Start the day off at 1PM with a concert by colonial balladeer Linda Russell. Enjoy a special visit from St. Nicholas as he arrives on horseback at 2:30pm. Grab a carrot and feed St. Nicholas’s faithful horse before signing the Red Book of who’s been naughty and who’s been nice. Sip cider as Sinterklaas tells the tale of The Bakers Dozen. Take your photo with Old St. Nick.

Games, food and crafts will continue throughout the day: Try your hand at colonial games, nosh on holiday food to warm your soul, create a holiday pomander, or decorate a Dutch clog for Sinterklaas before the tree decorating and lighting as the sun goes down.

Starting last year on Alice Austen’s birthday, the Alice Austen House began a project documenting the grounds and waterfront from Austen’s home, Clear Comfort. Each day since then the house, grounds, and activities of the site have been documented, much like Alice Austen did over a hundred years ago. The museum will present an installation of nearly 200 snapshots capturing the daily life of this historic site and invite visitors to participate in the project.

Alice Austen Everyday is on view September 26 – December 30, 2015 and shown in conjunction with the museum’s 30th Anniversary exhibition “Becoming Clear Comfort: History of a Landmark," tracing the history of the house. Recently tagged images will also be on view, presented on an iPad in the gallery. Exhibition s on view during museum hours: Tuesday - Sunday 11:00am-5:00pm.

Be like Alice Austen: Upload images taken during the day to social media using the hashtag #aliceausteneveryday. Not on social media? Email photos with title, date, and name of photographer to info@aliceausten.org to be included in the project.

Cover Photo Contest: Submit a #aliceausteneveryday photo of the house and grounds of Clear Comfort to info@aliceausten.org by November 1, 2015. The selected winner’s photo will be used as the Alice Austen House’s Facebook Cover Photo.

Awesome Asana Yoga is an hour-long exercise in body stretching and mind cleansing taught by registered yoga teacher Chelsea Best. MJM’s Awesome Asana is part of Chelsea’s “Localize Yoga” project, which aims to make yoga affordable and accessible – to present it “as a possibility, rather than as a luxury” – to the denizens of upper Manhattan. The class is $5, and mats, should you need one, are provided.

The tradition of lighting trees on Park Avenue began seventy years ago when several Park Avenue families wanted a special way to honor those men and women who died in World War II. Today the illuminated trees, which appear on the Park Avenue Malls between 54th and 97th Streets, remain a symbol of peace and a reminder of the sacrifices made to attain it.

The trees are traditionally lit on the first Sunday evening of December following a ceremony outside the Brick Presbyterian Church (Park Avenue and 91st Street) that serves as a reminder of the original meaning of the lights and a celebration of the holiday season.

In the early days, the costs of the tree lighting were underwritten by just a few families but now this sparkling display is made possible each year by contributions The Fund for Park Avenue receives from the community.

Park’s Gardener Steph, and plenty of performances including Sing for Hope Youth Chorus, Finding Neverland the Musical, The New York Life Singers, and our returning favorite kindie performer Audra Rox!

Last but not least, Taste of Home‘s Gingerbread Blvd. is coming back to Madison Square Park to help set the holiday mood. Neighborhood restaurants Hill Country Chicken and Almond will also be onsite serving delicious treats to the holiday crowds.

Teens will join artist Monica Banks for a workshop inspired by her sculptures Luisa and Rusty installed at the center. Monica will teach participants how to make wire sculptures, which they can bring home after the workshop. Materials will be provided.

In 2002, Percent for Art commissioned artist Monica Banks to create Louisa, a horse located outside the basketball court, and Rusty, a dog located in the lobby near the front desk at the recreation center. Both sculptures were forged from continuous steel rods and resemble three-dimensional line drawings. The artist explains that by installing these "functionless" sculptures at a recreation center, she hopes to inspire children's interest in creating and admiring works of art.
