Many New Yorkers are unaware of the 350 species of wild birds—almost a third of all bird species in North America—that live in or pass through New York City each year. Artist Alan Messer skillfully captures many, from exquisite migrating blackburnian warblers in Central Park’s ramble to a Northern Harrier scanning the vast marshes of Jamaica Bay. Conserving Our City of Nature: The Artwork of Alan Messer presented by NYC Audubon reveals over 30 of Messer’s detailed paintings, illustrations, and field sketches of New York City's avian wildlife and habitats, offering a view of NYC Audubon's conservation mission through an artistic eye.

Remembering is both a collective and a personal activity. In this exhibition, both are on display in relation to two World’s Fairs that took place in Flushing, Queens in 1939/40 and 1964/65. Within this exhibition, collective memory is represented by shared experiences of the Fairs and personal memory by the memorabilia drawn from the collections of people who attended and fondly recall the Fairs. While these Fairs were global in scope, their attendees were overwhelmingly local, many residing in Queens. All items on display in the exhibition have either been donated or loaned to the Queens Historical Society by those residents of Queens who attended the Fairs.

Please note: this event has been cancelled.

Preservationists were once welcomed in urban environments as the lynchpin for stabilization and recovery and the key to balanced and intelligent development. Now they’re often portrayed as adversaries and obstacles to growth. Why this flip-flop? Is this accurate? Does the preservation movement still have an important positive role to play in New York City? And what is that role?

Hugh Hardy is the founding partner of H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture, known for design of distinctive new buildings, restoration of historic structures, and planning projects for the public realm across America. A major presence in New York, H3 has completed restoration of Radio City Music Hall, multiple projects for the Brooklyn Academy of Music and New York Botanical Garden’s Leon Levy Visitor Center together with restoration of Bryant Park. Their faithful recreations of the New Victory and the New Amsterdam theaters on 42nd Street were pivotal to reemergence of this famed street as one of New York’s premier places of entertainment. Mr. Hardy’s work is consistently recognized by civic, architectural, and preservation organizations for a progressive spirit and sensitive understanding of context.

Alan Messer has taught birding ID and nature drawing classes at The New York Historical Society, and The New York City Audubon Society. His works have been shown at the Cape May Bird Observatory, the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, at Ellis Island, and The Lincoln Center in New York NY. He has illustrated for books, magazines, and field guides, and is a regular contributor to Bird Watcher's Digest. Messer is a former President of The Linnaean Society of New York.

Admission is free but space is limited.

Join us in celebrating the opening of the very first passage on the Bronx River on its most downstream dam. This dam is one of the oldest on the river and was built in the 1600's to power a grist mill. It currently separates the freshwater portion of the river, from its brackish, or tidal, waters. The fish passage will allow two species, collectively known as river herring, alewife and blueback herring, to swim over the East 182nd Street Dam to access 12 acres of spawning and rearing habitat. This fish passage is the first of three planned on the Bronx River within NYC.

The River Park Fish Passage will help to establish a sustainable river herring population on the Bronx River, attract and provide more food for native wildlife, contribute to regional efforts to protect river herring by expanding access to habitat, and maximize the ecological health and value of the Bronx River. This fish passage is a part of on-going efforts to improve the Bronx River and restore NYC’s coastal ecosystem.
