers that celebrate the culture of the film. Pre-screening performances begin at 7:00pm and films begin at sunset (weather permitting). From 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m., we will also offer free sunset paddling sessions from the Socrates Sculpture Park beach at Hallets Cove, just north of the park.

Acclaimed impresario of non-traditional theater Randy Weiner and director Alfred Preisser team up for a hip-hop themed theater remake of the classic story, “King Kong,” a totally original music/dance/comedy spectacle that radically subverts everything you thought you knew about one of the most famous love stories of all time. Set in the “Bronx is Burning” era of the late 1970s, SummerStage's “King Kong” celebrates the nascent forms of hip-hop music and graffiti art that grew out of the economically stressed South Bronx and went on to become one of the defining, most powerful and profitable artistic movements in the world.

The Gold brothers, the owners of a failing R&B label (Gold Records) are in search of a musical savior. Having heard of a mystic place, a lost world cut off from the rest of civilization by the East River to the south and the Cross Bronx Expressway to the north and enshrouded in the fog of a thousand apartment building fires set by absentee landlords, the legendary South Bronx of 1978 is also the home of the most talented artist alive. Kong is an M.C. and natural genius of rhyme and rhythm whose awesome powers transcend artificial categories and defy the crass and hackneyed formulas of the commercial music industry. In hot pursuit of Kong, the Gold brothers hire a beautiful secretary, Faye Wellington, and go off to capture this force of nature in order to profit from Kong's gifts and share his music with a world desperately in need of inspiration. They load up the Gold family Volvo and journey to deepest, darkest South Bronx to capture Kong and bring him to civilization.

SummerStage Theatre, in collaboration with Preisser and Weiner, have created a fun, outrageous, and thoroughly entertaining work that will be not only be a unique and exciting experience but also a twisted and insightful treatment of the racial stereotypes inherent in the “King Kong” story.

The Land Art Generator Initiative: Freshkills Park is an exhibition of the top 25 designs selected out of 250 submissions from around the globe by artists, architects, designers, engineers, landscape architects, and more. LAGI 2012 was an ideas competition to design a site-specific public artwork that, in addition to its conceptual beauty, has the ability to harness energy cleanly from nature and convert it into electricity for the utility grid. At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park will be almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in over 100 years. The transformation of what was formerly the world’s largest landfill into a productive and beautiful cultural destination will make the park a symbol of renewal and an expression of how our society can restore balance to its landscape. The top three submissions not only heighten the beauty of the surrounding park land but also provide a gateway into a greater discussion about the preservation of the environment.

The Randall’s Island Park Alliance, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Made Event are pleased to present FLOW, the annual summer art exhibit along the shoreline at Randall’s Island Park in New York City. FLOW is aimed at fostering appreciation of the shoreline through artistic expression, while calling visitors to interact with and care for the Park’s island environment. Each year, FLOW features five site specific projects by participants in the Bronx Museum’s Artists in the Marketplace (AIM) program for emerging artists.

Randall’s Island Park is a unique and remarkable waterfront resource, located in the East River with views of the Queens, Bronx and Manhattan shorelines. New waterfront pathways run along the 4.5-mile shoreline, which includes almost 9 acres of restored salt marsh and freshwater wetlands. The Park also offers a track & field stadium, a golf center, a 20-court tennis center and dozens of new playing fields, as well as the Harlem River Event Site, home of Made Event’s Electric Zoo, a three-day Labor Day weekend concert event at Randall’s Island which draws local and international DJ artists and audience.

FLOW.13 – this year's third annual exhibition – will be open to the public every day from June-November, and will feature five new site-specific installations, all reflecting and encouraging interaction with the Park’s history and environment. The five installations are located along the southern shoreline of Randall's Island Park.

FLOW is made possible through support from Made Event, proud producers of The Electric Zoo Festival, NYC’s largest electronic dance music festival, held annually at Randall’s Island Park.

The FLOW exhibitions express the confluence of art, music and environment at Randall’s Island Park, in the midst of one of the world’s greatest cities.

Join us for the 14th season of our free, outdoor film series! This year's theme, "With Love From..." tours cities from around the globe with a lineup of fantastic films.

DJs hit the stage at 6:00pm and movies begin at sundown.

LINEUP:

July 11 - Ferris Bueller's Day Off
High School truant extraordinaire, Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) plots to take one last grand day off before graduation, touring the streets on Chicago in a Ferrari “borrowed” from a friend’s father while staying one step ahead of principal Rooney (Jeffrey Jones). A master of capturing the trials and triumphs of teenage freedom, Director John Hughes blends satire, social commentary, and pure fun. [PG-13] Short film: Creep by Sharif Anthony. DJ: Still Life

July 18 - Enter the Dragon
Under the guise of an international martial arts competition, Bruce Lee and partners John Saxon and Jim Kelly infiltrate the hidden island fortress of a powerful drug syndicate off the coast of Hong Kong. Perhaps the seminal Kung Fu film of the 1970’s, Lee’s final film features the martial arts master at the height of his career with superbly staged fight scenes in a variety of styles. [R] Short film: Catnip: Egress to Oblivion by Jason Willis DJ: Hahn Solo

July 25 - Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
When young Charlie Bucket finds the final golden ticket wrapped inside a Wonka Bar, he is granted access to the secret mysteries of Mr. Wonka’s (Gene Wilder) chocolate factory. The 1971 musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book whisks five kids into a world of pure imagination complete with chocolate rivers, fizzy lifting drink, and singing Umpa Lumpas. [G] Short film: Irish Folk Furniture by Tony Donoghue DJ: Ayres

August 1 - 8 Mile
Rapper Eminem made his acting debut in this semi-autobiographical journey of a white kid trying to make it as a hip-hop artist in the bombed out heart of inner city Detroit. After freezing up during an important rap battle, the young rapper, Rabbit, thinks he is at a dead end, but his girlfriend (Britney Murphy) helps him build up the courage to take one last shot. [R] Short film: Until the Quiet Comes by Kahlil Joseph DJ: Who Am I

August 8 - Roman Holiday
Princess Ann (Audrey Hepburn) is an unsatisfied princess who, in an attempt to find her freedom, winds up stumbling into the apartment of reporter – and bachelor – Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck). The two dodge her secret service guards all throughout the city while giving the Princess a taste of the real world. [NR] Short film: How She Slept At Night by Lilli Carré DJ: $mall ¢hange

August 15 - Rocky
After the top boxing contender drops out, small time debt collector Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) gets a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship. Set on the eve of the Philadelphian Bicentennial, Rocky took Hollywood by surprise, as the rags-to-riches classic creamed box offices and won the Academy Award for best picture, in addition to featuring one of film history’s most iconic training montages. [PG] Short film: Marcel, King of Tervuren by Tom Schroeder DJ: Emch

August 22 - Vertigo
Retired private eye, Scottie Ferguson (Jimmy Stewart) battles acrophobia in one final case, trailing the enchanting Madeleine Elster (Kim Novak). Hailed as one of Alfred Hitchcock’s greatest works, winding through the streets of San Francisco in dazzlingly rich Technicolor, Vertigo weaves a dizzying story of love and obsession. [PG] Short film: My Favorite Picture of You by Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin DJ: Geko Jones

August 29 - PUBLIC VOTE!
As is tradition, Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy and Syfy invite the public to vote on the last film of the summer starting on August 22. Check out the contenders below (rained-out films will also be entered into the running):

  • Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (Benicio del Toro) take on the spiraling psychedelic safari of 1970s Las Vegas on a savage journey to the heart of the American Dream. Terry Gilliam’s highly stylized trip of a film captures all the whit, humor and horror of Hunter S. Thompson’s classic work of Gonzo journalism. [R]
  • Good Will Hunting
At one of Boston’s top universities, MIT janitor Will Hunting (Matt Damon) is discovered after solving one of the schools most vexing math equations, but the future of this brilliant mind depends on the guidance of therapist Sean Maguire (Robin Williams). [R]
  • Lost in Translation
Two lonely strangers, Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) and Bob Harris (Bill Murray), forge a touching and unexpected friendship while adventuring through high-speed Tokyo in Sofia Coppola’s Oscar-winning film. [R]

Although Tye Tribbett has toured and performed with some of the biggest artists in the secular world, including Justin Timberlake, Whitney Houston, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Elton John and Jill Scott, this GRAMMY nominated artist’s musical talents lie in the realm of Gospel music. Tribbett passionately spreads the goodness of God through his music. His musical ministry’s songs use the “buildups of rock power ballads, the slow strut of P-Funk and churchy, organ-driven call-and-response” to touch the hearts of many, according to The New York Times. With his solo debut at #1 on the Billboard Gospel chart, his album Fresh positions Tribbett to step forth boldly with a new message of renewal. According to the Washington Post, this “wondrous album” highlights Tribbett’s songwriting skills as he wrote or co-wrote each song, showcasing a variety of powerful music, including the first single “Fresh.” Tribbett’s previous chart-topping albums, Victory Live! and Stand Out! featured his former musical ensemble and gospel choir, Greater Anointing.

When Tasha Cobbs took the stage at Northview Christian Church in Montgomery, Alabama in 2012, she did so neither as a nationally renowned vocalist, nor as a recording artist making her major-label debut. Instead, with microphone in hand, she ascended the platform prepared to do what she had done every week since her teenage years—lead the congregation into worship. It is no surprise then that the result of her effort, the album, Grace stands as a moving example of the raw power of a live worship experience. The eight-song project reveals Tasha at her best as a psalmist, songwriter, and minister.

“Diablo Love” is a fantastical love story featuring live music that re-imagines songs made famous by American Blues singer, guitarist and harmonica player, Howlin' Wolf along with original compositions by Tomás Doncker. This production provides audiences with a masterful live soundtrack of Blues/Soul music and sets the stage for a dynamic performance.

What would you do for love? In the dark alleys of Hell's Kitchen, Smoke, a lost soul, finds himself face to face with Mephi, the demon devil he made a deal with two years prior. She's there to collect his soul. In order to spare his own horrific demise, Smoke must find a willing person to swap spots with him, and as a result comes upon Emma, a fledgling Harlem Gospel singer from a troubled background with big dreams of fame. As Emma works through the trials and tribulations of erecting a career with her group, Smoke appears with big promises and a plan for fame and fortune. The two embark on a joint quest to achieve both of their missions, and what once began as a task for Smoke to find his replacement quickly takes a complicated turn as he must decide between unconditional love and Diablo love.
