And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

The Bronx Latin AMerican Art Biennial presents the exhibition Open For Discussion. Art by Eduardo Terranova, Marylin Caminero, Pablo Caviede, Yarisa Colon, Josue Guarionex, Elizabeth Moreno, Delilah Montoya, Justo Carreras, Alejandro Epifanio, Jose Ortiz, Yehimar Abyssys, Carolina Bermudez, Melissa Calderon, Wanda Cotorreal, Martita Ibanez, Jonas Hidalgo.

The exhibition suggests that art discussion is inherently an expression of populism and protest; therefore it is important not to deny the mass attraction to it, but to recognize its communicative power.

NYC Audubon experts lead the way as we marvel at quirky but logical bird behavior and delicate feathers in exquisite patterns.

Influential birders such as Roger Tory Peterson and Allan D. Cruickshank learned their craft on Van Cortlandt Park’s ecologically diverse grounds, and these walks celebrate the tradition set by them. Participants will look for resident and migrant species and discuss a wide range of avian topics. No registration necessary. No limit. Free. When birding on your own, check the Nature Sightings log in front of the Nature Center before you head out. At the end of walks, please add your sightings to the log, so others may be aware of recent nature happenings in the park.

Bring binoculars if you have them and wear sturdy shoes!

Edgar Allan Poe: Stories Recited from Memory features dramatic recitations of several writings of Edgar Allan Poe. Selections will include several of the following: The Black Cat, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Oval Portrait, The Cask of Amontillado, Morella, The Raven, Annabelle Lee, The Bells, For Annie, A Dream within A Dream, El Dorado, The Fall of the House of Usher, an excerpt from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The recitations are framed in the context of the author’s life, interspersed with readings of excerpts from newspapers, letters, and observations of contemporaries.

Anne Louise Williams is a historic interpreter certified with the National Association of Interpreters. Anne is a volunteer with the National Park Service at Whitehaven (Grant Home) and the Old Court House for special events (since 2009) and a volunteer with the historic Daniel Boone Home (since 1996) in St. Louis, Missouri. Anne integrates her passion for history, literature, and drama to perform literature in the context of the author’s life. She is experienced in first person interpretation as well. She has portrayed Virginia Minor, recreating her testimony on Suffrage before the US Senate Committee. In 2011, Anne researched and reconstructed the testimonies in the infamous Lemp Divorce which were re-enacted at the Old Court House where the trial occurred in 1909, with a Lemp descendant portraying William Lemp and the audiences taking the roles of witnesses. Anne performed at the Poe Visitor Center in Fordham (Bronx) in January 2014. Anne will be performing at several venues in September and October, including the Poe Museum in Richmond, the Free Library of Philadelphia, the Poe Visitor Center in Fordham, and the Lyndhurst Castle in Tarrytown, the Daniel Boone Home in Defiance MO, and the Lemp Mansion in St. Louis MO.

We’ll finish our Ramble season this year with a look ahead to a new series of Rambles, exploring the Bronx River’s tributaries. Rising in the midst of the Woodlawn Cemetery, Woodlawn Brook is a rare opportunity to trace the course of a Bronx River tributary from its spring-fed source at the Hudson/Bronx River watershed divide to (almost) its outlet.

Along the way we’ll examine a unique Bronx River “community” and its place in the history of the river’s suburban development. Amidst the autumn glory of century-old trees we’ll pause to take in a few of the cemetery’s historic monuments and the stories behind them, including women’s rights pioneer Elizabeth Cady Stanton; the “brother” of the Bronx River Soldier; the mystery of the nameless mausoleum; the heroic tale of “the Woodlawn Snowman”; the man with the 15,000-mile funeral; the admiral who damned the torpedoes; and the most absurd but tragically true epitaph you’ll ever see.

Please note: This free tour will take about two hours, so wear your comfortable shoes and bring water. The Woodlawn Cemetery asks that you do not take photographs without first obtaining a permit from the cemetery Administrative Office. For more information please call Stephen DeVillo at (646) 271-8223.

Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

Prospect Cemetery is the oldest family burial ground in Queens, and one of the oldest in New York City, dating from at least 1668. In 1856, Nicholas Ludlum, a successful merchant born in Jamaica, purchased the property and constructed the Chapel of the Sisters, a memorial to three of his daughters who died young. Both the cemetery and the chapel are designated as New York City landmarks. By 1989, the cemetery was completely overgrown, historic head stones knocked over and broken, and the Chapel vandalized and in disrepair. An extensive revitalization program was undertaken in 1999, which included clearing and re-landscaping the cemetery grounds, conservation of historically important grave markers and the restoration of the chapel interior and façade.

Reservations are required, contact programs@kingmanor.org or (718) 206-0545 to make a reservation.

Please note: This program is a combination lecture & walking tour. Due to space restrictions in the cemetery & chapel, the audience will be limited to 20 members maximum.
