Join the Fort Tryon Park Trust, New York City Parks & Recreation and the Michels family in celebrating the late Council Member Stan Michels at the fifth annual memorial jazz concert performed by local impresario Marjorie Eliot and her ensemble. The jazz is hot and the setting is cool, underneath the majestic elms on the promenade alongside the beautiful Heather Garden and overlooking the Hudson River.

Stan Michels represented northern Manhattan in the City Council for 24 years from 1978 through 2001. He was chair of the Committee on Environmental Protection, and his legislative record was notable for his work fighting on behalf of tenants, for the expansion of the city’s recycling program, for the protection of our water supply and cleaner air, and against childhood lead poisoning, smoking in public places and unreasonable noise. He also was a steadfast advocate for parks, allocating over $50 million for park improvements in Washington Heights, Inwood and Harlem, including virtually every playground in his district. The promenade where this concert is being held was named in his honor shortly before he passed away on August 1, 2008.

We hope you can be with us to remember Stan on the fifth anniversary of his passing.

This program will be accessible to people with disabilities.

Associated Press called London-based singer/songwriter Lianne La Havas Is Your Love Big Enough? “not just one of the year’s best debuts, but one of the year’s best albums.” Her live show has been equally lauded, with the Los Angeles Times calling her “a natural talent with boundless potential whose charisma is matched only by her musical prowess.” The daughter of a Greek father and a Jamaican mother, La Havas fell in love with her parents’ favorite music as a child and cites artists like Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, and Mary J. Blige as influences. This year, La Havas has performed around the world on sold-out tours and on Conan, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Late Night with David Letterman, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. She has also been embraced by many musical heroes, including Prince, Stevie Wonder, Robert Plant, Alicia Keys, Bon Iver, and Erykah Badu.

Often rocking out with her ukulele in front of her dynamic, versatile band, LP has a voice that is instantly ear-catching, a natural instrument of power and grace. Fueled by a contagious, pure love of performing, LP’s stage presence is inherently powerful with a free-flowing, infectious confidence honed through her years of touring. LP was drawn heavily to transformational artists, those who blended mystique with the rare ability to make an instant connection with listeners, both as performers and writers. Her live performances gracefully evolved during bouts of intense touring, and her songwriting skills developed profoundly. Her debut album will be released in 2013 and she hopes it will be worthy of her teachers and will also satisfy her own creative expectations.

First introduced by a mutual friend, vocalist Coco O., and multi-instrumentalist/producer Robin Hannibal had immediate chemistry. Dubbing themselves Quadron, the two began making waves with the Motown-inspired single, “Slippin’” making them a darling among music critics. Recognizing the tremendous talent of the duo, New York Magazine, named their self-titled 2009 album as one of the “Top Ten Best” of the year. While Coco’s credits Lauryn Hill and Sade as being at the center of her formative music years, Robin’s flair for layering the intricacies of chord progressions, composition, and instrumentation come from his love for musical greats such as Ennio Morricone and Charles Stepney. Their newest single, “Hey Love” was released in March 2013 and features a pop-friendly tapestry of busy beats and pounding piano.

Whether at the turntables, or in studio behind the boards, DJ Center soul-travels, navigating audiences with a crate of musical goods from around the globe, while echoing a New York state of mind. Having rocked cities as far and wide as Los Angeles to Barcelona, DJ Center’s signature style remains soulful, feel-good music. Always aiming to break new tunes and celebrate forgotten gems, a DJ Center set is synonymous with the finest of selections: whether he is doing music supervision for Gucci, recording radio sessions for Giant Step, or keeping party goers on their feet until the wee hours.

In Brave, Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (Robbie Coltrane). Merida's actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch (Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it's too late.

The house is a simple modular space with a rainwater-collecting butterfly roof, and wall panels inscribed with text and information from William Powers’ book “12x12” which details his experience living in the structure. These panels will vary and be movable, allowing the structure to grow and evolve as various artists and invited groups take up short-term residence.

The Randall’s Island Park Alliance, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, and Made Event are pleased to present FLOW, the annual summer art exhibit along the shoreline at Randall’s Island Park in New York City. FLOW is aimed at fostering appreciation of the shoreline through artistic expression, while calling visitors to interact with and care for the Park’s island environment. Each year, FLOW features five site specific projects by participants in the Bronx Museum’s Artists in the Marketplace (AIM) program for emerging artists.

Randall’s Island Park is a unique and remarkable waterfront resource, located in the East River with views of the Queens, Bronx and Manhattan shorelines. New waterfront pathways run along the 4.5-mile shoreline, which includes almost 9 acres of restored salt marsh and freshwater wetlands. The Park also offers a track & field stadium, a golf center, a 20-court tennis center and dozens of new playing fields, as well as the Harlem River Event Site, home of Made Event’s Electric Zoo, a three-day Labor Day weekend concert event at Randall’s Island which draws local and international DJ artists and audience.

FLOW.13 – this year's third annual exhibition – will be open to the public every day from June-November, and will feature five new site-specific installations, all reflecting and encouraging interaction with the Park’s history and environment. The five installations are located along the southern shoreline of Randall's Island Park.

FLOW is made possible through support from Made Event, proud producers of The Electric Zoo Festival, NYC’s largest electronic dance music festival, held annually at Randall’s Island Park.

The FLOW exhibitions express the confluence of art, music and environment at Randall’s Island Park, in the midst of one of the world’s greatest cities.

Adam Frezza and Terri Chiao’s collaborative, interdisciplinary practice explores the role of play in everyday life. Their work is often inspired by common daily rituals, such as eating breakfast, watering house plants or celebrating holidays. In the process, quotidian materials become important elements of inspiration.

For their project in the Sun Porch, Frezza and Chiao explore the tension between nature and artifice embedded in the concept of a “controlled wild,” transforming the space into a competitive natural environment created largely through artificial means. Responding to the Sun Porch’s alternating role of winter conservatory and summer art space, Frezza and Chiao have built a small pyramidal greenhouse in the center of the Sun Porch, populated by a lush assortment of handmade, paper plants dispersed among living plants curated from local nurseries. Viewers are invited to enter the greenhouse sculpture and inspect the plants up-close while immersed in a fantastical landscape of fiction and reality.

The Rock Steady Crew celebrates its 36th anniversary of being a true Hip-Hop brand ambassador by bringing its annual free concert to SummerStage in Central Park for the first time. In typical fashion, RSC will present the who's who of Hip-Hop past and present by showcasing legendary MCs and DJs alongside some of the best rising talent. The beloved annual gathering always attracts fans from around the world, to be part of one of New York’s longest running annual celebrations of Hip-Hop culture.

Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, the critically acclaimed Hip-Hop duo emerged onto the music scene in 1991 with their debut EP, All Souled Out which was followed by the release of the classic LP, Mecca and the Soul Brother. Their signature hit, “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)” has been recognized as one of the most memorable Hip-Hop recordings of all time.

The Five Percent Nation of Islam was a popular inspiration for numerous thinking-man’s rap groups during the early 1990’s, and Brand Nubian was arguably the finest of the more militant crop. The hoopla surrounding their aggressive Afrocentrism sometimes overshadowed the playful and positive sides of their work, as well as the undeniable virtuosity of lead MC Grand Puba's rhymes -- all showcased to best effect on their highly acclaimed debut, One for All.

Special Ed “got it made” as a rising star in hip-hop when he was just 16. His debut album, Youngest in Charge was on the Billboard charts for 38 weeks and featured, “I’m the Magnificent” and “I Got it Made,” which achieved “classic” status in the Hip-Hop community.

Craig G began with Marley Marl and the Juice Crew in 1985. After signing with Atlantic Records, he released two albums in 1989 and 1991. Allmusic has called The Symphony, “a landmark moment in the evolution of hardcore rap.”

Q-Unique is a Puerto Rican rapper best known for his work done with The Arsonists. Their first album, As the World Burns was released in 1999 reached #78 on Billboard’s Top R&B and Hip-Hop Albums. In 2013 there is much suspense for their release of Lost in the Fire, which will be their first album in over 10 years.

Homeboy Sandman jumped in the game in 2006, and dropped his first EP Nourishment soon after in 2007. Later that year, he released a full-length album which led him into the limelight being acclaimed by underground radio stations, Source Magazine, Okayplayer.com and MSN.com.

Torae was first featured by Hip Hop DX in 2007 in their DXNext Hip-Hop underground series. Since then, Torae has worked with a number of artists and producers, such as Wale and Talib Kweli.

Join more than 2,000 attendees at Baisley Pond Park for performances by top gospel singers, including Byron Cage, Latice Crawford, Michael Pugh, and the Allen AME Choir.

If there’s a songsmith who understands heartache and pain, it’s Byron Cage, a man who has repeatedly touched gospel music heaven, only to be reminded time and again that the road to life’s mountaintops is often spent in the valley of the shadow. Cage knows the struggle well and his fourth CD, Faithful to Believe is a joyous testament of praise after a season of trials — a soul-searching period where he took stock of his ministry, his music, and his personal relationships.

Deon Kipping is an established, prolific, and inspirational songwriter/producer, whose talents have spawned him to Gold and Platinum success. His works to date include the smash single “Incredible God” and “Praise Him In Advance.” His latest work entitled. I Just Want to Hear You is a collection that will cause you to relate to his life’s challenges, plateaus, and triumphs.

Latice Crawford got her start singing in her cousin's choir, The New York landscape, where she often times gathered inspiration, allowed her to explore her creative capacities - writing, designing fashion and perfecting her signature sound. Judges of BET's hit series, Sunday Best felt the same exact way. The spirited siren wowed the judges week after week with her gifts, successfully securing the number three spot in the series' final round during its second season run.

Michael Pugh is best know from his participation as a contestant on the fourth season of BET's Sunday Best gospel singing competition. Since then he has workd with the famed Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral on their hit single "Greater."

In 1974, Lenny Smith penned “Our God Reigns”. Shortly after, it was being sung in thousands of churches across the globe. It’s now 2013, and Smith has released Who Was And Is And Is To Come. A crowning achievement in a career spanning almost six decades and encompassing hundreds of songs, the record is a gospel album of simple but certain declarations about the primacy of Maker over everything else.

The Greater Allen Cathedral of New York is an African Methodist Episcopal church located in Jamaica, Queens, New York. The congregation currently has over 23,000 members, making it one of the largest churches in the United States. The choir has released Reverend Floyd Flake Presents the Worship Experience, which offers an outstanding collection of songs recorded by The Greater Allen Cathedral. The album’s first single is “Greater” featuring Michael Pugh.

NYC Parks hosts this free festival to increase our programming in Southern Queens, and treat parkgoers to an afternoon of soulful sounds. This event is sponsored by NYC Parks, the City Parks Foundation, Council Member Ruben Wills, Globestar Media, Queens College and WLIB. Kid-friendly activities will also be available, including arts & crafts, face painting, and an inflatable bounce house.

Hudson River Park teams up with The Bowery Presents to bring you a series of exciting concerts on the waterfront.
Doors open at 5pm, show starts at 6pm.

The Gaslight Anthem are a folk punk band from New Brunswick, New Jersey, consisting of Brian Fallon (lead vocals, guitar), Alex Rosamilia (guitar, backing vocals), Alex Levine (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Benny Horowitz (drums, percussion, tambourine). They released their first album, Sink or Swim, on XOXO Records in May 2007, and their second album, The '59 Sound, on SideOneDummy Records in August 2008. The band's third album, American Slang, was released on June 15, 2010.

The Hold Steady is a Brooklyn-based rock band formed by vocalist/guitarist Craig Finn (ex-Lifter Puller) in 2004. Wanting to capture the sound of bands such as The Replacements and The Grifters, he recruited guitarist Tad Kubler (also ex-Lifter Puller), drummer Judd Counsell, and bassist Galen Polivka. In 2005 the band grew to include Franz Nicolay (of The World/Inferno Friendship Society) on keyboards and Bobby Drake took over on drums following Counsell's departure.

The summer classes will be an introduction to the foundational elements of Yang family Taijiquan, including the first section of the long form. In addition to this, we will be studying the eight Zhan Zhuang Qigong postures of Yiquan to complement our understanding of correct body alignment and connectedness of movement in Taijiquan.

Instructor Joh Morton has been studying Chinese Martial Arts for over seven years and has competed nationally and internationally in Kung Fu and Tai Chi. He learned Yang family Taijiquan from Master Dug Corpolongo, and has continued to study with him for over six years, receiving certification to teach the long form in 2011. In addition to Taijiquan, he has studied Yiquan, Shuai Jiao, Northern Longfist Kung Fu, Southern White Crane, and Xingyiquan. His focus is on understanding and incorporating traditional theories of Qigong and Chinese martial theory with modern principles of body mechanics and physics.

The Land Art Generator Initiative: Freshkills Park is an exhibition of the top 25 designs selected out of 250 submissions from around the globe by artists, architects, designers, engineers, landscape architects, and more. LAGI 2012 was an ideas competition to design a site-specific public artwork that, in addition to its conceptual beauty, has the ability to harness energy cleanly from nature and convert it into electricity for the utility grid. At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park will be almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in over 100 years. The transformation of what was formerly the world’s largest landfill into a productive and beautiful cultural destination will make the park a symbol of renewal and an expression of how our society can restore balance to its landscape. The top three submissions not only heighten the beauty of the surrounding park land but also provide a gateway into a greater discussion about the preservation of the environment.

Little Red’s Hood is a fresh retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood” tale updated with a modern sensibility that will appeal to kids. The production features a dozen, hand-made marionettes crafted by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre.

Like many of today’s children, Little Red is a smart, young city slicker who is too focused on her smartphone to notice her surroundings. Wulfric is a misunderstood wolf with a sweet tooth. When Little Red travels from New York City to the country to deliver some cupcakes to her Grandma, she encounters a colorful cast of characters as Wulfric the Wolf tries to head her off at the pass.

Little Red’s Hood is directed by Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre’s Artistic Director Bruce Cannon and written by Liam Hurley.

The CityParks PuppetMobile is the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

<![CDATA[Bowery Presents: Ben Howard / Michael Kiwanuka]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/07/29/bowery-presents-ben-howard-michael-kiwanuka http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2013/07/29/bowery-presents-ben-howard-michael-kiwanuka Date: July 29, 2013

Ben Howard’s stage presence enchants his audience as the music flows from his fingers, “gathering words and melodies as they go, carrying his reedy, tremulous voice as their crescendos surge” according to The New York Times. His debut album Every Kingdom is now certified Platinum in his native U.K, while his latest release The Burgh Island E.P. debuted #1 on iTunes in the U.K., and in the top 30 on iTunes in the U.S as he gathers a dedicated fan base internationally. His music unites intricate and captivating guitar riffs with tender lyrics to create catchy songs which will leave listeners humming long after a listen. He has been nominated for “Best Male” and “Breakthrough Act,” for the Brit Awards.

With Michael Kiwanuka, it’s all about the voice. The new British/singer songwriter depicts his one of a kind voice as “hitting straight through to the core” with direct, emotional songs about love, yearning, comfort and belonging. Jon Pareles of The New York Times says Kiwanuka’s songs, “set a few words within a gentle vamp, often with a touch of jazz or blues, and linger over them until they become liquid incantations, melting into the music and finding refuge there.” In 2012, Kiwanuka won the BBC Sound of the Year Award. Previous winners of this prestigious award include Adele, Keane, and Ellie Goulding. Kiwanuka’s debut album, Home Again, was released in January 2012 and reached number 4 on the UK charts, as well as many top 10 charts around the world.
