Acclaimed impresario of non-traditional theater Randy Weiner and director Alfred Preisser team up for a hip-hop themed theater remake of the classic story, “King Kong,” a totally original music/dance/comedy spectacle that radically subverts everything you thought you knew about one of the most famous love stories of all time. Set in the “Bronx is Burning” era of the late 1970s, SummerStage's “King Kong” celebrates the nascent forms of hip-hop music and graffiti art that grew out of the economically stressed South Bronx and went on to become one of the defining, most powerful and profitable artistic movements in the world.

The Gold brothers, the owners of a failing R&B label (Gold Records) are in search of a musical savior. Having heard of a mystic place, a lost world cut off from the rest of civilization by the East River to the south and the Cross Bronx Expressway to the north and enshrouded in the fog of a thousand apartment building fires set by absentee landlords, the legendary South Bronx of 1978 is also the home of the most talented artist alive. Kong is an M.C. and natural genius of rhyme and rhythm whose awesome powers transcend artificial categories and defy the crass and hackneyed formulas of the commercial music industry. In hot pursuit of Kong, the Gold brothers hire a beautiful secretary, Faye Wellington, and go off to capture this force of nature in order to profit from Kong's gifts and share his music with a world desperately in need of inspiration. They load up the Gold family Volvo and journey to deepest, darkest South Bronx to capture Kong and bring him to civilization.

SummerStage Theatre, in collaboration with Preisser and Weiner, have created a fun, outrageous, and thoroughly entertaining work that will be not only be a unique and exciting experience but also a twisted and insightful treatment of the racial stereotypes inherent in the “King Kong” story.

The Land Art Generator Initiative: Freshkills Park is an exhibition of the top 25 designs selected out of 250 submissions from around the globe by artists, architects, designers, engineers, landscape architects, and more. LAGI 2012 was an ideas competition to design a site-specific public artwork that, in addition to its conceptual beauty, has the ability to harness energy cleanly from nature and convert it into electricity for the utility grid. At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park will be almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in over 100 years. The transformation of what was formerly the world’s largest landfill into a productive and beautiful cultural destination will make the park a symbol of renewal and an expression of how our society can restore balance to its landscape. The top three submissions not only heighten the beauty of the surrounding park land but also provide a gateway into a greater discussion about the preservation of the environment.

The Randall’s Island Park Alliance, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Made Event are pleased to present FLOW, the annual summer art exhibit along the shoreline at Randall’s Island Park in New York City. FLOW is aimed at fostering appreciation of the shoreline through artistic expression, while calling visitors to interact with and care for the Park’s island environment. Each year, FLOW features five site specific projects by participants in the Bronx Museum’s Artists in the Marketplace (AIM) program for emerging artists.

Randall’s Island Park is a unique and remarkable waterfront resource, located in the East River with views of the Queens, Bronx and Manhattan shorelines. New waterfront pathways run along the 4.5-mile shoreline, which includes almost 9 acres of restored salt marsh and freshwater wetlands. The Park also offers a track & field stadium, a golf center, a 20-court tennis center and dozens of new playing fields, as well as the Harlem River Event Site, home of Made Event’s Electric Zoo, a three-day Labor Day weekend concert event at Randall’s Island which draws local and international DJ artists and audience.

FLOW.13 – this year's third annual exhibition – will be open to the public every day from June-November, and will feature five new site-specific installations, all reflecting and encouraging interaction with the Park’s history and environment. The five installations are located along the southern shoreline of Randall's Island Park.

FLOW is made possible through support from Made Event, proud producers of The Electric Zoo Festival, NYC’s largest electronic dance music festival, held annually at Randall’s Island Park.

The FLOW exhibitions express the confluence of art, music and environment at Randall’s Island Park, in the midst of one of the world’s greatest cities.

Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre.

Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is too focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass.

Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre’s Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.

The CityParks PuppetMobile is the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

<![CDATA[The Bowery Presents: Disclosure / TNGHT / Julio Bashmore]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/08/06/the-bowery-presents-disclosure-tnght-julio-bashmore http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/08/06/the-bowery-presents-disclosure-tnght-julio-bashmore Date: August 6, 2013

The British duo, Disclosure, consists of brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence (aged just 20 and 17 respectively). In a New York Times profile of Disclosure, the brothers talked about how “they arrived at their sound through pure reverse engineering, growing up listening to the generation of musicians making what could be broadly described as post-2-step, and then working their way backward.” Having racked up hundreds of thousands of Soundcloud plays with their remixes for Jessie Ware and Emeli Sande, the duo is currently working towards a much-anticipated debut album. With their debut EP Carnival / I Love That…You Know receiving over 50,000 downloads in over 150 countries to date, they have proved that their distinctively British style of music has true global appeal. Forget age limitations and lazy categorizations, Disclosure is simply the sound of electronic music – past, present, and future.

TNGHT is the sound of two of the very best new producers in the industry amplifying each other. Pooling their talents as TNGHT, they are helping to redefine the state of new pop, dance music and Hip-Hop in a wholly fresh fusion. Born of this A.D.D generation looking towards the internet but equally born of vinyl culture, sample chopping and digging, they have emerged to take the helm of Hip-Hop and Pop music.

It might seem counterintuitive for a producer to detach themselves from one of the planet’s most thriving music scenes, but in the case of Julio Bashmore, that’s exactly what he did growing up in bass music hotbed. Julio may have appeared to burst on to the scene in late 2009, but the lead up to the Julio Bashmore EP was essentially a lifetime in the making. Julio’s interest in electronic music began in earnest after hearing Daft Punk’s “Da Funk”. By the time he was old enough to experience club culture firsthand, Julio had made the realization that DJing was the true vehicle in which to deliver his music.

Jungle Brothers is an American Hip-Hop group that pioneered the fusion of Jazz and Hip-Hop and also became the first Hip-Hop group to use a house-music producer. The group began performing in the mid-1980s and released its first album, Straight Out the Jungle, in 1988. With Afrocentric lyrics and innovative beats, the Jungle Brothers were critically acclaimed and soon joined the influential Native Tongues collective.

My Grandfathers Circus

"My grandfather grew up in South Dakota during the great depression. This fifty-five minute show is based on his stories and how he had fun during a very adverse time creating a circus out of the dust bowl. Every day farm objects come to life and find excitement in unexpected places. This show was written for children in the Gulf Region post hurricane Katrina and has been performed at the White House, the National Storytelling Convention, and for the Mass MoCA museum. Circus arts performed in this show include and are not limited to juggling, slack rope walking, prop manipulation, unicycle, and many more."
