Brooklyn-based janus was formed in 2002 with the goal of creating and presenting new repertoire for the trio through commissioning projects and works-in-process collaborations. Named after Janus, the Roman god whose double-faced image peers into the past and future, the trio maintains the established tradition for the instrumentation while breaking new ground into unexplored sonic frontiers. Beginning with Debussy and including Toru Takemitsu, André Jolivet, Sophia Gubaidulina and Kaija Saariaho, composers have been allured by this intriguing combination of something bowed, something blown, and something plucked.

2013 High Rock Challenge is scheduled for Saturday, April 27 and Sunday, April 28. New this year is the Sunday, April 28 Solo 5K Sprint along a portion of the High Rock Challenge Course. This year’s High Rock Challenge will have its start/finish at the Henry Kaufmann Camp Grounds on Manor Road. This is a different location from the past several years but the site of the very first High Rock Challenges eleven years ago!

Two-member teams must run together at all times and compete in mystery events, which are located throughout the approximately 10K (and no longer than 13K) course. Mystery events are cleverly designed and encourage teamwork as well as mental and physical acumen. Location and race details to follow. Events are not revealed until race day when you’re on the course.

The High Rock Challenge Adventure Race is held in memory of NYPD Officer John Kelly. Proceeds from the High Rock Challenge help support Greenbelt trail maintenance and environmental education programs.

Rockaway Help will be hosting a community workshop at the MoMA VW Dome to brainstorm around what web based tools and apps they wished existed for emergency preparedness and response. This will be a hands-on session where participants will be sketching, talking and thinking through design and coastal living problems and work to see if we can collaboratively come up with concrete solutions through technology.

We need community leaders to help us figure out what kinds of problems we had before and after Sandy - problems that we can solve using technology. Once we identify the problems, our hacking teams will work with community members to build the solutions.

This program includes hand-on activities and a nature walk through the forest.

Nature’s Helpers - 2 p.m.
Spend some time outside enjoying nature while helping to keep the Park clean. Families are encouraged to come and take a tour of the Park and help keep it clean along the way. Gloves, garbage bags and trash grabbers will be provided.

Discovery Tour - 4 p.m.
Learn what birds eat from trees, early spring migration, and discover the layers within the forest.

Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre.

Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is too focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass.

Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre’s Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.
