The Cab Calloway Orchestra comes from the Big Band Swing Jazz Orchestra style that came bursting out of the Cotton Club and the Savoy Ballroom in the Harlem Renaissance during the 30’s and 40’s.

The swing music and the jazz sound is still energetic, joyous, and soulful -- and appealing to audiences young and old.

No band embodies the raging bluegrass revival better than Punch Brothers, a virtuosic five piece made up of Paul Kowert (bass), Chris Eldridge (guitar), Noam Pikelny (banjo), Gabe Witcher (fiddle) and mandolin savant Chris Thile, that shifts its emphasis effortlessly “from instrumental wizardry to playful storytelling” (NY Times). The band’s fourth Nonesuch album, The Phosphorescent Blues, addresses with straight-up poignancy and subversive humor the power and the pitfalls of our super-connected era. While the record explores themes of alienation and modern digital discord, it’s also their warmest, most emotive and elegantly melodic work to date.

The multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter Sarah Jarosz is an artist cut from the same cloth. Raised outside Austin, she was a rising star of folk and bluegrass before she even graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music and is now a veteran at the ripe old age of 23. Her collaboration this year with Sara Watkins and Aoife O’Donovan is making waves across the Americana landscape; she’s here with her own band celebrating a recent move to Brooklyn.

Located along the esplanade leading up to the recently opened High Bridge, Oh Sit! 14 Sculptors Consider the Chair is a group exhibition of nine artists’ public artworks. In a frantic world, finding a chair can be almost impossible and settling comfortably into one can be an enormous satisfaction. Sitting in the wrong seat can cause anxiety and an even pain. Exhibiting artists Dan Bergman, Allan Cyprys, Robert Dell, Gregoire Ferland, Esther Grillo, Christina Jorge, Siena Gillann Porta, Herb Rosenberg and Chuck von Schmidt respond imaginatively to the notion of sitting or using a chair. Oh Sit! is framed as an imperative, a command—a way of asking the viewer to look and really consider the concept “chair” both objectively and subjectively.

Wheelchair softball was born over 25 years ago in the Midwest by a few individuals with spinal cord injuries and lower extremity impairments, who still wanted to enjoy America's greatest pastime. These individuals needed to develop a way of playing that would allow easy maneuverability in a wheelchair and keep the fast pace of softball. Thus, a new game was born and played on hard surfaces, such as a parking lots, with a 16-inch softball, which allows wheelchair players to keep one hand one the wheelchair while catching a softball without a glove.

In this 18th century play by Oliver Goldsmith, wealthy countryman Mr. Hardcastle arranges for his daughter Kate to meet Charles Marlow, the son of a rich Londoner, hoping the pair will marry. Unfortunately, Marlow is nervous around upper-class women, yet the complete opposite around working-class women. On his first acquaintance with Kate, the latter realises she will have to pretend to be 'common', or Marlow will not woo her. Thus Kate 'stoops to conquer', by posing as a maid, hoping to put Marlow at his ease so he falls for her.

The mission of Hudson Warehouse is to present the classics in exciting productions inspired by our past and relevant to our present day.

Our annual Latin Alternative Music Conference showcase features Mexican techno-funk rockers Kinky, who are known for their "insanely catchy disco-funk rhythms" that make "human beings have trouble sitting still." (LA Times) The five-piece band grew out of the Avanzada Regiamusical movement in Monterrey, Mexico in the late 90s and have continued to surprise their fans with their evolving sound that spans languages as well as genres.

The night begins with the “infectiously cheery, lighthearted and danceable” (NPR) Chilean indie pop of Astro, who would be right at home on a bill with MGMT and Passion Pit, and the ska-infused rock of the beloved Buenos Aires band Los Auténticos Decadentes, originally formed in 1986 and enjoying a recent return to the spotlight.

Watch classics and soon-to-be classics handpicked by NYC Parks' Arts, Culture and Fun series. All films are screened outside in NYC's great outdoors and they are free!

Teenaged Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) is a legend in his own time thanks to his uncanny skill at cutting classes and getting away with it. Intending to make one last grand duck-out before graduation, Ferris calls in sick, "borrows" a Ferrari, and embarks on a one-day bacchanal through the streets of Chicago. Dogging Ferris' trail at every turn is high-school principal Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), determined to catch Bueller in the act of class-cutting. Writer/director John Hughes once again tries to wed satire, slapstick, and social commentary, as Ferris Bueller's Day Off starts like a house afire and goes on to make "serious" points about status-seeking and casual parental cruelties. It brightens up considerably in the last few moments, when Ferris' tattletale sister (Jennifer Grey) decides to align herself with her merry prankster sibling.

The movie is shown outside so bring a chair or blanket. Space is limited and admission is on a first come-first serve basis. The movie will begin at dusk.

In this contemporary version of Annie, the orphan (Quvenzhané Wallis) has a hard-knock life with her calculating foster mother Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz). However, all that changes when hard-nosed billionaire and mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) takes her in. Stacks believes that he's Annie's guardian angel. But, Annie's confidence and sunny outlook could save Will instead. Rated PG.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

Inspired by the natural movements of the human body, Isadora Duncan created a style of dance filled with joyful, rhythmical movements. These skipping, running, and leaping, free, lyrical, and expressive upper body movements make it a great activity for children.

Wear comfortable clothes appropriate for the weather. Footwear should be flexible and easy to move in, such as ballet flats or comfortable sandals. This class is for children ages 6-11. Parents are responsible for the supervision of their children during the class.

Company members of The Isadora Duncan Dance Company will lead these free public classes underwritten by the Fort Tryon Park Trust. Consistent participants will be invited to perform as part of the dance performance on August 22nd. Please note: There is no class on Saturday, August 1st.
