Rockaway!, a free public arts festival sponsored by the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) to celebrate the reopening of Fort Tilden and recognize the ongoing recovery of the Rockaway peninsula, opens June 29 and continues through September 1, 2014. Invited by the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA), an association of artists based in and around the Rockaways, and the JBRPC, MoMA PS1 has assisted and supported the conception of this festival.

One component of the festival is a group exhibition organized in collaboration with the Honolulu Biennial on the grounds of the newly restored Rockaway Beach Surf Club on Beach 87th Street in Rockaway Beach. Following Hurricane Sandy, the Surf Club was the one of the largest relief centers on the peninsula; their organization facilitated and directed over 5,000 volunteers, with major contributions from MoMA PS1. The exhibition celebrates the efforts of the Rockaway community of surfers and artists in rebuilding their neighborhood.

Neon Trees’ new album Pop Psychology on Island Records is an upbeat collection of sleek, modern alternative pop powered by singer-songwriter Tyler Glenn’s bright melodies, huge choruses, and witty lyrics about the challenges of finding love in the digital age. With disarming honesty, songs like ”Love In the 21st Century,” “Text Me In The Morning,” “I Love You, But I Hate Your Friends,” and first single “Sleeping With A Friend” cleverly capture the millennial concerns referenced in the titles and deliver them in impeccably shiny sonic packages, thanks to the band’s performances and production by Glenn’s long-time friend and songwriting collaborator Tim Pagnotta. Style-wise, Glenn feels that Pop Psychology blends sounds from the Provo, Utah-based quartet’s previous two albums, 2010’s guitar-pop-driven Habits and 2012’s electro-fueled New Wave- inspired Picture Show. “I think this is the first record where we combine both and really sound like Neon Trees throughout the entire album,” he says.

Songwriting has always been an emotional outlet for Glenn, who grew up next door to Chris Allen in Murrieta, Calif., and followed him to Provo when Allen moved there for college. Neon Trees honed their New Wave-tinged sound locally before being chosen to open for The Killers in 2008. Shortly after, they signed to Mercury Records and released Habits, which spawned the platinum- selling breakthrough single “Animal.” The track peaked at No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart, No. 2 on the Rock Songs chart, and was featured on Glee. Its success led to multiple high-profile TV appearances, and tours with Thirty Seconds To Mars, Panic! At The Disco, My Chemical Romance, and Duran Duran. The band’s ascending profile smoothed the way for their next album, Picture Show, which debuted at No. 17 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart and featured the platinum-selling Top 10 single “Everybody Talks,” which cemented Neon Trees as modern rock contenders.

Neon Trees are Tyler Glenn, Chris Allen, Elaine Bradley and Branden Campbell.

The company creates critically acclaimed dance productions, which are renowned for their integration of stimulating choreographic forms, arresting musical scores and theatrical invention. Led by award winning Artistic Director and Choreographer Shaun Parker, his work is described as ‘so cutting edge it actually wanders off the edge of any single-word definition…’ The company will perform 'SPILL', an outdoor, site specific, highly physical and engaging live performance featuring four agile and charismatic performers who blaze a colorful trail across swings, slides, see-saws and round-a-bouts. Using existing children’s playground equipment as the set design, SPILL has been created specifically for public spaces, aiming to take storytelling through dance and physical expression to the heart of our local communities. Created by Artistic Director/Choreographer Shaun Parker and composer Nick Wales, SPILL was originally commissioned by DanceXchange and the International Dance Festival Birmingham as part of the London Cultural Olympiad’s Dancing with the Games.

Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

Tony Vega is a Grammy nominated internationally known salsa singer and bandleader. Vega was born in the town of Salinas, Puerto Rico into a family of musicians and therefore learned how to play the bongos and conga at an early age. Vega was one of the new breed of artists emerging from Puerto Rico salsa in the '80s, and has worked with many of the biggest stars of salsa, from pioneers of the genre, to the present. It has been said that " Tony Vega defines its music as salsa class and swing with a fresh sound , modern, uncomplicated , with a romantic touch and traditional roots." Vega's beautiful voice and his innate ability to play contemporary salsa in the best tradition of the classic soneros have been polished and refined over his 19 years as an artist, first as a drummer and then as a singer. Until now, Vega took part in the recording of 17 albums , including the last four with his own band and record company RMM .

Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist and lyricist Andrew Bird picked up his first violin at the age of four and spent his formative years soaking up classical repertoire completely by ear. As a teen Bird became interested in a variety of styles including early jazz, country blues and folk music, synthesizing them into his unique brand of pop. Since beginning his recording career in1997 he has released 11 albums and played thousands of shows. Bird has gone on to record with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and perform at New York’s Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, and festivals worldwide. Recently Bird composed his first ever film score for the movie Norman (hailed as “a probing, thoughtful score” by The New York Times), contributed to the soundtrack of The Muppets and collaborated with inventor Ian Schneller on Sonic Arboretum, an installation that debuted at New York’s Guggenheim Museum and exhibited at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art. In 2012, he released two albums, Break It Yourself, and Hands of Glory, an acoustic companion album. He’s recently been performing with Tift Merritt, developing a children’s TV show, and writing for his next album.

Originally from Cape Anne, Massachusetts, Luke Temple moved to the North West, sleeping rough in the woods, working in a candy store and as a janitor at a suburban mall. All of his aimlessness lasted a year and half. He enrolled in school of the Museum of Fine Arts and spent five years painting portraits, after which Luke moved to New York. As painting drifted from the foreground, songs started to emerge. After recording two critically acclaimed albums to little commercial reception, Luke was at the point of quitting a career in music. In 2008, feeling free in his new state, he made what would become the first Here We Go Magic album, forming the band and releasing the self-titled debut in 2009. Luke kept busy touring and recording two more full lengths and an EP. Since Here We Go Magic's 2012 release, the Nigel Gordich-produced “A Different Ship,” Luke has returned to his original solo ideas.
