Steven High, executive director of the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, FL will discuss with Leonard Ursachi, Brooklyn-based and Romanian-born artist, how Ursachi’s Fat Boy sculpture was produced in the artist’s studio, its meaning, and the exhibitions that followed in both Sarasota and Brooklyn.

Ursachi based Fat Boy on a classical Western putto, or male child often depicted in Renaissance and Baroque artworks. “Since antiquity,” he says, "putti have been malleable signifiers, representing, among other things, Eros, panic, abandon, and joy. Fat Boy’s title derives not only from his plump, cherubic face, but also from the WWII atomic bombs, Little Boy and Fat Man, giving the sculpture twin references to Eros and war.”

Fat Boy was first exhibited at the John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida, and is currently on display in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. The companion exhibition, Behind Fat Boy, was featured at Brooklyn Public Library this past summer.

And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Starting last year on Alice Austen’s birthday, the Alice Austen House began a project documenting the grounds and waterfront from Austen’s home, Clear Comfort. Each day since then the house, grounds, and activities of the site have been documented, much like Alice Austen did over a hundred years ago. The museum will present an installation of nearly 200 snapshots capturing the daily life of this historic site and invite visitors to participate in the project.

Alice Austen Everyday is on view September 26 – December 30, 2015 and shown in conjunction with the museum’s 30th Anniversary exhibition “Becoming Clear Comfort: History of a Landmark," tracing the history of the house. Recently tagged images will also be on view, presented on an iPad in the gallery. Exhibition s on view during museum hours: Tuesday - Sunday 11:00am-5:00pm.

Be like Alice Austen: Upload images taken during the day to social media using the hashtag #aliceausteneveryday. Not on social media? Email photos with title, date, and name of photographer to info@aliceausten.org to be included in the project.

Harlem is the birthplace and residence of several HRO band members, and it’s why the members chose their band name to be Harlem Renaissance Orchestra. Not only that, the word renaissance means rebirth or revival, which coincides with the band’s mission to revive and preserve the music of the Big Band Era. HRO’s goal is to reestablish Harlem as the Big Band Mecca of the World. The band has played at venues such as The Apollo Theater, Lincoln Center/Mid-Summer Night Swing, The Westchester Jazz Festival, The Philadelphia Arts Center, and the infamous Copacabana.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

Please note: Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees and when there are icy conditions.
