Join us for a lecture titled "Future of Manned Space Flight; Why it's Time to Go Back," by the Amateur Astronomers Association, followed by a rooftop screeing of Star Trek II.

In 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human ever to go into space. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin shattered limits again in 1969, when they became the first people to set foot on a second celestial body. In 2000, the first crew was sent up to the International Space Station. Although we continue to put humans in space, we have not taken a major innovative step forward in this area in over a decade. It's time for this to change. We're in need of the technological and scientific innovations that manned spaceflight provides, as well as a dose of inspiration - to get children believing that they can be the next Neil Armstrong...or Captain Kirk.

Dark Nights, Bright Lights is a new Arts, Culture & Fun series in partnership with the Amateur Astronomers Association. The AAA holds observing and educational events throughout the 5 boroughs, and beyond. Visit aaa.org to find out more and check out their calendar of upcoming events!

Once a free and open society, Vienna is bitterly divided between high morals and the greed of commerce. Disguised as a monk, the duke wanders the land, prying into the daily lives of his subjects. When his deputy sentences Claudio to death, the virtue and purity of his sister, Isabella, is the price she must pay to save her brother’s life. Measure for Measure is directed by artistic director Stephen Burdman.

Located along the esplanade leading up to the recently opened High Bridge, Oh Sit! 14 Sculptors Consider the Chair is a group exhibition of nine artists’ public artworks. In a frantic world, finding a chair can be almost impossible and settling comfortably into one can be an enormous satisfaction. Sitting in the wrong seat can cause anxiety and an even pain. Exhibiting artists Dan Bergman, Allan Cyprys, Robert Dell, Gregoire Ferland, Esther Grillo, Christina Jorge, Siena Gillann Porta, Herb Rosenberg and Chuck von Schmidt respond imaginatively to the notion of sitting or using a chair. Oh Sit! is framed as an imperative, a command—a way of asking the viewer to look and really consider the concept “chair” both objectively and subjectively.

Each week, Wave Hill educators share some of their favorite nature tales. These stories—classics and more—come to life through interactive readings, sing-alongs and puppetry. In the summer, the flower gardens come to life with flittering, fluttering butterflies and moths.

Join us as we read stories and have fun with a movement piece about the lifecycle of these colorful creatures. This week’s books: Butterfly, Butterfly by Peter Horácek, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, and How to Hide a Butterfly by Ruth Heller.

Programs are held outdoors in good weather; in Wave Hill House in inclement weather. Ideal for children ages three to six with an adult.

Seneca Village was Manhattan’s first significant community of African-American property owners, once located on acreage in today’s Central Park. The Whiteheads, nineteenth century landowners, subdivided their land into subplots for sale. These land transactions laid the foundation for the development of this substantial community that contained three churches, several cemeteries, a school, and home structures for nearly 300 residents. The community was in existence from 1825 through 1856, when it was razed to make way for the Park. In the late 1990s through 2011, contemporary scholars, archaeologists, preservationists, civic activists, and community board members became interested in its history, and sought evidence to uphold the new narrative. In this talk, come hear about the process and progress of the recent public history efforts to help New Yorkers, and history buffs far and wide, gain a broader understanding of this important New York City story.

This event is in conjunction with the Arsenal Gallery's exhibition Living Landmarks. Living Landmarks celebrates the nine individually landmarked New York City public parks in honor of the 50th anniversary of the City's landmarks law. The exhibit showcases their contributions to landscape design and to the dynamism of the city through historical and contemporary photography, renderings, maps, artifacts, and memorabilia.

Learn how New Yorkers got around before the bridges and tunnels, and how ferries are still an important and growing part of our transportation infrastructure.

New York Harbor both binds and separates the cities, boroughs, and neighborhoods that lie along its shores, and for centuries, ferries have helped get New Yorkers where they needed to go. Although bridges and tunnels, marvels of architecture and engineering, now connect the city, an increasing number of people are returning to waterborne transportation, which is opening up new opportunities and creating new challenges for the city’s future development.

From the vantage point of Brooklyn Bridge Park, Andrew Gustafson of Turnstile Tours will explore where the first steam-powered ferries set off, and where the future of New York ferry service is headed.

Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form that has evolved over centuries into an exciting combination of martial arts, dance, music, and acrobatics. Some of capoeira’s benefits include strength, flexibility, stamina, overall fitness and confidence. Benefits of capoeira for kids include promoting social interaction and sense of belonging, building confidence, discipline and self esteem, promoting a healthy lifestyle so children become active, and healthy, and develop cultural awareness and tolerance. Wear comfortable clothing.

Capoeira was developed in Brazil, but its history extends to Africa and tribes from Angola. Slaves living on Brazilian Plantations who weren’t allowed to openly practice traditional forms of self-defense developed an ingenious method of disguising their training by combining it with dance-like movements, singing, and the rhythms of primitive instruments.

As cool breezes blow off the Hudson and the sun sets over the Palisades, enjoy an outdoor concert on the Great Lawn.

Each Sunset Wednesday, New York City musicians capture the vibrant colors of summer in performances that feature jazz, popular music, show tunes and original songs.

Hilliard Greene and the Jazz Expressions is a powerhouse quartet launched by the legendary jazz balladeer Jimmy Scott. Greene’s fellow band members are TK Blue (saxophone/flute), Dwayne ‘Cook’ Broadnax (drums), and Sharp Roadway (piano). As Jazz News declared, “the interplay between all of them is fluent and flawless.” In addition to producing three CDs for the Jazz Expressions, Greene’s other projects include the In&Out Band (a trio using jazz standards as a vehicle for free improvisation) and the ZigZag Quartet. Hilliard Greene and The Jazz Expressions’ performance is co-produced with the Bronx Musical Heritage Center, an initiative of WHEDco.

Visitors may bring a chair or sit on the lawn to enjoy the music. No blankets, please. This event is free with admission to the grounds.

“The name of my stallion is King of the Wind. My mare is called Electric Queen and she electrocutes all who get in her way…” This incredible introduction to the head-spinning Sonepur Fair, a festival held at the confluence of the Ganges and Gandak rivers on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Kartika, comes from the Horse Breeder, who, along with the Showman, the Rider, the Exorcist, the Dancer and the Mahut (elephant tamer) comprise the cast. This starry-eyed impression of the festival is sensory overload, complete with all the frenetic pacing and explosions of neon that only a visit to this fair could offer. 2015, 56 minutes. Directed by Gaspard Kuentz and Cédric Dupire.

There will be a pre-screening performances at 7 p.m.; films begins at sundown.

Programmed by Rooftop Films.

Shakespeare's farce about courtship, jealousy, and friendship features one of the most beloved comedic characters of all time. Sir John Falstaff, banished to Windsor and running out of money, devises what he thinks is a fool-proof plan: seduce the wives of the two richest men in town. Unfortunately for him, the women immediately see through his scheme...and proceed to turn the tables on him. Meanwhile, mayhem ensues as three suitors vie to marry the local heiress.

Pack a picnic, bring a friend and settle in for a night of premier movies on the pier. In this film, six-year-old Hushpuppy must learn the ways of courage and love when faced with both her hot-tempered father's fading health and melting ice-caps that flood her ramshackle bayou community and unleash ancient aurochs.

The film will begin when it is dark enough to see the image on the screen which is dependent on the sunset, generally around 8:30pm. Seating will open at 6:30, and is first come first serve and people can reserve chairs for their friends once onsite. We put out chairs (about 250 of them) and they normally fill by 7:30 and ground seating is available in front and behind the chair section. Front ground seating is for blankets/butts on ground (the pier is hard made of pavers) & picnics are welcome if trash is disposed of properly. Dogs are welcome on leash and off chairs. People may bring their own chairs and place them behind our chairs on the dark pavers, if they choose to bring them. There is no seating or standing in the Southern aisle of the pier. @summeronhudson for weather updates
