Join MillionTreesNYC and NYC Parks Crews in Caring for Trees This Month!

This winter Parks Crews are structurally pruning young trees by removing broken and crossed branches. We welcome volunteers to work alongside these crews to care for street tree beds once the trees have been pruned. Join us in removing litter and spreading mulch, and you will have the chance to watch the experts in action and witness the pruning process.

Help water and care for the 60,000 new street trees that have been planted across New York City! Join the MillionTreesNYC Stewardship Corps and help keep New York City green by coming to a free MillionTreesNYC stewardship workshop where you will learn:

  • What is MillionTreesNYC?
  • How to identify trees in New York City
  • Benefits trees bring to our city
  • Tree Care - Water! Weed! Mulch!

All participants will care for trees using small gardening tools and watering buckets. Please dress for light gardening work, wear close-toed shoes, and bring a refillable water bottle.

Pledge to take care of a specific street tree and get a free watering kit and volunteer card.

Poe Park Visitor Center is pleased to host Swamp, an exhibition that explores our shifting relationship with the natural world. The swamp as a bipolar space—half earth, half water—hints at complex connections between the real and fantastic, renewal and abandonment. Fourteen artists explore the delicate balance between visual imagination, illusion and actual environment. Swamp, curated by Kari Adelaide, is on view from December 19, 2012 - January 18, 2013.

In addition to drawing upon environmental sources, the artists also include ideas of embodiment and themes of fluidity, memory and consciousness. The exhibition conjures New York City’s bygone swamps, such as the Bronx’s former Bear Swamp, as well as Central Park’s present-day bodies of water that were created by damming the natural seepage of a swamp. Swamp acknowledges Frederick Law Olmsted's vision of "undignified tricks of disguise" in his Greensward Plan (the original map for Central Park), which emphasized the illusion of extended space—seemingly natural but completely man-made. Olmsted's vision of land rearrangement led to significant changes in the park’s structure and natural conditions: swamps were drained, ten million carts of soil were brought in and 20,800 barrels of gunpowder were used to loosen rock, for example.

The strikingly diverse and visually rich range of artwork negotiates boundaries between physical landscape and human consciousness. In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Shadows in still water, and the like, if too eagerly hunted, become shows merely, and mock us with their unreality.”

Artists exhibited include Bhakti Baxter, Jesse Bransford, Benjamin Butler, Marthe Ramm Fortun, Tamara Gonzales, Scott Hug, Juliet Jacobson, Jose Lerma, Lauren Luloff, David Matorin, Max Razdow, Sigga Björg Sigurðardóttir, Ryan Wallace, Max Warsh.

Craniosacral therapy and relaxation is a deeply relaxing technique, somewhat like yoga, that makes you feel as though you are floating on water.

You may experience yourself drifting in and out of sleep during the gentle and quiet sessions. You will gain a deeper sense of well-being and relaxation, with a better understanding of your body and how it feels. If you suffer migraines, back or neck pain, the instructor will advice you on the specific technique to alleviate the area of concern.

Mats and materials are provided. Come in loose and comfortable pants and clothing. Most people remove their shoes.

Get ready to have an amazing experience. This is a very popular class.

Wave Hill Horticultural Lectures are devoted to landscape design and the meaning of our interactions with plants and the natural world. This year’s distinguished lecturers offer a walk down memory lane. But these presentations are not simply an indulgence in nostalgia, because the past strongly informs the present in the three subjects we address. Before Samuel Untermyer’s death in 1940, his gardens in Yonkers, New York, were among America’s most celebrated. Spearheading the rebirth of this estate are Untermyer Gardens Conservancy chair and former Wave Hill board member Stephen F. Byrns and former Wave Hill Gardener Timothy Tilghman, Untermyer’s horticulturist. (Marco Polo Stufano, Wave Hill’s founding Director of Horticulture, is adviser to the project.) Byrns, an award-winning partner at BKSK Architects, has published widely. He joins Tilghman, an acclaimed horticulturist whose experience ranges from Missouri to the Hudson Valley, in painting a bright picture of the recovery of this magnificent estate. The second in this series takes place February 27.

Reservations recommended, online at www.wavehill.org or by calling 718.549.3200 x216.

Musical Ecologies is a new monthly symposium on music and sound held at the Old Stone House in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Curated and hosted by composer Dan Joseph, each event focuses on a single artist who presents a work or project either in the form of a talk or lecture, a multimedia presentation, a performance, or combination thereof. Each presentation is preceded by a 30-minute conversation with the curator and audience. Admission is by contribution and a reception will follow.

Eve Beglarian “is a humane, idealistic rebel and a musical sensualist.” “One of new music’s truly free spirits,” and a “remarkable experimentalist,” she is a composer, performer, and audio producer whose music is “an eclectic and wide-open series of enticements.”

Much of her recent music has been inspired by a four and a half month journey she took down the Mississippi River by kayak and bicycle in 2009, which is documented on her RiverBlog.

Come to Fort Tryon Park and try something new. Join us on Saturdays, Tuesday and Thursday mornings for one hour of walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Rain and weather / air advisory cancels. Fitness programs are cancelled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. After years of being a gym rat, I've seen the light, so to speak. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.
