Clothes tell stories, and the clothing in this exhibit tell the story of how the Bartow mansion of the 1850s became the Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum of today. Featuring garments dating primarily to 1870–1900, this fashion exhibition reflects the continuing history of the mansion beyond the Bartow family. Did you know that the north end of Central Park has a rich history that includes the British having been stationed here during the American Revolution, and American troops stationed there during the War of 1812? Recent archaeological and historical investigations in the area have revealed even more information about how the "Fort Landscape" was used in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, before this area was part of Central Park. This season, join our guides and learn the history of this part of the Park, get insight into the studies in the area, and appreciate the recent restorations undertaken by the Conservancy.

Highlights of this tour include McGowan's Pass, Fort Clinton, Nutter's Battery, and the Harlem Meer.

The tour route involves many hills and stairs, and some uneven terrain. Tour starts at Charles A. Dana Discovery Center (inside the park at 110th Street between Fifth and Lenox Avenues), and ends near the park perimeter at 106th Street and Fifth Avenue.

For weather cancellation and other ticket policies, please review the Central Park Conservancy's policies carefully.

Groups of seven or more must schedule a custom tour three weeks in advance at tours@centralparknyc.org.For more information, please review the Frequently Asked Questions.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” The installation consists of previously and newly acquired works, all from the original Gracie Mansion period, which have been curated to create a more historically accurate picture of life in New York City during the time of Gracie Mansion’s construction.

The year 1619 marked the beginning of the slave trade in the Thirteen Colonies, but the first African American elected to office in the United States of America has been documented as early as 1768.

Despite slavery, prejudice and Jim Crow laws, America has seen numerous influential African American leaders who shaped the social, legal, and justice systems. Artists in this exhibition offer broad interpretations on the theme of African Americans in public service. America: The Legacy of African American Public Service celebrates noted government officials, as well as activists and members of the public who dedicated their lives to the greater good of the people.

Return to the days of lords, knights and princesses—and even dragons—as Wave Hill pays homage to former resident and scholar of arms and armor Bashford Dean. Spend one, two or three afternoons building, decorating and populating your own medieval castle. Today, design and create your own brilliant, multi-colored work of art that draws inspiration from the stained-glass rose windows of medieval times. Using foil tape and jewel-toned plastics and paints, build a beautiful sun-catcher or candle holder that will help your home feel a little like a medieval castle.

An engaging lecturer on topics ranging from design history to plant combinations, garden writer Marta McDowell has for years been occupied with writers who garden, and whose horticultural interests have changed her own planting beds, as well as her bookshelves. Starting with Mark Twain, a former illustrious tenant of Wave Hill House, and connecting to authors ranging from Emerson to Harriet Beecher Stowe, McDowell will explore the writing-gardening connection in their gardens and her own.

This is the second of Wave Hill’s three 2016 Horticultural Lectures, a winter series hosted by the Friends of Horticulture Committee and devoted to the subject of garden design and the meaning of our interactions with plants and the natural world.
